Ilford Multigrade Art 300 Overview

The Ilford Multigrade Art 300 Paper is a traditional silver gelatin black and white printing paper featuring a textured matte surface with an eggshell sheen. It has a cool paper base with a warm image tone and differs from Ilford FB baryta-based papers by exhibiting shorter final wash times and easier handling due to its 300gsm weight.

This item contains 30 sheets of 11 x 14" / 27.9 x 35.6cm paper.

Produced for Harman technology by Hahnemule FineArt GmbH.
Fully compatible with all existing Multigrade filters and equipment. It is suitable for printing from conventional black and white negatives and XP2 Super negatives.

Art 300 is perhaps the finest paper I have ever used. Of course, some images are best printed on gloss finish. But for those that look better with some paper texture, this is THE paper to use. It does require about 2 times the light as Ilford FB papers require, but that is a non-issue (other than the cost of running test strips). The Art 300 also takes color retouching (Marshall Oils) beautifully. Love the heavy-weight of this paper as well. Deep blacks and lovely tonal range. This nothing not to like here.

If processed ta archival standards, is this paper as archival as Ilford's traditional baryta fiber based papers?

Yes, this paper is archival quality, as are all of Ilford's FB papers. However, this paper does require extra washing time to ensure that all fixer/hypo/toner is extracted.

Will awesome prints made with Ilford Art 300 paper still look awesome under frame glass?

The quality of the paper is not affected by the glass but if you use common glass there will be reflective images interfering with you ability to view the porint.Use of non reflective glass is a must if you want high quality viewing under all light conditions

Suggest you develop an unexposed piece of the paper and see if it fogs at all. If not, it should be good to go. I have used 10 year old Ilford FB paper with good success. How it was stored matters, of course.

Does the paper selenium tone evenly with a cool paper and warm emulsion?

I just selenium toned a print of Art 300. About 3.5 minutes in 1:3 Ilford toner. It toned beautifully, and warmed the colors nicely, very even in all the tonal ranges. I will add that I have never looked at this paper and thought it was cool toned in any way. To my eye, this is a warm paper, even without toning. My 2¢

Carlos, Xray does affect B&W photo paper. It does depend on the dose used though. A few years ago, Ilford found out about high-power X-rays via a Walkman printed on half a box of paper in a shipment! In the words of a spokesman, We were impressed. Also, all shippers reserve the right to Xray packages in and out of the US. They might do it routinely but the possibility exists. One option would be to mark the package with Photographic Material - please do not Xray and also discuss it with the shipper beforehand. I hope this helps.

Correct. It is a heavier than normal fiber paper that tends to move to the warmer side, responds well to different developing agents, tones well and dries relatively flat.Try a few sheets. You may like it. Great for portraits.

I exposed this paper under the enlarger, and then put it to the tray of developer but it comes nothing, why? Should I take a different process?

Are you sure the emulsion side was facing up? Also, we the developer fresh? Assume there was no red filter in place on the enlarger as well.
