BOSS BR-80 Reviews

Mac Users Beware

Recordings made using the built-in stereo mikes sound surprisingly good, no complaint there. I personally had difficulty moving recordings made in Live mode to MTR mode, maybe that's just me. Controls are quite complicated and so is the manual; I found that a few of the instructions in the manual aren't correct, or perhaps just aren't clear. There are play-along songs that you can record along with and my efforts actually sounded pretty good, but annoyingly the songs are only a few seconds long so you have to loop them to play along with them, and there is no way to fade the loop out or stop it other than the stop button. But the big problem is that the unit is only marginally compatible with Mac computers. I had trouble transferring songs from the BR-80 to the computer and ended up just removing the SD card from the BR-80 and inserting it into the Mac, rather than trying to do it via USB. When I try to transfer songs from the Mac to the BR-80 using USB maybe 1 out of 5 will actually transfer. I bought mine a couple years ago (it did not come with any software), perhaps they've been debugged since then?

Having a lot of fun with the BR-80

Long time guitarist but I'm new to 8-track recording so no experience with other recorders. I've used the BR-80 in all 3 modes and found them all to work well. It's amazing how much power is packed into this little thing. Being able to record tracks, control track volume, panning left or right, are all pretty easy to figure out how to do on this. The end sound quality comes out really nice. Inserting drum patterns is taking me more time to get fluent in. The eband mode is really easy and fun to operate. Playing solos to backing tracks with excellent guitar effects to choose from is a blast. I figured out how to import songs into the unit too. This took a little patience to figure out how to do but once I figured it out I can add import a new backing track in minutes. Live record is very easy to use and being able to take the recording and import it into the other modes is a nice feature. The wheel that you use to navigate with is not the best as my hand tends to fall off it. I like the rubber wheel on my little mp3 player much better. It takes a little time and patience to figure out how to operate all the features but I've found it to be worth my time. One downer is that the software that came with it is not compatable with my Mac so I can't use that. Bottom line is this thing is a lot of fun and a very useful tool.

question

Is one allowed to connect Boss BR-80 to a guitar amplifier, and how to do it? Via line out? Is it the way to monitor the recordings etc. (besides having the earphones)? Or is it better to connect it to a home hi fi stereo set and how?
Asked by: Anonymous
Connect the Boss MICRO BR BR-80 to the amp via its line input and monitor via the BR-80's Headphone out with headphones or connect powered speakers or a home AV receiver to its LINE output.
