Canon 1946B011AA overview

  • 1Description

As the Canon top-of-the-line flash for the EOS-system, the Speedlite 580EX II takes the best features from existing models and adds functionality that enhances digital photography. A more powerful flash with a maximum guide number of 190' (58 m) at ISO 100 (at 105mm focal length), faster recycling, more consistent color and enhanced controls are among the improvements that all photographers, especially those who shoot digital, will find useful.

The 580EX version II offers several improvements over the original 580EX version. It has been redesigned to match with the EOS-1D Mark III in terms of improved dust- and water-resistance, body strength, and the ability to control flash functions and settings from the camera menu (EOS-1D Mark III only). Other features include improved communication reliability through its direct contacts, a metal hot shoe, and recycling time is both 20% shorter than the 580EX and is completely inaudible.

The flash supports all current versions of TTL, including evaluative E-TTL II. This is great for photographers that shoot high contrast or reflective subjects, like those encountered in wedding photography. Photographers can now capture every detail from the black of tuxedos to the white of wide smiles and wedding dresses.

Compatibility
The Speedlite 580EX flash is compatible with Canon's E-TTL II (Evaluative Through The Lens) auto exposure technology. When combined with a compatible Canon camera (EOS-1D/s Mark II, Mark III, D-20, Elan 7N/E, or newer models) and compatible lens, E-TTL II utilizes subject distance and other information that automatically modifies flash power, resulting in accurate flash exposure regardless of subject size, reflectance, or photographic composition.
Multiple Flash Exposure Modes
E-TTL II, E-TTL, TTL & Manual
Faster Recycling Time
Improved power supply design provides up to 25% improvement in flash recycle time
Built-in AF-assist beam compatible with EOS multi-point AF systems including 45-point Area AF types
Built-in catchlight reflector allows a catchlight to be added quickly and conveniently to portraits

Professional Modes

FE Lock - Flash exposure lock
FP Mode, or high-speed sync, allows the camera to sync with flash at higher shutter speeds
Second-curtain sync fires the flash at the end of the exposure, allowing streak of light to flow naturally behind the movement of the subject

Stroboscopic mode shows several minute flashes continuously to easily view flash effect
FEB - Flash Exposure Bracketing
14 Custom Functions that provide maximum control over various flash functions
Ratio flash lighting of up to 8:1 when used with ST-E2 Transmitter & multiple 550 or 580EX's

    Canon 1946B011AA reviews

Speedlite 580EX II is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 2182.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed The primary reason for purchasing the flash was for wedding photography ... to set the studio strobes off while taking the formals and for lighting important shots at indoor, dark receptions. I always had fits with the original 580EX and thought the 580EX II would surely be better. No difference. Inconsistent firing. Overheats easily and won't fire at all. I've tried battery packs, disposable batteries and regular batteries. Tried manual and TTL. Major disappointment for wedding use. I will keep it for fill flash at portrait sessions where the recycle time is not so critical, but am searching for other solutions for weddings.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from 580EX II Attributes Use: mostly wedding, some outdoors & sports Pros: Really durable now with the steel shoe and weather sealing. I depended on it in China, landed on it once, and it still worked great. Consistent output, better than the 580EX Cons: Missing the external switch to rapidly go from slave/master to off for critical wedding shots. I use my 580EX for this and use the new 580EX II as a slave -- not what I had hoped for. PC socket appears to be useless with the normal gear we have. Recommendation: If you shoot outdoors and may subject this flash to rough treatment it is the best one I have found. If you need it for multi flash setups be ready to use it as a slave. So, depending on use, I would / would not recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great flash This replaced my Canon 270ex flash which could only rotate up to bounce off the ceiling. The 580ex ii is awesome because it's head rotates in all directions. I also really love using it with my Canon 7D off-camera. I don't even need a transmitter or radio trigger to make it go off. All I do is set my flash up where I want it and go into my settings on my camera and adjust its power from there. Pretty sure though it only does E-TTL off-camera with just the 7D pop up flash as the transmitter. I just bought another 580ex ii to add to my lighting setup. This is a very strong flash! It also comes with a nice case and a mini cold shoe stand tucked inside it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from pretty pleased... I use this flash as a component of a multi-flash lighting system to take wide action shots e.g. on dance floor of a large reception hall. I do not use the TLL, just manual setting. The Good - The flash is accurate and spot on when metered well, both as master or secondary flash. I use an external power source as the A4 batteries drain quickly. It works well for continuous shooting. The Not-so-good:- I feel that the flash is pricey. There are other flash units that offer the same features at a much lower price point. Also, as afore-mentioned the batteries drain quickly, and you need to factor in the cost of external power source.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Uncovering the Excellence of 580 EX II This is my first off-camera flash after few years of trying to make the most of a very limited capability built-in flash. I'm loving it so far and getting excellent results. One thing I've noticed though that the flash coverage is not as wide as the the coverage of a wide angle shot so then I get a slightly vignetting image (darker on the periphery) when shooting at 17mm with wide apperture (f2.8) on a reduced lighted room. I guess I will need a second flash in this situation. Also, the product description does not include what's in the box so I purchased a separate flash case to find out later a flash case comes with it. Everything else so far is excellent!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Speedlite for dummies . . . . . . nothing has improved my images more then this briliant piece of Canon Hardware. I invested in much fast L glass to avoid diving into flash, as the skill and knowlege in using flash was a little daunting to me. As it turns out, I'm an idiot as the 580EX and my 7D comunicate very well with each other, and in ETTL mode, they don't evan care for my imput. Right out of the box this incredible unit has turned my natural/availible light photos into fill flash masterpieces. In time I will learn how to fully utilize the incredible variables I have at my disposal but right out of the box, my world (and images) has changed. Awesome piece!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice upgrade but... I have previously owned the 550EX and found the differences quite distinct. With the 550 being a lot more user friendly and easier to operate. I liked: the quick release catch. Better battery compartment door. Intelligent zoom function. Weather sealing The one thing I don't like about this upgrade is that they did away with the dedicated switch between using this flash as a master/slave etc. I find holding in buttons can waste quite a lot of time when switching to using wireless flash. I have had some inconsistent reults when using it on a 5D, very blown images. Overall works great, but I still think it is overpriced.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great speedlight I'm using this speedlight on Canon EOS 40D. It is the first time I use a speedlight of this level, and I found it to be easy to use with great results. It certainly have a lot of features, and I doubt if will ever use all. I find that the light output is good and can be adjusted for many different conditions. On the downside, it is a big and heavy piece of equipment. I have an interest in travel photography and people and to walk around with the flash on the camera in the streets at night , I must admit gets tiring after a while. Together with this flash I bought a bounce dome - which really softens the light, and an extention cable which so far I did not use.
