IOGEAR GCS1642 overview

  • 1Description

The IOGEAR 2-Port DualView Dual-Link DVI KVMP Switch with Audio comes with four DVI-I outputs, two DVI-I inputs, and a pair of USB ports, so you can control 2 computers using two monitors and a single keyboard and mouse. For multimedia applications, the switch delivers 2-channel sounds by featuring standard audio jacks for your speakers, headsets, and microphones. In addition, a 2-port USB hub allows you to connect printers, external storage drives, scanners, and more to your two systems.

The six dual-link DVI-I ports offer a resolution of up to 2500 x 1600, which is suitable for 3D graphics and gaming. You can quickly switch between the two systems with asynchronous hotkey software switching or the three buttons located on the front panel. The switch supports Dynasync so that Windows 7 can read and remember the monitor's video resolution when switching between or booting computers. IOGEAR has designed this switch to work with various operating systems, including Windows, Mac OS X, Sun Solaris, and Linux. Being HDCP compliant, the switch is firmware upgradeable. Furthermore, two sets of KVM cables and two DVI-D cables are included to complete your switching needs.

    IOGEAR GCS1642 reviews

2-Port DualView Dual-Link DVI KVMP Switch with Audio is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty good... but not perfect I use the kvmp switch to drive two Dell U2711 displays, a keyboard, a 2Gb drive and headphones. It all seems to work pretty well. Switching is easy, basically a single button push. The pc's (running Vista/64 and Win 7/64 respectively) don't seem to have any issues at all. This is good... But... Problem 1 - the DCS1642 does not support resolution that is higher than 1680x1050 (even though the Iogear web site says 2560x1600.) I did experiment with this and don't have a good explanation. Problem 2 - one of the DVI cables that was supplied with the unit was faulty. I had a spare, so it hardly mattered.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than the rest Reached my frustration level with my Linkskey KVM. Never remembered I had two monitors connected unless a precise power up sequence was followed and even then, it sometimes took two tries. Cables were supplied with this IOgear switch, but I just moved the ones over from the Linkskey and never looked back. Works flawlessly. Stores the technical data from your monitor, so it remembers how to display multiple monitors from multiple computers. If you have other than standard keyboard/mouse, you may have to go into setup to configure. The switch also lets you just switch the monitor/keyboard/mouse and leave the speakers and USB devices where they were useful if running a USB backup or listening to music and just want to KVM to another computer. This appears to be a rebranded ATEN product. More amazing was B&H price. Significantly lower than anyone else. Was a non-stock item, so it took longer to arrive, but did not matter to me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth every penny! I purchased this KVM switch to switch between my two mac pros. Originally I was switching between the computers by hand every time I wanted to switch between my video/audio rigs. Removing desktops became too much to deal with and affected my productivity. Now I can run both mac pros (2 monitors-two computers-one mouse and keyboard) simultaneously! No more heavy lifting and rewiring every time I want to use an alternate computer. Why didn't I get this sooner! Easy and quick setup and all the wires needed were included. Worth every penny.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from only game in town It's a pretty specific and exotic piece of hardware so they can charge a premium. Fortunately it's built like a tank and very reliable. I use it to switch between a hackintosh and a linux box between dual 27 2560x1440 monitors. There's some very specific issues with power saving on one of the monitors, doesn't seem to send the correct power off signal through the switch which causes the 2nd monitor to power cycle every minute or so. I previously had the 4 port model for work, and invested in the 2 port model for my home setup.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth every penny!!! I was seeking a KVM switch to replace my old one that only supported a single monitor. It took me a while to settle on this one, but I am surely glad I did. The setup of this product is VERY simple because everything comes in one box. I didn't have to worry about getting the right cables in a separate transaction and hoping everything would come in at the same time. I have found the product to do everything the description said it would. I couldn't be happier with the purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Decent switch Very few options for dual DVI switching. THis KVM does a nice job. THe ability to independently switch KVM and audio is a plus

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great. Get what you pay for! Good tools keep you focused on the job without getting in the way or causing distraction. So far the IOGear KVMP achieves this! Pros: - Switch seamlessly between Windows7 and OpenSolaris. - Hotkeys work out-of-box on both systems. - Zero USB-boot-time problems. - Have not had to fight with it once. Cons: - KVMs take Get what you pay for to an extream. - The pricetag hurts, but I wish I had bought this sooner. Previous <$100 KVMs prevented these SUN Workstations from booting, requiring unplugging/replugging and magic incantations. USB controller errors were prevelant, hotkey switching *never* worked in Solaris, USB devices wouldn't be recognized in Windows. Other common glitches I did not associate with the KVMs have seemingly been resolved. Worth every dollar, hopefully it will be here for the long-haul.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product We have two of these in our office and they do exactly what we need them to do. They are not difficult to install and switching between computers is very easy. There doesn't seem to be any other product that does the same thing so it's fortunate that IOGears KVMP is an excellent product. B&H prices are even better.
