NewerTech Voyager Q overview

  • 1Description

The Voyager Q Quad Interface Dock for 2.5" and 3.5" Serial ATA Drives from Newer Technology is an extremely convenient way to access data on a SATA internal drive without having to install that drive into your computer. The Voyager Q can hold drives of either the 2.5" or 3.5" form factor that are no greater than 6TB in capacity and that are of any SATA standard, whether that's SATA 1.5 Gbps, SATA 3 Gbps, or SATA 6 Gbps. Within those criteria, this dock supports hard drives and solid state drives.

For connecting the dock to your computer, you have a bounty of interfaces. The dock features a super-fast USB 3.0 port, one eSATA port, two FireWire 800 ports, and one FireWire 400 port. With the USB 3.0 interface, you can transfer data at a blazing maximum rate of 5 Gbps. Plus, that interface is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 or 1.1 connections. With all of these ports, you can connect the dock to your Mac or Windows computer and let the data flow.

Supports all SATA 1.5 Gbps, 3 Gbps, or 6 Gbps drives that have a form factor of either 2.5" or 3.5" and that are no greater than 6.0TB in capacity. That means, you can connect hard disk drives (HDD) or solid state drives (SSD) to the dock
This dock features a "Quad Interface" that allows you to transfer data at super-fast rates. The four interfaces also give you enough flexibility to connect with a variety of computer systems
The dock supports a maximum data transfer rate of up to 5.0 Gbps or 500 MB/s via its fastest interface, USB 3.0
The push button drive eject button allows you to safely remove the drive
The dock includes a hinged flap for 3.5" drive access
Hot-Swap functionality allows you to quickly access multiple SATA drives by switching them in and out
The weighted base and non-skid rubber feet offer stable operation
The dock features a two color status LED. When the left side is blue, it indicates that the dock is powered on; when the right side is flashing red, it indicates "Disk Activity"
The dock features a compact design
The dock is whisper quiet to operate and does not require a cooling fan
The dock is plug-and-play with Mac and Windows computers via the USB or FireWire interfaces. Use of the eSATA interface requires a system reboot in order to recognize drive
All interface connection cables are included
The dock features a limited one-year warranty

    NewerTech Voyager Q reviews

Voyager Q Quad Interface Dock for 2.5" and 3.5" Serial ATA Drives is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 140.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from 8 out of 8 failed Bought 1, then 2 more. Seemed like a good product. First one failed a few months after purchase. Then the other 2 did. After that, I've been returning them to the manufacturer. After owning 8 of them, I can assure you that if you use the Firewire 800 port, connected to a Mac, for any extended period of time, this unit will fail. By fail, I mean that one day it just won't appear on your desktop. If you're unlucky enough to have it become intermittent before it fails completely, you'll probably lose some data. I lost an entire drive. After numerous returns, the manufacturer has issued me a credit statement for 1/3 of my cost. They're deducting a hefty restocking fee and charging for missing cables.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not bad, not bad The most important thing that you observe at first is that this device actually does work. Gone are the days when such an assumption might safely be made. Physically, it's not all that impressive. If the room is not well lit, then forget about seeing the two buttons on top that do the interesting things. They can be located by feel, so that is a minor annoyance. Much odder is what happens when you try to defrag a drive in this dock (Win XP). The defrag program starts and it runs . . . but it won't stop. Even Task Manager is unable to get it to stop, although the defragger eventually tires of being nasty and terminates. Eventually, but certainly not when you want it to.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb, silent..plugs SNAP IN! Love it. I have four of these lined up, and daisy-chained, running constantly in a professional film production facility. Love the fact that the FW800 cables SNAP into place (!!), and that the power plug also sits TIGHTLY in the socket. All four started up perfectly the first time and have done so every time. Our Macs mount the drives instantly via FW800 (there was another review that said they would mount only via USB -- and indeed the instructions actually say to connect them first via USB: We did not do that, have used FW800 ONLY, from the start and 'no problems' encountered.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Too Many Failures I purchased two of these docks. Both failed within the first year. Both were replaced within the warranty period. Both new ones failed within 6 months. No support from NewerTech. They passed me along to OWC who told me that the two were out of warranty and would not be replaced. These should have been under their own warranty that started the day I received them, instead, OWC seemed to think that the replacements' warranties started for the date of my original purchase. Stay away....with so many other options, these docks are not worth the hassle. Also, beware of both OWC and NewerTech.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Device I personally think this is one of the best back-up solutions for a photographer. I have 2 of these docks daisy-chained to my iMac via FW800, and I use Carbon Copy Cloner to continually back-up my RAW images. Being hot-swapable, one can pop out a drive and pop-in another drive, clone it and keep a copy of a hard drive at a friend's in case of a break-in, fire or flood. Also, if one of the drives becomes damaged or full, you just purchase another internal hard drive, and no need to get rid of the enclosure or have to try and open the enclosure of the typical external drives on the market. This is also a much cheaper solution, and you can choose WHICH brand of hard drive, speed and size you want and need. My only complaint (minor) is that this dock look and feel a little cheap, and they could have made them more aesthtically pleasing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I plan on buying another one I am a systems Manager in a small firm. We backup our files to bare drives with docks for off-site storage & rotation. We have almost 4 million files to keep backed up. We had to move to 3&4 TB drives and then realized that if they are formatted on one computer, a different computer (same OS) sees the drive as blank. These docks (I bought 3) solved that problem. Worked perfectly out of the box and they are fast, using eSATA, FireWire 400 & 800 as well as USB3. We use esata & firewire so we can save our USB3 ports for less adaptable devices. I will be getting another one to carry with my Laptop which has an eSATA port.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does what it says on the tin I'm fairly old school at this point, and often find myself giggling that 2TB drives aren't the size of washing machines, as they were when I was a kid. So you can bet I've been through every type of convenient desktop storage and retrieval since syquest. I expect problems. So colour me delighted when this lightweight, portable, no-fuss enclosure just *works*. Eject the disk, pop it out, throw another one in - no restarts, trerats the drive like any other SATA device. Firewire 800 makes it fast, too, and I have two other HDs daisy chained with it. Not a single problem after three weeks, I'd highly recommend.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice, but won't boot my computer Small, simple, powerful backup, and reliable so far (several weeks). But the info at the NewerTech website suggests this will boot your computer. It won't boot my Mac on either FW400 or 800 using SuperDuper clones, which are generally 100% effective. This is true even after I checked that both my root drive and the clones are GUID partitioned. Since a bootable clone is one of the best things to store offsite, it makes this drive dock a good deal less useful. It looks like I'll just use it to backup or archive Aperture vaults, older movies, and other large files.
