Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro Overview

By B&H Photo's

A classic for close-ups, the Canon EF-mount 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro from Sigma is a short-telephoto prime characterized by its ability to achieve a 1:1, life-size magnification along with a 1' minimum focusing distance for macro applications. The optical design employs two SLD elements to virtually eliminate chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the focusing range for improved clarity and color rendering. A Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been applied for greater contrast when working in strong lighting conditions.

Balancing the optical assets, this lens also features a floating internal focus design that maintains consistent sharpness throughout the focusing range. A Hyper Sonic Motor affords quick and quiet autofocus performance while an Optical Stabilizer minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting.

Telephoto prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however it is also suitable for APS-C models where it will provide a 168mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in available light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
Ideal for macro shooting, this lens offers a life-size 1:1 maximum magnification along with a minimum focusing distance of 1' to suit working with close-up subjects.
Two Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements help to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and color fidelity.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM), along with an internal focusing design, realizes quick and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Floating elements system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range.
Optical Stabilizer system minimizes the appearance of camera shake to benefit making sharper imagery when shooting handheld.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
Compatible with optional APO 1.4x EX DG and APO 2x EX DG teleconverters.

Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro Reviews

Worth it, but.....

I am new to macro. Started macro photography during covid, and fell in love. I am mainly a portrait photographer. The motor is a little slower than I would like, but the price point was good! I have no idea what kind moth this is (pretty sure it's a month) but it was a cool image none the less, and the quality of images is very good.

Subpar performance during shoot

first time using this lens for a sweet 16 shoot. Horrible performance - lens got stuck multiple times while trying to shoot - Glad that I didn't use it as my primary lens. Using 5D MarkIII body this lens got stuck and refused to work. Had to remove battery to reset. Stuck with this new lens. Even the focus was misbehaving - pls note was using canon flash 600 EX II along with a continuous backup light to ensure every one was properly lighted. Shooting Aperture 2.8, ISO 500, 1/160 shutter speed with ETTL - I always use negative flash compensation to under expose. Anyone else face similar issues with this lens.

I bought this lens around 2019. The image quality is good, but it's too loud. And sometimes it softens the images. Everything was fine. Recently I saw a ring appears in most of the pictures. And the corners have black marks. I don't know what causes it. But overall, I love this lens.

Works well with my D850. Clear and sharp. I can't wait for spring to try some focus stacking with this combination.

I didn't want to spend a firtune for a macro lense, but didn't want to cheap out on one either. After doing detailed research, I settled fir this Sigma macro. Made a great choice. I can focus1 to 1 1/2 In from the subject and details come out amazing. See image for refrence. Very very pleased with my purchase and highly recommended.

Always wanted a macro

I am enjoying the Macro so far. It allows me to get close to flowers and insects to photograph the details. For some pictures you do not have to be actually close to the subject because of the reach of 105 mm. The lens so far appears quite sharp on my D850. There is a narrow focus area in some pictures, so be mindful of that. You can alleviate some of this by using a smaller f stop. I have been using the lens in manual focus mode so far to give me more control. So far so good.

Will this lens work with an Olympus E-620 camera?
Asked by: David
The Olympus E-620 uses a Four Thirds SLR mount. The Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro Lens for Canon EF will not work on that mount. There aren't many lenses available for the Four Thirds Mount. You can find everything we have at this link here. https://bhpho.to/3poo02T
