Sigma 105mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

The Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM Macro Lens for Canon EOS Cameras delivers superb, distortion-free images throughout its broad focus range, from infinity telephoto to life-size (1:1) macro, as close as 12.2" (31 cm) without accessories. A Special Low Dispersion (SLD) lens and one high refractive index SLD lens provide excellent correction for all types of aberration and distortion. Its non-rotating front lens group makes it easier to work with polarizing filters. A focus limiter helps divide the broad focus range into more manageable chunks.

The "focus-free" mechanical design allows the lens to autofocus without any interference from the manual focus ring, making it easy to hold the lens without affecting the speed or normal operation of the autofocus function. Rugged mechanical construction also makes it durable enough for even the heaviest use required by professional photographers. An ideal lens for a wide variety of applications from nature photography to portraiture.

The improved DG lens design for this lens corrects for various aberrations. This macro lens is specially coated to get the best color balance while cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. The lens provides the utmost correction against lateral chromatic aberration which is a serious problem for digital SLR cameras. Sigma's own proprietary OS (Optical Stabilizer) system enables handheld close-up photography.

Close focus capability of 12.2" (31 cm)
Super Multi Layer (SML) coating reduces ghosting caused by reflections from the surface of digital image sensors
Dual Focus (DF) makes the lens easier to hand hold during AF
The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures quiet and high speed autofocus as well as full-time manual focus capability.

    Sigma 105mm f/2.8 reviews

105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro Lens for Canon EOS Cameras is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 66.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful images This is a fantastic macro lens, and it produces gorgeous images. The IS is loud (the manual describes it as chattering,) so I tend to not use that a whole lot, but other than that, it's a great lens. FYI - for those of you shooting with this lens on a 5d Mark III, if you have peripheral illumination enabled, you will see a funky white ring or other strange things in the corners of your pics. If shooting RAW, this shouldn't be a problem as your processing software won't show the jpeg preview upon editing, but if you're a jpeg user, turn off the illumination and the issue will be eliminated. It freaked me out at first when I saw this happen, and I nearly returned the lens. So, just keep that in mind.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice lens Bought this lens in a canon mount to use specifically for maco. Autofocus works great and picture clarity and sharpness is very good. When stopping down much more than F7.1, available light becomes a problem, as it would with any other F2.8 lens. Some sort of camera stabilization would be needed such as a tripod or a good lighting system. The cost of this lens, compared to a canon F2.8L macro, was also a contributing factor to buying this lens. A good bang for your buck with this Sigma. Some folks find this lens heavy. For some it may be. I find it very stable to handhold. I like that feeling in a lens. A nice product. It now joins several other Sigma lenses in my kit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One Very Nice Lens Just getting into macro photography and really needed to get a macro lens. Was looking at the Canon 100mm f2.8L which is Very Good but pricy. A friend advised I check the Sigma 105mm macro and when I did I found it basically has the same features as the Canon at a much more affordable price. The auto focus is not quite as speedy as the Canon but still very good and when shooting macro you mainly use manual focus anyway. Image quality is Super, and comes with a very good quality case. I am very happy with the Sigma 105mm macro lens, my first outside the Canon family. I will consider other Sigma products going forward.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fits my needs for a rock solid and accurate Macro Lens. Like many other users have is built like a tank. It is also largish for a 105mm lens. However it does exactly what you would want it to. It takes very sharp macro pictures at 1:1. First night I spent the dying hours of sunlight taking pictures of stuff around the back yard (mostly handheld). I found the focus to be relatively fast for most subjects and the OS definitely helped when the shutter speeds got slow. Focus noise is there but not loud (note that I was outdoors at the time). I never even noticed the OS noise when operating. I actually like the balance due to the weight of the lens. I shoot a 7DII with a grip so a somewhat beefy lens makes it balance better.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from tripod required Purchased this lens recently and haven't used it a lot but it does produce excellent images. It is a difficult lens to learn to use, what with the split focus and I'm still working on that. However, as I said, the images are superior. In my case the Optical Stabilizer is of little use, I found that I must use my tripod. The lens is heavy, so you need a VERY GOOD tripod. Bottom line: if you are looking for super images, use this lens properly and you will be rewarded.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Suesby - Photographer wannabe Right out of the box this lens was awesome. 3rd picture captured was a bumble bee on a flower - amazing detail. As with any new lens takes a bit of practice to get used to. It's a lot of fun seeing the small world up close. Also used for portraits of my animals and these show super sharp details. If you want to see the world from a tiny, but sharp perspective then this is a great lens to invest in. Bought for my Canon mount. I have one other Sigma lens and was happy with this also. While the L lenses are great they can be less affordable then Sigma. With the savings I made on this lens I was able to purchase another lens on my wish list! Cause, yep, it's all about the gear! Oh yeah, don't forget the tripod!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Macro Lens! Its a little heavy, just it produces. The OS is great, and it can focus on an item within two inches of the end of the lens. Its taken some great photos on my Canon 5D Mark III!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful macro lens Before buying this lens, I was reversing my lenses and using close-up filters. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the APS-C hood adapter is threaded on the front. There's a large enough space between the front glass and filter thread that I can step down from 62 to a 58 filter without vignetting on a crop sensor. This lens performs exceptionally well at close-focus even when shooting hand-held. The optical stabilization is much better than I originally expected. without OS, I can typically shoot as slow as 1/25, and with OS on, I can shoot 1/8. As of yet, I have no complaints about this lens.
