Redrock Micro microFollowFocus overview

  • 1Description

The Redrock microFollowFocus Black with a 0.8 film pitch drive gear allows you to pull focus of still and cinema lenses. The follow focus includes a backlash dial that enhances the precision of focusing. The integrated hard stops with easy begin/end setups enable fast repeatable racking between 2 focus points, thus achieving perfect focus on lenses without hard stops. A moveable focus indicator allows you to pull focus from any place on the camera while maintaining view of focus indicator and focus wheel. The focus indicator has been redesigned for enhanced durability.

The 3D marking disk allows you to view your focus marks from many angles. You can use the marking disc in low-light conditions using an optional flare, which offers a glow and illuminates the marking disc. The quick release clamp can be easily attached or detached from the set up without disturbing the other rail mounted gears. Custom-designed gears and gearbox offer slack-free performance for foolproof focus pulling. A flippable gearbox adjusts the drive gear front and rear and is compatible with lenses of any size.

An industry-standard, all-metal machined accessory port enables you to add focus whip or speed crank to the focusing system. A Kung Fu rubberized handgrip prevents hand-slips and ensures stable shooting.  Made in America, the microFollowFocus Black has an all-aluminum construction

    Redrock Micro microFollowFocus reviews

microFollowFocus Black is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best Follow focus ever!!!!!!! Hello all! I spend my time as a DP and as a focus puller as well. Many of our productions utilized an Arri FF4 and the MFF1 .The Microfollowfocus | Blue is very similar to the Arri FF4. The Blue has a super high quality build all the metal parts are CNC milled. Our Arri FF4 is built strong but the body is casted from iron. Our Arri FF4 is double sided like the Blue. We use both our Arri FF in studio so the weight is not an issue. The Blue with both focus nobs on both sides weighs much less, but still has the feel of quality! if you wanted to, you could easily use the Blue on a hand held rig no problem. The Blue out of the box is buttery smooth, as of coarse the Arri. The Arri has a few more micro adjusting features than the Blue. With all the bells and whistles the Arri FF4 double sided is close to 4 times as much and without a drive gear! The difference in resale value with the Blue could be an issue down the road?Though I think Redrock micro will hold their value. With all the competition these days in the video market, our decision to go towards the Blue has allowed our production crew to keep the quality and afford to buy a few more needed tools. The only cons i have is: when you disengage the hard stop arms you have to set them to bump/stop against the opposite side they disengage from. This could just be a new learning curve thing? Also the dials to disengage the hard stops Feel as if a good hit could snap/bend them off!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not entirely well thought out design I had one of these and unloaded it as soon as I realized a few design flaws: The threaded rods the knobs tighten on for the hard stops are very thin and bend easily. This means you have to baby the unit in transport. I was afraid they'd snap when I had to bend them back into place slightly. With DSLR rigs the hard stops can become unusable since they swing fore and aft and can bump into accessories or camera mounted on iris rods.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive. The moment when you know you like a company's products... that's what happened when I open the boc for thos follow focus. Well made, solid, trutsworthy, and professional. Much better than the cheaper focus from Redrock. A little pricey, but you get what you pay for.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Amazing First off this is a great piece of gear, and for the price it is truly amazing. However it does not play well with others. I have a tendency to marry different brands of equipment with one another, whether it be a price issue or the standards of certain equipment. In this instance, I chose not to go with Red Rock Micro for their matte box, in my opinion it is a shawdy, flimsy, cheaply built piece of gear that is not worth what their asking for it. So for a little more, I went with Cinevate's Titan Swing Away MB, and this is truly a great piece of gear. Unfortunately I ran into problems with tryings to use the RRM FF and my Cinevate MB. Because of the RRM FF's robust and linear design, the FF knob would hit the rails of the cage on my MB, making it impossible to use or adjust (even after flipping the gear box). Secondly, I under sling my FF because I use a battery grip, so keep in mind one will need a riser if using this on taller cameras. Aside from that, it is a beautiful, wonderfully built FF, but I have to return it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid construction, good results This is my first follow focus system, so it is difficult to weigh my opinion. The system does perform well for my needs, but my experience is limited. It is smooth and precise. I will say that the hard stops are a very useful feature, and work very well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great, Good and Precise Handy, smooth and precise, does not take much width on the rig, quikly installed, so professionnaly designed, the idea of making it reversible easily is brilliant. A very good investment at a very good value for a still afordable price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Supper smooth with locking focus points The Micro Follow Focus feels supper smooth while focusing and the ability to change the position of the focus stoppers is a really handy option if the camera is up high.
