  • 1Description

12TB Pegasus R6 RAID Storage with Thunderbolt (6x 2TB) from Promise Technology is a direct attached storage unit (DAS) with the data safety, huge storage space, and blazing fast data recall demanded by media professionals. Great if you work with video, graphics, or audio, this unit features two Thunderbolt ports and includes six 2TB SATA hard drives preinstalled, each of which spins at the fast disk speed of 7200rpm.* This unit can also save your data in a RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, or 10 configuration.

With the Thunderbolt interface, you can transfer data at a rate of up to 10Gbps, and with this enclosure, you can hit sustained data transfer speeds of over 800MB/s. That's megabytes, not bits! This unit can connect to Mac computers that have a Thunderbolt port, such as a MacBook Pro or iMac. Plus, you can daisy-chain up to six enclosures. For the office or at home, if you want safe and vast data storage with super-swift recall speeds, the soaring, reliable solution just might be this Pegasus.

Note: *Total data capacity will be less because of HFS+ formatting.

Lightning Fast Performance
Pegasus allows amateur professionals, audio engineers, photographers, and post production engineers to unleash the raw power of Pegasus and Thunderbolt Technology. Final Cut professionals can ingest, edit, and playback, multiple streams of uncompressed HD (8-bit and 10-bit) video, while protecting valuable workflows, audio sessions, and other creative media content, with PROMISE's award winning, enterprise level, RAID6 engine (features mature error handling schemes for the ultimate in data protection). Graphic artists utilizing Photoshop and Maya 3D animation can both manipulate and archive high resolution graphics on Pegasus, with relative ease and lightning fast responsiveness.
Flexible Connectivity
The multi-protocol support of Thunderbolt Technology enables Pegasus to deliver amazing flexibility. Daisy-chain more than one Pegasus enclosures to a single Thunderbolt technology port or connect a display to Pegasus for the ultimate in convenience and interface connectivity.
Fast, Safe, and Reliable
Digital Media consumption is growing at an astonishing rate, and is part of everyone's life. Featuring, two, high performance, 10Gb/s bi-directional channels, and PROMISE enterprise-level RAID 6 protection, Pegasus provides fast, safe, and reliable external storage, essential for protecting your music, photos, videos, and other valuable data. Pegasus provides massive storage, and fast performance for popular applications, including Final Cut Pro, Garageband, iTunes, iPhoto, and Photoshop. Pegasus can be used, in conjunction with Apple's Time Machine utility (in Mac OS X), to store backups of invaluable digital media, documents, or an entire computer (or workstation).
Easy to Use
Pegasus comes pre-configured out of the box. Simply unpack, supply power, and connect the Thunderbolt cable (available for purchase under Accessories) to the Thunderbolt port on your computer, and you will be ready to either ingest/edit production video, or store all your important documents, music, photos, and videos. Management of Pegasus is made possible through an easy to use, all new, made-for-Mac OS X GUI utility.
One More Thing, Eco-Friendly
Pegasus is RoHS compliant; in simple terms Pegasus is eco-friendly, keeping harmful lead out of the environment and our delicate ecosystems. Consuming a mere 78 watts under full load with six hard drives installed, Pegasus uses roughly 26% of the power consumed by the average 300 watt power supply in standard computers. Sporting a new enclosure design, an 80 Plus power supply and a smart cooling fan, system noise is never an issue making Pegasus ideal for desktop, small office environments, or any room in the home.

    Promise Technology R6 reviews

    12TB Pegasus R6 RAID Storage with Thunderbolt (6x 2TB) is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 35.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst Decision Made in 15 Years I used this product for 10 tb worth of media files - video, audio and RAW files. Over the course of 11 months 3 separate drives failed ultimately resulting in the corruption of nearly all the data. Even worse was the runaround from Promise tech support, who when they did answer the phone or call back blamed it on everything but the failure of their system. Repeatedly telling me work with Apple, Disk Warrior, data recovery companies but never acknowledging this is an awful product that failed. Took it to Tekserve and their video people laughed at it, saying the Pegasus is bs, good for short term fast usage but very, very unreliable. I've been working in digital media since the 1990s starting with 9 gb SCSI drives that cost thousands of dollars before FCP even existed. This is the biggest equipment purchase mistake I have ever made.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Total junk. Unbelievable! And I have 7! I have 56tb of RAW files that needed a new storage solution. We invested in 7 of the 12TB pegasus where of we have had problems with 5. One arrived completely broken from the factory. One had a dual drive failure at the same time and we lost everything on the volume. One started smooking from the back and simply burned down. One would eject itself after about 2min of high speed transfer and now we are facing a massive problem with all the drive ejecting randomly if controlled from an Imac (google it). The drives become 10tb when in Raid 5, but when there is only 1tb left the drive become unbearable slow and is performing a on-the-go fragmentation that slows the drive down to less than a USB 2.0. I could not recommend a product less than this. Stay completely away or buy WD drives. We have over 80 WD drives in our company and on 1 has ever broken down. Best option is still the WD 6tb at 30% of the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Faaaaaaaaaast! The R6 offers up the perfect balance of speed and redundancy. Other reviews mentioned a 10-hour setup time, but my R6 was plug-n-play right out of the box. Promise Technology must be reading the reviews and responding. The default configuration is setup as RAID 5, without a spare drive. I changed this config to include one spare, which did require 10 hours to complete. I only wish they gave you the option to power the unit down when the computer is off for X time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 3 out of 6 drives burned out in 6 months avoid at all cost. I've spent so much money to purchase and it has already blown 3 out of 6 drives in a period of 6 months. this is so pathetic. it takes an entire week to replace them, plenty of wasted hours for a product that appears to be defunct by design avoid at all cost do not purchase this. it is a disaster !!!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not up and running just yet Got it, initialized the RAID and when finished, started adding files from my Aperture referenced library. Second day I get warnings that drive 4 has problems. Call customer support and find out that there are bad sectors on that drive, they will send a replacement, which is nice but it's a slow process. It takes another day to get approved, and then they send with Fed-Ex Ground which from CA to NY takes 7 days (supposed to arrive day after tomorrow), unlike say Western Digital who will send UPS overnight to replace a faulty drive. Meanwhile, the tech tells me it's possible to keep using the drive which I do, but the next day drive 4 shows as dead in the Promise Utility and the Pegasus won't mount at all. Maybe it should have been removed from the system when it had bad sectors but if so, the tech didn't tell me. I call support again, and as we go over the system (I send the subsysteminfo report to them) they notice that also drive 1 has bad sectors. The tech suggests that I wait with having it replaced until it fails, but that sounds crazy to me. This is a brand new system and the drives should be fine, and if they're not they should be replaced free of cost. They agree to send another drive, which I suppose will arrive a few more days after the first one. So, it's 10 days after I bought the system, and it's still not up and running...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Indispensable I've been using my R6 for HD video editing for almost six months. I could never go back to using a lesser device. Fast, reliable, high capacity. Before the end of the year I may acquire a second unit. Having immediate access to videos and file footage allows me to get work done for my clients faster. I had a shaky start when two of the six drives failed within the first month of use. But the Promise service reps came through with replacement drives very quickly. The combination of a late-model MacBook Pro and the Pegasus is far more robust that anything I can do with my 2008 8-core MacPro. The R6 is the real deal.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Almost lives up to Promise Huge Photoshop files. Raid 5 gives piece of mind that if a hard drive fails all data is still protected. However, all advertising hype of 10 times speed increase is not accurate. I experienced little speed increase ! Company claims if Raid is striped as Raid 0 then I would get promised speed increase, but then i have to back up all data to another drive. If I could afford it I'd get another drive and stripe it Raid 0 and use this Raid 5 as a back-up drive, supposedly no penalty for daisy chaining. Drive is slightly noisy, but if I turn it off then my daisy chained monitor will not work.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Initial problem, but good support Bought this R6 system to go with a new iMac. Within one week one of the 6 hard drives failed. Called Promise Technologies on the phone and they quickly diagnosed the problem by going through some info I sent them from the software operating system. They are sending a new hard drive to replace the bad one. It has been my experience that if a hard drive is going to fail it often does it in the first few weeks and if not it will probably go years without a problem. As disconcerting as the failure of a new hard drive is, the system worked as promised as I have not lost anything that was loaded on this R6 despite the hard drive failure. When the new hard drive arrives it will be back to full working order. I am disappointed that the quality control was such that the new drive failed immediately, but glad the system worked as advertised and hopefully that will be the last of my problems for a while.
