Vortex Media FS100DVD overview

  • 1Description

This Vortex Media two-DVD set, Mastering the Sony NEX-FS100 Camcorder, is presented by veteran cameraman Doug Jensen, who lays out detailed tutorials, step-by-step procedures, and instructions that cover all the most important aspects of operating this interchangeable-lens Super 35 camcorder.

Over the course of 3 hours of training, Jensen explains how to get the most out of this remarkable camcorder, via chapters such as Choosing a Video Format, Audio Recording, Controlling Exposure, and Lens Options. The aim to help anyone, from veteran camera operators to novices, to understand how to use the NEX-FS100 to capture the type of beautiful, professional-level footage that Jensen has included on these discs.

Without getting bogged down in technical jargon, the workshop teaches through practical examples when, how, and why to use specific techniques to achieve the results you desire. The tapeless NXCAM workflow will become second nature, with best practices (including file management and clip importing) explained clearly and succinctly. You'll become familiar with special camera functions such as slow & quick motion, GPS data, and time-lapse recording. You'll understand how to get the optimal picture out of the FS100, through tutorials that cover focus assist functions, shutter speed, white balance, zebras, Picture Profiles, and more.

Jensen's helpful explanations will help you learn much more in three hours than you otherwise would over full days experimenting on your own with the camera through trial & error.

Vortex Media FS100DVD reviews

DVD: Mastering the Sony NEX-FS100 Camcorder is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from mastering was more of a basic review Good for a basic review, but when it came to mastering the camera and looking futher into the advanced functions ie PP settings, Shutter, AE function, vortex media simply stated that well if we got into it that would take us way more time to go through than we have on this disk which is the point of the dvds. at least of what I thought. The DVD should be called Basic training for the NEXfs100. save your money and just do your free web research on the camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great introduction to the camera When I first purchased our EX-1 I bought Vortex Media's video for that platform, and learned everything I needed to know to feel comfortable with the camera and start shooting. The FS100 videos were just as good. Doug provides an overview of how things work and covers everything I needed to know.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good coverage I just bought Sony FS-100 camcorder to use with my Amphibico Genesis housing to shoot underwater. I have been shooting underwater video since 1995, but only with consumer camcorders. Sony FS-100 is a pro camcorder and in order to use all the manual features to get the best images, I have to completely understand what this camcorder brings. This video was-is very helpfull to me (always consulting), since explains clearly those features in an easy way to understand. Things like gain, knee correction, iris, picture profile, etc, are explained, so I can set them up manually to get the best images. But this takes time and a learning curve. But I think they could sell this material in matroska (.mkv) or .avi files, buying and downloading via internet. I live in Brazil, so, I have to pay international shipping for the DVD. I could buy and download it via internet in a click.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Mastering? Mr. Jensen, rather begrudgingly, covers what buttons are for in the first DVD while mentioning why he uses other set ups. The second DVD shows a beginner some basic functions. That's fine in itself, but this should not be anticipated as a Mastering of the camera. The best thing to do is just go out and shoot.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not for beginners The DVD shows a few different settings and is informative but it doesn't explain some of the basic things for newbies. It also does not go into deep detail on various advance settings for the camera. It teaches just enough to get you started with several topics not addressed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must for New FS100U Owners! I don't know about Mastering, but the tips here will get you shooting great quickly. Info needs to be updated though; Mentions FS100 not being able to save camera settings to disk - Firmware version 2 enables that feature. Still, great video lesson!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Some Great Features with a Few Poor The FS-100 is a great video camera, but it has a few shortfalls also. I love the quality video it produces at 60fps via the super 35 cmos sensor. I have used it for several weeks (about 1000 hours of filming) and can't imagine how I could ask for a higher quality end product. However, I can say that the 18-200mm lens is a little disappointing (when mounted on a tripod the lens will extend via gravity if the camera is pointed down (it does have a lock, but that makes zooming impossible). I wish the camera had a servo button for zoom, but I am getting used to using the ring on the lens for zoom. The camera is very difficult to hold without a tripod. You almost have to hold it out in front of you and at the same time balance the camera and work the zoom ring at the same time (you will get very tired without a tripod or harness support system). It does not have a ND filter button and thus you will need to buy filters for outside shots. The first thing I will do is buy a better lens than the one that was supplied. All in all I would rate this camera as the perfect DSLR killer.
