The Cotton Carrier Steady Shot is an adjustable aluminum bracket that allows you to support the weight of your camera steadily against your chest by inserting the bottom end of the Steady Shot into the Lexan receptacle of your existing Cotton Carrier Camera Vest.

As anyone used the SteadyShot with either a Canon EF 100-400 mm lens or a Canon RF 100-500 mm lens? Are these too heavy for comfortable use?
Customers have used the Cotton Carrier Steady Shot with much larger lenses such as the 200-400mm (about 6 inches longer and 4 pounds heaver than the 2 lenses you mentioned). So it is comfortable to use and it will help stabilizer your photos and videos.

Will this work with the smallish Cotton Scout G2? I assume lateral stability wouldn't be as good as with a larger carrier, but I mainly want something to relieve the weight on my left hand when holding. Other suggestions??

The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR Lens (B&H # NI80056) has not been tested with the Cotton Carrier Steady Shot with Camera Vest. According to the manufacturer, a 600mm lens will place your weight forward and for some, it becomes a bit awkward. While they suggest that the system will not fail, it may not be ideal as it becomes a matter of comfort.

Could I wear this vest with a backpack on top or would it interfere with it?
You could most likely wear a backpack with it without interfering with it. There shouldn't be any reason why it would get in the way of you using the Steady Shot, and if you're using a very heavy lens+camera combo on it, the backpack might help balance you instead of hinder you.

Are the Kipp handles supposed to lock in place & prevent the support arms from being able to move? I can't seem to get them to actually lock; the arms can still be moved to adjust their angle, when I release the Kipp handle after pulling it out .
The arms are supposed to be able to move in order to make adjustments. For stability, it is recommended to use this product with a ball head to support the brunt of the weight, which is not included in the rig package.
