Panasonic Lumix G X Vario PZ 45-175mm f/4-5.6 Reviews

Lens for filming kids' foot games

As a user of Nikon DSLR and mirrorless cameras I find my Panasonic Lumix GX8 and GX9 MFT cameras excellent for recording my kids' sports activities. I purchased the 45-175mm lens for the sports activities when my 12-60mm lens is too short of a focal range. So far I have found the zoom range of this lens to be what I need and the power zoom is smooth and fast enough for following action. I use it in well lighted settings so the aperture range is not a problem. For the price, quality, ease of use and to record my kids I made the correct decision to purchase this particular zoom.

I was initially rattled, but not any more!

I had been using my GH4 with a Panasonic 14-45 mm manual zoom lens.  For telephoto shots I had adapted lenses from Pentax and Nikon film cameras.  This worked well but was never a fluid process and the film lenses were heavy.  When I decided to order the Panasonic Lumix G X Vario PZ 45-175mm lens it was backordered.  Reviews of this lens were mixed but mostly positive.  Some complained of a rattle and sent them back while others seemed to be satisfied.  When the backorder was lifted I decided to place an order and give it a try.  When my lens arrived it too had a rattle!  The loudest rattle was the dislodged lens cap and was of no consequence, but there was a second and less audible rattle that seemed to come from inside the lens.  This was concerning!  I mounted the lens and found it to operate as expected.  It zoomed, focused, and took sharp pictures at both the short and long focal lengths.  Consulting the internet and several camera forums it seemed that the rattle was due to the power O.I.S. system.  The rattle disappears when the power to the camera is turned on and returns when the power is off.  My Panasonic 14-45mm lens is also a power O.I.S. system lens and I had never noticed that it too exhibited the same characteristics.  I decided to keep the lens and have not been disappointed.  The lens is much lighter than either of the adapted lenses I had been using which is a big plus.  The internal zoom eliminates the extended tube that many zoom lenses exhibit.  In my opinion this lens is a keeper.

I suddenly had to find a power zoom lens for smooth zooming while recording video. I am very new to these types of cameras, know very little about lenses, and had very little time to figure something out. So I was very thankful that Panasonic now has a power zoom lens. I read as much as I could about adapters, and other lenses - some which had better - but I needed to know absolutely that what I got fit my GH4 & would work immediately. It did & was excellent - very smooth zoom, easy, easy, easy! Also the location of the zoom button is fairly convenient. I was shooting outside first in blazing sun, then an hour later in heavy cloud cover. perfect for my use in both. I needed to zoom in on something the size of a soda bottle on a post 250 yards away. Simple to use, and it worked right away. Major KUDDOS to B&H for getting this delivered a full day before it was due. I paid for the two day & it arrived early which gave me that 2nd day to get the video just in time. Because it's a 45-175 (35mm Equivalent Focal Length: 90 to 350mm) it is not going to be as useful as my 14-140 is, but I am so glad I got this because the power zoom also holds the focus much better on manual focus. It's not parfocal, but much better than what I was trying to do with the other lens. Also - Thank you B&H for having the filter with it. I'll update this if I have any changes when I have used it a little more - Now though, I really need to find a power zoom that is in that 14-140 range....

Surprisingly nice for the price

This is the first native M4/3 lens that I purchased for my GH5, and it works very well. I mostly use all Canon glass with Metabones on the GH5, and that works great for most of my requirements. But I had a job that came up to shoot another live band, and previously I had been renting a DVX-200 for that, which I typically mount on a tripod to do smooth pan and zooms. The combination of the PZ 45-175 and the Libec ZC-LP controller now give me essentially the same functionality that I had with the DVX-200. So for a $470 investment (PZ and Libec), I no longer have to deal with the hassle and the cost of renting the DVX-200. This combo paid for itself after one job. I've read some user complaints here about the sharpness of this lens, but I think it's quite sharp overall, especially for a sub $1000 zoom. It loses some sharpness at the low and high end of the aperture ranges, but seems very nice in the mid aperture ranges. It is a plastic body, but I use it on rails with a matte box, so very little chance of it getting banged around too much. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was for how the zoom starts from a stop. It zooms very smooth and the speed can be controlled very well with ZC-LP, but I just wish it could start a little slower. It starts reasonably slow with either the ZC-LP or the control on lens body itself, but still not quite that super slow transition from stop to zoom start. That's the only thing the DVX-200 did better. Overall, I think the PZ 45-175 is a nice lens for the price. But most importantly, if you should ever need to expand the capability of a GH5 to simulate the functionality of a higher end camcorder, the PZ 45-175 with the Libec ZC-LP is a great solution for that. As I looked around for this solution for my GH5, actually I found that it is the ONLY solution available to do this - at least through my research.

I am an amateur photographer. I am pleased with this lens. Unbelievable that just two lens take me from 32 mm equivalent to full frame to 350 mm, and do it quite well. Color is excellent and pictures are sharper then I expected. The autofocus works quite well. I would definitely recommend this lens.

So far, I love this lens. I purchased this lens for my Panasonic GX9 for stills and for video. It is compact with the internal zoom and is lightweight for travel, It has a decent zoom range for my use. The image stabilization works really nicely even with my shaky hands. But having my tripod for the 175mm end is always a big help. Power zoom feature is smooth and handy for video. I like the reversible lens hood. In summary, for my use and what I was looking for in a telephoto zoom lens, this offers a great value.

Small Wonder

This lens is TINY. But it is powerful. It can pull in anything with it's focal range equivalent 90-350mm in FF. Doesn't extend when zooming or focusing. Fast and accurate AF.
