Panasonic Lumix G X Vario PZ 45-175mm f/4-5.6 Reviews

Great lens. Size x Performance

I have owned the 150-400/4.5 1.25x in the past and currently have the 50-200/2.8. This is a fraction of the performance at a fraction of the price. But the specific drops in performance and incredible difference in price makes this a 5 star product. I bought this to supplement my 50-200/2.8. The size is the key differentiator. You can look at the precise dimensions but the easiest way to think about it is that *subjectively* this feels like the burden of a just a iPhone Pro Max. It fits into a jacket pocket or waist bag easily. With lens corrections, chromatic aberrations are well controlled and you don’t get purple or green fringing. The images always look clean. You give up light gathering and sharpness. The drop in sharpness is also really interesting since the center sharpness and macro contrast is high. Again, you can look at MTF charts or measurements but subjectively, the loss in sharpness is similar to the loss in sharpness you get with the 150-400/4.5 or 50-200/2.8 at higher ISOs. At high ISOs, details aren’t quite as resolved but the image still looks clean with those flagship lenses. So subjectively the drop in resolution is similar to what I might expect with a stop or two of higher ISO. Combined with the actual optical f-ratio being slower, this lens becomes the lens that’s restricted in shooting envelope in terms of needing good daylight if you also need fast shutter speeds but unrestricted in physical size. The 50-200/2.8 is unrestricted in capability but restricted by its bulk.

Great Add on to the original 12-60mm that came with my Lumix

Smooth zoom, either manual or powered. I believe this is not really a zoom for uncompromising pros, but in my opinion beyond that level it does the job well. I just got it and I love it. Some people say it rattles when being moved. This is true and the manual says it is normal. It can only be a small issue when video recording with the built in microphone. I found out that with an external mike, it's okay. And also it rattles only when being shaked vigorously. For the price, I think this is a deal.

Will the zoom control work with BMPCC 4K using the ATEM Production Studio 4K? And if so, would that work with Optical HDMI?
Asked by: David
I understand from the helpdesk at BH that this lens, when mounted to the bmd micro 4k g2, and connected to the atem mini extreme, via a single optical hdmi cable with arc, that you can control focus, zoom, color correction plus transmission of video. So no other cable is required besides power. Is this not true?

Hi, can you use this lens for macro photography?
Asked by: David
The Panasonic Lumix G X Vario PZ 45-175mm may let you get close photos but it is not a macro lens. If you are looking to do serious macro work, I would consider looking at a dedicated macro lens.
