Sony 16-50mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

Be prepared for a wide range of photographic activities by picking up this Sony DT 16-50mm f/2.8 SSM Lens for your APS-C format A-mount camera. Featuring a wide-angle to telephoto equivalent zoom range of 24-75mm, this lens offers a constant f/2.8 aperture for consistent exposures and the ability to function well in low light. It also has an optical design that incorporates three extra-low dispersion elements and two aspherical elements, helping to minimize aberrations and flare. Ensuring smooth operation, the 16-50mm is equipped with a Super Sonic wave Motor (SSM) for fast and quiet autofocus and it has an internal focus design that allows a minimum focus distance of 11.8". Additionally, it has a dust- and moisture-resistant construction for use in adverse weather and a seven-blade circular diaphragm for smooth bokeh.

Covering wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives, this standard 16-50mm zoom is designed for APS-C format A-mount cameras, where it will provide a versatile 24-75mm equivalent focal length range.
A constant f/2.8 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also lends greater control over focus position for shallow depth of field techniques.
Three extra-low dispersion glass elements are featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
Two aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
A Super Sonic wave Motor (SSM) autofocus system provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance and contributes to more natural and intuitive manual focus control. The internal focusing design also helps achieve a minimum focus distance of 11.8".
Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

Sony 16-50mm f/2.8 reviews

DT 16-50mm f/2.8 SSM Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 44.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best all-around lens I've had! Im a professional photographer and my main photography environments are weddings and models. Before this lens I had the kit 18-70mm Sony lens and I knew I had to get a better lens. I went to my local Sony Store and tried out some lens that would replace this kit lens I had. Out of all the lenses that I tried out, this was the one I fell in love with. Image quality is outstanding! Focus is extremely fast and quiet. It is a little heavy, but its only a matter of getting used to. I recomend this lens to anyone that is looking for a superb quality All-Around lens. In my opinion better than the 16-80 CZ and a whole lot faster. f/2.8 aperture delivers amazing results in any focal distance.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good optics, great build. I am a long-time Canon shooter who recently received a Sony a65, so I needed a general purpose lens and chose the 16-50 2.8. The first thing I noticed was the build quality - easily Canon L quality. The focus motor is near silent, and it achieves focus very quickly. Image quality certainly did not disappoint, but I was also not blown away either. Bokeh is very pleasing, and sharpness is more than acceptable - with f/2.8 being very usuable. Also considering that this pretty much equates to a 24-75mm f/2.8, for the price you are getting quite the deal. All in all, I am very pleased with the lens - it does exactly what I need it to do. It's also parafocal, which is a nice addition especially when shooting video.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must Have Lens ! The 16-50mm f/2.8 zoom by Sony is the most versatile lens that I've ever owned, and if I was only allowed one lens this would be it. This lens is most often on my camera (the standard for me)and I use it for landscapes, group shots and even some portraits. The contrast, color and sharpness help provide for some excellent photos and I'm never without it. At f/2.8 low light conditions are no problem what-so-ever. I almost never need a flash when shooting indoor public gatherings, and night scenes are a breeze for this amazing hunk of glass. The lens is solid and well constructed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best kit lenses on the market This is a fantastic lens that fits perfectly with the sony a77 camera body. In terms of build quality, it is heavy, sturdy, fairly impressive given the large diameter. It feels rugged enough not to worry about it getting dirt or water on it. Picture quality is amazing, and when stepped down a few stops from 2.8 it is as sharp as I have ever seen. It also performs really well at 2.8. I actually find that it feels like a G series lens, perhaps it didn't get the G label because it was provided as a kit? In my opinion, it is worth spending a few extra hundred bucks to get this lens as opposed to the 18-135 mm or the 18-250 mm...although you don't get the range, you get amazing picture quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just amazing! This lens is just great. I still can't believe my eyes. I bought an alpha57 with the standard 18-55 lens, and decided (after reading several reviews) I should upgrade to the 16-50 f2.8 one from the a77. Ok, yes, it's big and heavy, and 72mm, but my GOD the sharpness & definition...! Just zoom in and you will find every detail is there. Low light situations? you're covered enough with this camera's good light handling capabilities and the 16-50 f2.8 Sony lens. It has really won the always on award for me... Fast focus, great video quality, excelent picture quality, manageable sun flare if used with the included accessory... it's definetely your upgrade from the standard kit zoom lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best walk around sony lens. Got this lens for my sony a77. I must say i have been overwhelmed by the build quality and the image quality on offer. f2.8 throughout the zoom range makes it a fast lens. This lens is very sharp throughout its range and gives the best results between f4 and f8. SSM motor is silent and makes autofocussing very fast. Image quality can be compared to the more expensive zeiss 16-80mm lens. The a77 corrects the chromatic aberration and vignetting but it may be significant in some other models. It is only for the APSC cameras and not compatible with full frame cameras. Dont forget that it has a large filter size of 72mm. Another good part about this lens is the internal focusing system, so you can use your polarising filter without any worry. The lens is slightly on the heavier size but has excellent build and is weather sealed(a bonus for outdoor photography). All in all an excellent piece of glass.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent performer I've been searching for a wide zoom for my a55 that matches the sharpness of my Tamron 28-75. This is the first one that does the job well. I've tried the Tamron and Sigma 17-50s an neither were near as sharp when cropped 100% (which often happens with a 50mm max focal lens). The Sony 16-50 is incredibly sharp even wide open - as sharp as my 35mm prime. The colors are gorgeous (compared to the Tamron warm cast). Build quality is superb - solid materials, lots of metal instead of all plastic. The zoom is nicely dampened although a bit stiff since it's brand new. It has a zoom lock but it's not needed (yet). I just sold my Tamron 28-75 and am happy to have a good APS-C replacement that covers this useful range at f/2.8. Ordered overnight shipping from BH at 4pm and had the lens at 10am the next day - great service BH!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best general zoom lens in the world! i have owned this lens for almost two years and it practically replaced my go-to prime lens, the sony 35mm f1.8. It is sharp at all focal length, with tiny drop in sharpness at 50mm wide open. At 24mm and 35mm it has maximum sharpness. I do not see a difference in sharpness at 35mm f2.8 compared to the SAL35f1.8. Although the prime lens can go to 1.8, it drops in sharpness, so I only switch when needed. The optimum sharpness is at f4 and you don't need to stop down further since you don't gain anything from stopping down more. Overall, this is the best lens to be mounted on your APS-C camera at all times. I only take it off when I need longer reach or wider aperture, which is rare for me. Just get it and never look back.
