Sunpak VL-LED-96 Overview

The Sunpak VL-LED-96 Compact Video Light provides high-power illumination for your camcorder or HDSLR camera with 96 ultra-bright LEDs. It also helps in capturing high-quality images in standard 4:3 and wide 16:9 HD formats. The LEDs emit a rich warm light and never heat up, no matter how long you have the light on.

This ultra-compact Video Light helps deliver better color, contrast and clarity when shooting video even in low-light situations. It comes with a convenient shoe or standard 1/4" x 20 mount that makes the light compatible with all HDSLR cameras and camcorders.

Powered by four alkaline / Ni-MH batteries, the compact video light ensures increased light output without the weight of added batteries. In addition to a variable power output control, the video light features a color 3500° K color correction filter and soft-light diffuser.

I bought 3 of them to provide the light I need for still life shots. I've also used them as lights for ZOOM calls that lasted 2 hours or more with rechargeable AA batteries and they've never run out of power during the calls. They are adjustable so you can use as much or as little light as you need and come with an orange file as well.

big, flimsy, bright and cheap

I got this light on sale for less than $4. Not much to complain about there. It is flimsly feeling, but comes with a couple of diffusers and it is very bright.

OK Compact Video Light. Be cognizant of the battery compartment cover. Very delicate not a good design. Light may flicker during video shoot. Great for blackouts during power outages.

Bottom part that is needed to keep batteries in place has rusted. Any way to just buy this part? Can't use lights without batteries.

Does any aa batteries work?

Mostly yes. I've used it with heavy duty/extra strength AAs when in a pinch, however you get more time using a long lasting battery like an alkaline. I have not tried rechargeable batteries like nicads which are only 1.2 volts instead of the 1.5 volt common batteries as I am concerned about color. Back in the days of studio tungsten lights and film I could always see a difference if the voltage was off.
