Plustek 4800 Reviews

Very Sloooooow scanner with SW bugs & irritations

By Dave

claimed speed 17 pages per minute. thats 3.5 seconds per page. It is no where even close to that speed at ANY setting of resolution or color / greyscale/ B&W. Actual speed is only 8 seconds per page (and that assumes 0 seconds to change the page). Sw is still fairly buggy, I can only scan about 30 pages in a row before restarting with a new file name. at 50 pages per, it sometimes crashes so you lose everything you have scanned to that point. Another irritating 'feature' is the alternate 180 rotate sometimes gets out of sync so you have to delete pages, rescan to attempt to get it back into sync. Manual has no clues on workflow, you tube videos are required viewing to get a clue for starting. After 45 days, I upgraded to a CZUR camera scanner for doing books which has its own set of problems (especially with page splitting).

Review is for Plustek in general

Reviewing Plustek in general. I own and use the OpticBook A300 Plus (scans up to 12x17, drivers avail for Windows only ATM) and uniquely to Plustek, they scan extremely close to the edge (a few mm), so they are especially suited to book scanning. Other book scanning options such as a scanner/camera mounted on a stand taking photos of an open book, and then re-straightening the images in software look like a bogus approach if you want quality. Stick to Plustek or similar book-specific flatbed scanners. The software Plustek provides is basic. I recommend using 3rd party software (extra cost, sure) - for ex. VueScan (Windows or Mac) supports most/all of the Plustek scanners (after you install Plustek's own drivers) for scanning. And once a book is scanned to images, use something like ABBYY FineReader PDF for OCR/conversion to PDF, Word docx and other formats. You can even make your own ePub's using a process such as VueScan (Mac or Windows) - FineReader PDF OCR (Mac or Windows) - Export to docx - Import docx to Vellum (Mac only) - lots of manual tweaking - Export to ePub.

question

I have a Mac and used to use it in some version of nacOS. However, Plustek stopped providing Mac driver updates, and I no longer even have an older driver. This week I tried an older driver I found on the Italian Plustek site, but it didnt work. Its a great scanner. Has anyone fugured out a way to get it working on a Mac with a recent macOS? I generally use VueScan but am willing to try other options if they work.
Asked by: Rick
FWIW, this situation appears to have changed since Jacob C. answered in 2018. I use a Mac running macOS 10.15.6 (Catalina), and the Plustek driver (version 3.0.0.1, dated 7/28/2020) and included MacPavilion software works well with it.

Is the glass flat to the plastic surround, i.e. ...

Is the glass flat to the plastic surround, i.e. could I use it to scan oversize books? (like music books, which generally only have A4 content, but the margin is huge) (I can't afford the A3 one, so don't go there). Basically, can you get a book that's slightly bigger than the glass to sit flat, or will it lip up as per usual?
Asked by: Monseigneur
The plastic surround on the scanner only has 3 sides. The glass goes right up to the edge of the scanner on the margin side of the book. All other sides have a surround. If the pages of your book are up to A4 size they will lay flat on the glass. It's ok if the cover is bigger, the pages will still lay flat as long as they are A4 size or smaller.

What is difference between 4800 and 3800 models?

What is difference between 4800 and 3800 models?
Asked by: Keith
As the seller points out, the 4800 is faster. Additionally, it scans closer to the edge of the glass (i.e., closer to the spine of the book) -- 2mm for the 4800 vs. 6mm for the 3800L. The scan edge was what led me to buy the 4800.

question

What is the modulation transfer function at 1200DPI? I ask this question because every scanner I have used gives faded output, that I must raise the gamma to make the scans usable. This adds noise to the scan.
Asked by: Anonymous
While this scanner scans at 1200dpi I would not recommend using that high of a resolution to scan books. You will get HUGE file sizes if you do that. I would recommend scanning books at 300dpi maximum. If you need high resolution, high color accuracy scans for artwork etc, I'd recommend taking a look at our OpticPro A320.

question

What is the edge size?
Asked by: Pamela
Pam, I'm not exactly sure of your question. But let me give it a try.The design of the scanner enables it to scan within 2mm from the actual book spine/binding. The scanner glass goes right to the edge of the scanner. There is no frame area on the front of the scanner. This scanner is designed to scan books up to 8.5 x 11 or A4. If you need to scan a larger book, take a look at our OpticBook A300. It will scan up to A3 sized books.Does any of this answer your question?

question

How long does it actually take to scan an A4 page? THe specs say 3.5 seconds, however this PC Magazine review says 9 seconds. That's a huge difference. How does it compare to OptiBook 3600?
Asked by: Alexander
Hi Alexanderthe scanning speed is depend on your setting , system you are using to scan and solution you want. we tested it scans at 3.5 seconds for a grayscale 200dpi A4 size. OB3600 scan at 7 sec per page.
