question
what controller do i need for ADJ mega tri64 profile dmx-512 with 7 dmx channel modes? Thx, Craig
The DMX Operator is a great controller with a lot of options for the price. And, since it will support fixtures with up to 16 channels, you can always add a 12 channel or more fixture in the future. It has plenty of banks with eight scenes for each, so there are a lot of individual settings you can save for colors, brightness, etc... Those can be seated manually, cycled through the bank on auto, or accessed from the 6 chases. I also like that it has a usb light plug on the back for a gooseneck light which is handy to have when you hit the blackout button and are momentarily unable to read the controller until your eyes adjust. Lighted keys would have been a nice feature, but definitely not going to happen in this price range. The only downside to the unit is the limited number of chases. You can get around this in most cases by considering a bank as a chase and cycling though it sequentially on auto mode. With 30 banks, you can add quite a few chases that way. It would have been nice to also have them toggle like the channels to get 12 instead of 6. It has a few quirks that you get used to like if you select one chase and then another, they're stacked instead of toggled so unless you deselect a chase before selecting another, the first one is still active when you deselect the second one. Those are minor though, and easily worked around. This unit suits my need's perfectly. I'm in a band and needed to be able to quickly set up light sequences that could run on their own for several songs or an entire set if needed. We don't need a fancy synced light show but by using chases changing some of the lights to sound activation mode it mixes it up a it more than just color fades.I suppose it's even possible to drive this via midi and to use it to create a totally choreographed light show, but that's more than I want to get into and one more thing to possibly go wrong on a gig where my main job is playing and not fussing around with the lights.
