The Vello FreeWave Viewer Wireless Live View Remote for Nikon contains a 3.5" live view TFT-LCD monitor and 2.4GHz radio transmitter to provide a wireless viewing system that also enables remote shutter control from a distance up to 200' away from the camera.

The live view monitor features a 3.5" display with a 320 x 240 resolution that is able to provide a real time view of what your camera is seeing. The monitor's design integrates a remote shutter release button that supports half-press control for pre-focusing and acquiring auto exposure settings. Additionally, an enlarge mode is available for magnifying details within the scene. A dedicated button allows switching between AV (live view) and CCTV modes for different perspectives of monitoring and a channel switch button permits changing between different transmitter channels. A 1/4"-20 tripod socket is located on the bottom of the unit and the brightness of the display can be manually controlled.

The transmitter can be attached to the camera via its hot shoe or to a 1/4"-20 threaded mount and connects to the camera using both an AV and a shutter release cable. The AV connection provides the live view signal for remote viewing on the monitor and the shutter release cable allows for wirelessly releasing the shutter from the monitor. A CCTV camera is also integrated into the transmitter's design and incorporates a 45mm lens (35mm equivalent focal length) to provide a slightly wider-than-normal perspective for viewing subjects in front of the camera. The CCTV camera is especially useful for situations when using a telephoto or long lens to photograph details and monitoring when a moving subject is about to enter the frame. Additionally this camera's functionality is ideal for use when the connected camera does not support live view or if trying to conserve the camera's battery life for extended viewing sessions. The 2.4GHz radio transmitter operates amongst four selectable channels for greater control when more than one unit is being used within 200' proximity.

Included with the transmitter and monitor are both AV and shutter release cables, which allow live view monitoring and shutter control with Nikon D700, D300/300s, D7000, D90, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3200, and D3100 DSLR cameras. If only controlling the shutter via the remote monitor and using the transmitter's CCTV as the viewing source, a wide range of shutter release cables are optionally available. The monitor requires four AA batteries for use and standby operation can last approximately 500 hours, while dedicated use will last approximately 10 hours per charge. The transmitter also requires four AA batteries and will last approximately 100 hours in standby mode and 8 hours in usage mode.

Camera Compatibility

The following cameras support live view monitoring on the wireless viewer when the AV cable is connected between the transmitter and camera:

Nikon
  • D700
  • D300
  • D300s
  • D7000
  • D90
  • D5200
  • D5100
  • D5000
  • D3200
  • D3100

  • Additionally, remote shutter release and viewing using the built-in CCTV camera is possible by using an optional Vello RCC-C1, RCC-C2, RCC-N3, RCC-O1, RCC-O2, RCC-P1, or RCC-S1 cable for extensive camera support.

    Wireless Monitoring and Shutter Release

The combination of the wireless live view monitor and transmitter enables real time monitoring of the scene at hand using either the compatible camera's live view source or the transmitter's built-in CCTV camera. This allows you to remotely view your composition and release the camera's shutter from a distance, making it ideal for photographing wildlife or shy subjects or for placing the camera in difficult-reach-positions.

    Live View Monitor

The wireless live view monitor has a 3.5" (320 x 240) TFT-LCD screen for viewing either a live view image from the camera or a CCTV image from the transmitter's built-in camera. The viewer's design incorporates a shutter release button as well as controls for enlarging the transmitter's image, changing the radio channel, accessing the menu, and an LED power status indicator is also available for monitoring battery life. The shutter release supports half-press functionality for pre-focusing and setting the auto exposure and, additionally, single, continuous, bulb, and delayed shooting modes are supported. A 1/4"-20 socket is also integrated into the viewer for attaching to a stand or tripod. Power is provided to the viewer by either four AA batteries or a connected USB power source.

    Transmitter

The transmitter operates over an ISM 2.4GHz frequency, with four selectable channels, and provides up to a 200' working range from which to view a live view or CCTV image on the wireless viewer. The transmitter connects to the camera with dedicated cables to both a shutter release and AV input, or just to a camera's shutter release port if using only the built-in CCTV camera for monitoring. The integrated camera uses a 45mm (35mm equivalent focal length) lens to provide a slightly wider-than-normal perspective of the scene in front of the camera, and can attach to a camera via its hot shoe. Alternatively, a 1/4"-20 socket is also incorporated into the design for mounting to a stand or tripod. The transmitter also uses either four AA batteries or a connected USB power supply as its power source.

Was even able to connect FreeWave Viewer to a Sony camcorder and view wirelessly. Unable to control camcorder thru FreeWave, but hey this is a Live View Remote for NIKON. Still, very nice produce to have.

I use this with me Nikon d5300 and it does everything is says it does. I love this product. It allows me to be far away from my camera, enabling me to get some great wildlife shots.

Being able to set lighting while the camera is on a tripod is a big plus. This unit also is a remote shutter release. Unfortunately when plugged in the camera display is disabled. And although mention is made of using it with Olympus cables, I could not find them. And I could not find much info at the Vello site. But the remote viewing is great.

    Very affordable remote video link

I have only scratched the surface, but I often shoot from an extended pole. Previously I was shooting blind, but now I have a video link with a remote shutter button. The down side is that the video is hard to see in bright sunlight, it needs some sort of flip up shade. I bought this with my own cash. B&H offered a very decent sale with free shipping, so despite hard times, I took the plunge. An amazing capability for very little money.

    remote view is priceless

This remote was awesome. To be able to see what I was photographing when the camera was 18' above me on a stand was invaluable. The remote was fairly easy to set up although it took a little bit of time to figure out exactly how to make it work correctly. All in all it was worth the time and cost for this unit. I look forward to the next time I can use it.

great concept of being able to remotely fire cameras while using either the camera live view or the bult-in transmitter cam the image on TFT-LCD monitor (when using the bult-in transmitter cam) is mediocre but useable; that may not be critical since the camera sees and takes its own view -- I have not yet used the monitor with live view from camera

Purchased this to take wildlife photos , which having just had a few trials of & seems to function well. On the downside, setting it up was very hit & miss, the manual did not help much as it is very small & did not give enough information I am still not sure if I am using it right.

    question

How does it work paired to the Vello's Wireless ShutterBoss Timer Remote (Nikon 10-Pin Connection) B&H # VERCWN1 ? Mfr # RCW-N1 which I already own? Can both be interconnected in a way where I'm able to use the ShutterBoss Timer and check the images on the FreeWave Viewer? How is get the communication between them? Any other accessory advised for that? Tks
    Asked by: Anonymous
The Vello FreeWave Viewer Wireless Live View Remote for Nikon cannot work with the Vello ShutterBoss, as they have different connectivity points to the camera. The FreeWave Viewer is designed to work with the FreeWave remote, which is included in this bundle and connects to your camera via an A/V output. The two remotes both require the use of different transmitters, which would not be possible to use in conjunction with one another as they both use the camera's hot shoe.

    question

Can the shutter release button on the Vello Freewave Viewer receiver (model FW-VN) be locked open for long exposures?
    Asked by: Anonymous
With the menu selection to Continuous and the camera set to BULB, pressing the shutter button will open the shutter and pressing again will close the shutter to finish the exposure.

    question

Hi dear,Is FW-VN is compatible with Nikon D610 ?and do I have to buy any other accessory to use it with D7000 & D610 if it is compatible with D610.ThanksRegardsKuldip Banga
    Asked by: Anonymous
The FreeWave Wireless Live View Remote for Nikon will only work with Nikon bodies that feature an A/V output. The D7000 will have this connection option, but the D610 will not. Included with the transmitter and monitor are both A/V and shutter release cables. Besides AA batteries, you would not need any additional accessories to use this product with the D7000. This is a current list of the Nikon bodies that are compatible with the FreeWave Live View Remote: Nikon D700, D300/300s, D7000, D90, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3200, and D3100

    question

Does this work on a Canon 50D and 7D
    Asked by: Anonymous
Unfortunately, this FreeWave Viewer is for Nikon, so it would not be compatible with the Canon 50D or 7D. For these two cameras, you would need the FreeWave Viewer Wireless Live View Remote for Canon (B&H # VEFWVC).

    question

I'm a little confused. A couple of answers to the question of this product's compatibility with the Nikon D800 state that it's not compatible, but it looks like the box contents include a 10 pin cable that is compatible with both the D800 and D800E. So, unless I'm missing something, it looks like it can be used with that model. Is that correct?
    Asked by: Anonymous
Unfortunately, the Vello FreeWave Viewer Wireless Live View Remote for Nikon is not compatible with the D800, as this remote requires an A\/V output to be used, and the D800 does not feature this connection.
