Eartec XT-3 overview

  • 1Description

The COMSTAR XT-3 3-User Full Duplex Wireless Intercom System from Eartec is a fully-functional wireless intercom that offers full duplex communication in a simple design that does not require the use of beltpacks. The system consists of a Com-Center base station and 3 wireless headsets. Additional headsets can be added to the system, allowing you to create a wireless network of up to 8 users who can all communicate simultaneously with no delay or voice activation, ideal for applications where teams need full use of their hands. You can even split users into 2 groups of 4 people, or bring everyone together in conference mode.

Each headset connects wirelessly to the Com-Center at distances of up to 400 yards in any direction, allowing the headsets to be up to 800 yards apart while still enjoying full communication capabilities. The around-ear cushions and padded headbands provide lasting comfort for all-day use. Integrated controls make it easy to adjust the volume of the headsets and program them in the field. The COMSTAR system is self tuning, so no remote antenna is needed.

Each headset has a microphone at the end of a positionable boom, allowing you to place the mic in the best spot for excellent vocal pickup. A foam windscreen reduces the effects of wind noise and breath pops for ultimate clarity. The headsets have rechargeable lithium batteries that provide up to 10 hours of operation, while the Com-Center has a rechargeable NiMH battery that provides up to 6 hours of operation. The Com-Center also has an AC wall plug and a battery sled for disposable AA batteries to give you additional powering options. A multi-port desktop charger is included that allows you to charge the Com-Center and headset batteries simultaneously.

The system works in the 1900MHz frequency band, which is reserved by the FCC for "PCS" voice communication, so no license is required. The system is certified for use in the USA, Canada, Europe, and Australia.

This system includes the following items:
1 x Com-Center Base Station
2 x Single-Ear Headsets
1 x Double-Ear Headset
1 x Multi-Port Battery Charger

Eartec XT-3 reviews

COMSTAR XT-3 3-User Full Duplex Wireless Intercom System is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great features, but expensive We purchased this set to use in volunteer-driven live theatre performances. Having high-quality & simple to use comms (between stage manager, lights & sound) was key, particularly when operators are in-experienced. Having no belt-pack or cables to drop or break was ideal. The Comstar XT-3 was one of the more expensive units we looked at, along with units from Portacom and Telex, but we are certainly not disappointed with Eartec's Comstar XT-3. The ability to be totally portable (using one of two included Ni-MH battery-packs) on the base-station is perfect. A sled for AA primary cells is fantastic for when the rechargeable packs wear out. The headsets are reasonably light and easy to use. They do sit very tightly on the head, particularly the single-cup headsets (reactions from others was mixed - I must have a big head...) An extra fourth Li-ion battery is also pleasantly provided. The foam-padded, heavy-duty plastic case is perfect, and fits everything neatly, with child-resistant locking clips and two padlock holes for extra security. Our biggest concerns lie in the headsets themselves. The headbands do't appear to contain any steel band reinforcement, so we are not convinced of their long-term reliability. Also, the buttons used to mute the mic and adjust volume are very loud in your ear when they click. Perhaps a softer, rubber membrane button (like the blue power button) would be more suitable. Inserting the headset battery packs can be a bit fiddly, and care needs to be taken to ensure you don't get them inserted upside-down and jammed. Interference is always a given with any wireless system, but the XT-3's were quite good at rejecting most noise. We did experience some buzz and hum, but put that down to interference from a nearby Wi-Fi router or mobile cell tower. The noise floor is also reasonably low. The range is also very impressive and very true to the 400m line-of-sight from base station. Would certainly recommend these to anyone else looking for a neat and tidy, simple system that is easily expanded.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Audio Delight I used to use press-to-talk units before and they are bulky to operate on the fly. I wanted an auto-duplexing unit that was cordless and hands-free. I looked at reviews of every model B&H sold before I bought. The clear choice was the Eartec and I must say I am very pleased. At a large wedding shoot with two operators and five cameras, the audio worked flawlessly. It is clean and crisp - OK for a headset. Full duplexing worked well. Too well, as we talked over some very important audio segments, making jokes. The battery life is EXCELLENT, never once changing batteries over a 6 hour period during the shoot. The range is great. We were about 250 feet apart at the maximum distance from my zoom perch to his altar stalking. It also works through walls and glass. Maximum range of 400 feet? Maybe across water or open land, but 150 feet if three or four walls are between you and the receiver. More than enough for us. And since the receiver is portable, we just left in on battery mode and drug it with us wherever we went, chatting away. The chargers worked fast when done, the case is professional and practical, and the headsets are stylish if not beautiful. BUT.... they do grip your noggin tight so, after three to four hours you'll notice it. The Eartec will work great inside most any auditorium I believe. All you have to do is whisper and it's audible - even above the crowds. When you think about what communication brings to a run-n'-gun shoot, they make editing even funner than ever and two cam shots a breeze. Yeah, they're pricey. And yeah, they're worth it.
