4TB Deskstar 3.5" SATA III Internal Desktop Hard Drive is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 168.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Satisfied, Bought Two! I bought my first drive back in 2012 and have been using it strong as a Media Drive since. Decided to buy a second drive back in 2014 and have been using it strong as Second Media Drive. Both Drives work great running at 40+ Celsius without cooling and average 25-30 Celsius with light cooling. I'm considering buying a third Drive and am extremely happy with this product. As expected, it will make noise if its almost full and you are accessing it however that noise is very quiet and only heard if your case is open and close by. I Love the performance and reliability of this product and my only request is for it to become cheaper! :)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Runs too hot. Quality control issues I bought two of these HDD since they are the only 4TB HDD's available currently. One of the HDD, right out of the box triggers a S.M.A.R.T. alert saying, Hard drive failure is imminent. So, that disk needed to be exchanged. Both HDD's run idle at 131F-133F in a 71F ambient room temperature. These HDD's wont have much of a life to them; so, the 3 year manufacturer's waranty will most likely be needed. Dont even consider running these HDD's without full fault tollerance. I would rate this HDD only 2 STARS; however, the B&H Photo customer service helped me exchange the HDD without hassle, so that brought the STAR rating to 3 STARS.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from not so good for the size I was so excited to get 2 4tb drives, so after loading it into my Drobo S and formatting them I started to load data to it. what a nightmare that was. anything over 3gb would kill it and create a disk failure. After 6 disk failures, reformats, and 2 hours of searching forums about this issue; it's extremely common for this brand. I decided to return them. It has something to do with the magnets on the write head of the drive. The more bits that are written at a time will cause the magnets on the write heads to have issues thus creating the disk failures. The amount of space isn't worth the hassle of the disk failures and loss of my precious data.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Looking for a Hitachi Drive I got Western Digital ??? I've only had this drive for 3 weeks, so it's hard to give a just and complete review. However I've got something to say... About a year ago Google published some statistics where Hitachi drives showed a far superior ranking over Western Digital, Seagate and others. Actually the worst was Seagate with a high percentage failing within the first year. Hitachi came out as the best. This drive was advertised as a Hitachi drive but it turned to be an HGST drive which when I finally got had a Western Digital logo. Anyway, so far so good. B&H delivered promptly. No complaints there. We'll keep you informed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Drives for RAIDs Like all mechanical drives, HGST drives are coming down in price. This makes RAIDs for affordable and expandable than ever. We've more than doubled our data size in the past year and a half. We have several large arrays, with redundant backup systems and dozens of smaller 4-8 bay arrays. All of our new bays house HGST 3-6TB drives. These drives are reliable, affordable, quiet & flimsy. All mechanical drives are flimsy... You drop them once and more than likely you'll have to replace it. HGST does a great job in the packing and shipping of their drives. I would recommend Deskstar drives for any business that is looking to expand, or create, RAID arrays.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Noisy drive The package came with a dented box, I guess UPS is being so busy or careless to handle fragile item in a proper manner. Fortunately, the drive is still working. My Dell Inspiron desktop recognizes the new drive at boot. Window 7 recognizes the drive after running Control Panel -> Computer Management -> Disk Management (allocation) Access time for read and write is three times faster then the Green SATA 3 drive I had before. One annoying thins is the drive makes whizzing and clicking noises and vibrates during read and write access. I wonder if this noisy operation will hurt the drive in the long run and I can end up loosing 4TB of my data some day!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cool, fast, caches well, low power Please don't leave bad reviews for either B&H Photo or the HDD all over the web, without reading the info below and understanding the tech. DYI tech takes a little reading. These drives will work with older motherboards with some easy tweaks or cheap add on controller cards. Just google for info and for forums.Make sure your motherboard's BIOS and chipset supports the higher capacity. So don't hesitate to buy these larger drives. They are the future and save a lot of energy and space. If your not sure you can always buy a controller card for cheap..... High quality engineering. Well built and protected PCB and casing.Cool running, fast, excellent caching, handles large and small file writes and transfers very well, great spin up speed.I can confirm the 7200rpm speed and 64mb cache. You need to format this with GPT in Disk management in Computer management.Formatted Total available capacity is 3.6 TB. That's how formatting works.Works well with Windows 7 64 bit.Hitachi's always have been VERY relaible.Handles USB to SATA and e-sata convertors well and the full capacity is recognised.Remember to buy an SATA 3 cable from B&H as I bought several and they all allow the SATA 3 speed! Stuff sold by other retailers are suspect nowadays. ......CONS:Too expensive for this size. The Thailand flooding caused this, but it is long over now and hope Hitachi reduces the prices on these drives to pre flood levels.OTHER THOUGHTS.B&H Photo is my new go to place for electronics. The procesing and shipping is simply fast and wonderfull. All the stuff I have bought so far have been top notch brand new in original packaging and they arrive in 2-3 days even with standard shipping! They pack harddrives with TWO DIFFERENT MATERIALS FOR EXTRA SAFETY. That is another reason to buy from B&H, because HDDs are very sensitive.I used go to this other place, but B&H Photo's prices are wonderful!I plan to get about 5-6 more of these and my company wants 100, if these drives goes down to the $200 level. So here is waiting for that discount :-)I need to buy some quickly.Buy as much as you need of this model, as it is rock solid.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Be careful with this product Drives above 2TB need to be user programmed to access storage space above the 2TB. The instructions lead to a site to download software which was supposed to do this. The software was totally useless and I had to find a 3rd party software online to do it, which also requires another HDD to be installed on. Kinda stupid it wasn't set up from the factory. Also 3rd party software was accidentally installed on the 4TB drive and I had to reinstall windows 8.1 b/c it screwed it up during the HDD partition extending. However overall fantastic product, just need to have software ACTUALLY available and ez to use or just factory set-up.
