Tangent element-Mf Overview

The Tangent Devices Element Mf Panel is the "Multifunction" panel of a set of four Element panels that replace a keyboard and mouse in operating select functions of supporting software, such as of supporting color-grading software. The panels can be used to achieve precise results quicker and with more technical gratification than possible with a keyboard and mouse. The list of supporting software is a growing one and includes such applications as DaVinci Resolve, SCRATCH, On-Set Dailies, Mistika, and YoYo.

The controls of the panels can be programmed and reprogrammed to operate different functions. The manufacturers of supporting software designate the functions that each panel and its controls can operate, and the manufacturers make available the details of their designations in either the respective software manuals or by phone or email upon contact, depending on the manufacturer.

Upon a control's being programmed, its functionality gets labeled on the display screen of its panel. When reprogrammed, its functionality gets re-labeled. The display screens have white OLED bulbs and show crisp, high-contrast, high-resolution easy-to-read characters.

The Mf panel has two display screens and twelve programmable buttons. It has one programmable trackerball and one programmable ring atop the ball. It has separate reset buttons for the ball and the ring, two buttons to program functions like ALT and Shift into, and standard transport buttons such as "play" and "stop". The trackerball and ring work by optical laser pickup for high-precision and extended life. The trackerballs can be removed for cleaning, and they can be reinstalled quite easily.

The different panels can be used individually or all together in a set. More than one of each type can be incorporated into a set, and a widely-functional control system can thus be put together. The panels are made from precision laser-cut solid aluminum. They neatly attach to each other's sides by magnet, and they take up a desk footprint of only 7.9 inches deep. They are USB-powered and connect to a computer each by a single USB cable via plug-and-play functionality, without need for drivers to be installed. The panels can also optionally be used with Tangent's HUB service, which allows the layouts of the panels' controls to be customized. (Supporting software would have to also support HUB API.)

Tangent element-Mf Reviews

Finally, a Control Panel for Capture One!!

This was used to replace the Palette Gear Pro set. While the Palette worked really well for Lightroom, It is very limited in C1, my main editing software. So off to eBay it went. At first glance, this seems to be an expensive setup, but that is relative. Upon further investigation, I found that the Elements panels are only a bit higher when one compares the number of controls you get. Whats more these controls have a smaller footprint (compared to Palette). The controls are not mapped out keyboard shortcuts, but rather integrated with C1. Of course you can map out shortcuts for other apps like Mail, as I have done. Adjusting has always been butter smooth in C1, but these controls bring it to a whole new level. Editing has now become easier, faster, more fluid, and just plain fun! The unit seems well made. It has a nice heft and sits solidly on my desktop. The MF has buttons and a trackball / adjustment wheel combo. The controls feel solid and very responsive. I first bought the KB panel and found I needed a bit more control, so I got the MF as well. I'm looking hard at the Ripple for color grading in C1.

love it!!

question

What USB hub does B&H sell that is sufficient to power all the Tangent Element panels at once?
Asked by: Ames
Unfortunately the item you recommended is not a USB hub. However your suggestion to use the StarTech 4-Port SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Hub (Black) B&H # STST4300USB3 in an alternative post is good.

question

If using in a video editing program (like Adobe Premiere Pro), can the jog wheel be used as a fader for precise audio level control?
Asked by: Anonymous
The Tangent Element MF Panel is actually designed with Color Correcting Programs like Scratch and DaVinci Resolve in mind. It is possible you'll be able to configure it for audio control, but that is not something we recommend. You may want to email [email protected] for further advice and suggestions on more appropriate tools for adjusting audio levels.

question

Can this be used for FCPX?
Asked by: William S.
FCPX does not offer explicit support for external control surfaces. It does however have extensive keyboard-shortcut capabilities. Tangent have used this ability to allow the Element panels to control FCPX in a satisfactory manner. Take a look at the support tab of the Tangent website www.tangentwave.com and choose Element as the Product type and Apple FCPX as the Application. More details will then be revealed.

question

Does it work with CaptureOne 10?
Asked by: James G.
The Element MF Panel should work fine with Capture One Pro, B&H #PHC1PRO10. Tangent actually offers documentation on their website for setting up their panels with various software, including Capture One Pro. First you'll need to go to this link:http://bit.ly/2hwQ6DtScroll down and click on Application Support . Next select Phase One Capture One Pro from the drop down menu. From there you'll be able to scroll down the page a bit more and download the Documentation Capture One Pro and Tangent panels configuration .

question

Is this compatible with Avid Media Composer 8.X?
Asked by: Ames
Unfortunately Avid have not added native support for Tangent panels within any of their products. It is still possible to map keyboard shortcuts to the panel controls however this is obviously far more limited than native support.

question

Can we use it with lightworks
Asked by: Anonymous
Well, although I work mostly with Davinci Resolve and SpeedGrade, I found that a release from 2011 that said Lightworks will support the new TUBE protocol giving full access to Tangents new line of Element control panels. So, I think you can use it with LightWorks. Best regards.
