Olympus HLD-6 overview

  • 1Description

Offering improved handling control along with more versatile power options, the HLD-6 Power Battery Holder from Olympus is a dedicated auxiliary grip for the OM-D E-M5 mirrorless camera. This grip's unique design separates into two parts: one for shooting in the horizontal orientation, and one for the vertical orientation. When shooting horizontally, the grip's size can be minimized to simply include a secondary shutter release button and larger grip for more comfortable handheld shooting.

With both pieces together, the grip is ideal for use when shooting vertically, and features an additional shutter release for easier access as well as a pair of assignable function buttons for adjusting camera settings. This grip also has a DC-IN jack for continuous power via the optional AC-3 Power Adapter, and it can also accept a second BLN-1 lithium-ion battery to effectively double to battery life of the camera. When shooting with the second battery, you can configure which battery to use first, and the camera will automatically switch between the two for uninterrupted shooting. Additionally, matching the E-M5's physical design, the HLD-6 is also dust- and splash-proof to maintain the ability to work in trying environments.

    Olympus HLD-6 reviews

HLD-6 Power Battery Holder is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 43.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from It may be pricey, But its worth it. Like others, I found this product adds multiple benefits to the camera making it a bag for your buck. I love the feel of this on the camera, it gives you real solid firm grip on camera in either portait or landscape positions. The buttons are in perfect and well thought out positions, and they even have recess area to put the rubber plug when it mounts so you don't loose it. It also holds an extra battery which is invaluable in long days, be they for leisure or professional. I like the extra weight it adds to the camera for a professional feel. The only negatives on this is the price and it NOT including the extra battery (very lame Olympus).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Marvelous Improvement You bought the best Micro 4/3 camera, the OM-D; now buy the single best accessory Olympus offers for it. The HLD-6 improves the handling by a quantum leap, especially when shooting portraits. The second shutter button makes portrait shooting so much more relaxed, and the added controls are in the perfect places. All the other third party grips, except for some which do add a tripod mount for portraiture, don't come close. The quality and attention to detail of the HLD-6 is the VERY BEST. And the battery issue--just put the battery in the handle and carry a charged spare in your bag or pocket. No hay problema!!! No disassembly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great addition to the camera The grip, two grips actually, makes the camera much easier to hold steady in both landscape and portrait modes. Alone, the landscape grip gives a much improved purchase on the camera and moves the sub-dial and shutter button to a much more comfortable location. Adding the battery pack and portrait grip makes the camera much steadier in portrait mode and provides conveniently located main and sub-dials, shutter button, and function buttons. With the HLD-6 I find I can hand hold the camera with longer lenses or lower shutter speeds as well as being able to shoot twice as long without changing The battery.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Should be standard equipment The grip extension provides much needed additional control for the OM-D. It is made from similar high quality materials and basically feels like it's part of the camera. Unfortunately, it has to be removed to change the battery (which is a quite common occurrence.) While the vertical portion of the grip doubles the battery capacity of the OM-D (and makes battery access much easier), the buttons and dial on the rear of the grip are poorly placed which makes it hard to shift from landscape to portrait and back. I just use the grip extension and save the vertical grip for when I need the extra battery power.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent hand grip and battery holder I bought this product because the Olympus OMD, while possessing excellent ergonomics for such a small camera, is simply too small in my hand to give me the kind of grip I need. This two piece unit is an excellent addition, which gives me exactly the grip I need and can be used either as the smaller hand grip unit alone or with the extra battery holder with vertical shutter release. I use both components because they give me the best overall stable grip and make holding the camera in the vertical position extremely comfortable. I have nothing negative to say about this device. The price is high, but the quality and synchronization with the camera itself merits this price. Using this unit elevates the entire combination to a real prosumer environment, the first micro 4/3 camera to enter this higher level of capability

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 6 month lifespan - avoid Olympus As many reviewers have said, the OM-D E-M5 really NEEDS this grip in order to be useable. Unfortunately, it has a roughly six month lifespan. I had to send mine in, along with the camera body, for repair 8 months ago. That was 6 months after receiving it, directly from Olympus. It took two months for them to return it. Six months later, it's exhibiting exactly the same behavior they supposedly fixed last time. So, they didn't really fix it, but they expect me to pay to have them not fix it, again. Not happening. The thing is junk, and so is Olympus's reputation, as far as I'm concerned.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Must Have at a Premium Price First off only gave it four stars because of the price. This make the camera handle so much better. Adds extra controls. The second battery really helps for extended shoots. I switch batterys when the extra is dead, keeping the main as a backup. It is nice that it splits into to pieces but have only been using it with both. Great fit and finish like the camera. The current rebate helps but should cost about half what it does or it should come with an extra battery and ac adapter.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pricey but useful I got this for my OM-D EM-5 after buying the Olympus 40-150mm Pro lens. The camera was very difficult to hold without it. The grip gives my fingers something substantial to wrap around for a secure hold and better balance. Right now, I'm not using the battery holder, which really makes the camera heavy to carry around. I wish they sold the grip separately. Two cons: First: you have to remove the grip to access the battery compartment. I don't see any way to have designed it so it didn't block the battery compartment but it's still annoying. Second: with my small hands, it's a little difficult for me to reach the main dial, which I use to adjust aperture. I'm going to have to re-assign the sub dial for that purpose.
