Vanguard 253CT Overview

  • 1Description

Vanguard's Alta Pro 253CT Carbon Fiber Tripod is made of carbon fiber to provide a lightweight (3.66 lb, 1.66 kg) but very sturdy and versatile camera support. The tripod has a maximum load capability of 15.4 lb (7 kg), extends to 65" (1.65 m), and folds down to only 24.8" (63cm) which makes it easy to attach to a gear bag, or backpack.

The center column has a tilting bracket which can rotate a full 360 degrees from a standard vertical position. It is a key feature to help you position the tripod and your equipment at unusual angles. Plus, the column is spring loaded to provide your equipment with protection against shocks. The column comes with a retractable weight hook from which you can attach a gear bag or removable stone bag (not included) for added stability on any terrain.

The three-section legs are quickly secured into their position with one-twist leg locks. Rubber feet with retractable spikes help secure the legs on rough terrain.

The Alta Pro 253CT is a popular choice for those who need a tripod that is flexible and easy to set up. It meets the needs for landscape, wide angle and macro photography and a wide range of other applications. A tripod head is NOT included.

Supports up to 15.4 lb (7 kg); up to 11 lb (5 kg) when center column is tilted.
The Alta Pro has an innovative Multi-Angle Center Column (MACC) system which allows you to move the column from zero to 360 degree angles in variable vertical and horizontal positions. The multi-angle center column can be used for low and unique angles that you could never achieve with a conventional column.
Upper leg sections have all-weather rubber grips to protect your hands under any weather conditions.
An Instant Swivel Stop-n-Lock (ISSL) system securely repositions the center column in one simple movement, in just a few seconds, while maintaining the tripod's balance and stability. This feature makes ultra-wide angle and macro photography a breeze.
The tripod has a built-in bubble level to aid in obtaining an accurate horizontal position.
Your investment is protected with the manufacturer's limited lifetime warranty.
All Vanguard pan heads and ball heads will fit on the 253CT.

    Vanguard 253CT Reviews

ALTA PRO 253CT TRIPOD is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good light weigt tripod There are big compromises between light and rigid where tripods are concerned. I tried a few at my local shop and found them rather willowy when extended but they were light. This guy is not the lightest but it is one of the steadiest at its fighting weight. I paired it with a RRS ball head and it works just dandy with both the D750 with a 300 f4 and the D7200 with the 150 f2.8 Sigma. No vibration when mounted and the whole set up is quick to use. Tripods can be a pain but this one with the right ball head is pretty good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Why did i wait? Should have purchased sooner. I have purchased several different tripods, keeping cost down. combined I have spent the same amount and have three dogs. I should have made the leap for this unit a long time ago. Very light weight, solid and easy to use. Lives up to the description. Remember to use the included weight bag in windy conditions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Carbon Fiber Tripod I have several carbon fiber tripods. Some I have paid triple what this one cost. I can say the build is every bit as good as my others. This is a light tripod great for everyday shooting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Carbon Fiber Tripod by Vanguard Bought this tripod to use on location shoots that I fly too. Weight and size are an issue for checking bagage. The tripod is great for all the different positions you can configure it to. It is really light compared to my aluminum Gitzo. I will plan to use a remote shutter release because it is much less stable than my gitzo. Overall I am please with it for the price, but I would recommend using a remote trigger.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from as advertised Have had it for a month now. Bought it with a sirui head and the combo is great. I'm 6'2 and have to stoop a little if I don't extend the post, but it's very comfortable. Very sturdy despite light weight. Takes a little getting used to but will shoot very low however must play with the positioning so it won't tip over (not overly extend the post). Overall is great.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Twist leg locks turned out to be a bad idea I was excited to buy this tripod and take it on a trip, but within minutes of opening the box I realized it wasn't going to work. The twist locks on the legs are slow, and when opened up the sliding was sort of gritty and not smooth like I have experienced on other tripods. The twist lock also doesn't indicate whether or not the leg is properly locked, which could result in equipment damage or instability. Finally, the act of twisting is so time consuming, and immediately was hurting my wrist before I worked my way around the tripod to open it. The rest of the build looked fine, but I had to package the unit up and ship it back within minutes of opening it. Sort of sad, because I was pretty stoked for it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from For the money... Great value This unit is very well built. It's not the smallest or lightest, my aluminum one before this was substantially smaller and lighter, but it has a real feel of quality and long term usefulness. The legs are very smooth in the actuation with minimum twist needed on the legs twist controls. I read a review that mentioned scratchy, rough, legs and all I can think now is that person got a defective unit. Even the best units can have QA problems. The extra flexibility that the articulating center column is fantastic. Just be careful, read the instructions, and remember, for instance, to not let the weight of the camera and lens to hang out beyond the circumference of the legs. Sometimes the ability to pull the center post out to the point that you can start to articulate it get's a little sticky but I've never not been able to do it. There is a pin on the lower post you have to push to allow it to go up and it seems to get hung up a bit but my suggestion is to just pull a bit harder and it will move into position. Once in place you can 360 degree the center post around in a circle and the post can articulate up and down 180 degree. Very nice. I have a Manfrotto MHXPRO-BHQ2 XPRO Ball Head on it, also highly recommended, and with this ballhead the total height is 69 which should be good enough for almost everyone. Some may notice that I didn't match the weight support on my tripod and ballhead very well but having owned a number of these things I'm not worried about it at all. It's all very conservatively rated. Bottomline, highly recommended tripod and a very good value.
