    Vixen Optics 5863HEAD reviews

Porta II Head is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Does not attach to the standard 3/8-16 tripod bolt Despite the claim by Vixen, this head has no easy way to mount it on the standard 3/8-16 bolt found on most heavy duty or astronomical tripods. There is a 3/8 threaded hole that can be exposed by removing the bottom plate but it is off center! Why? No one would want to mount their telescope not centered on the tripod. There is an available accessory plate that can be purchased but it is threaded for a 1/4-20 bolt found on light wt tripods unacceptable for astronomy. Vixen missed a great opportunity to sell this otherwise acceptable light wt, inexpensive, slo-mo head to people who want to mount it on a sturdier tripod but they didn't engineer an easy way to do it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well I'm pleased with the actual operations of the Porta Head. Smooth and seems to operate well even when using up to the load limits of the Head. I agree though with another review I read where Vixen missed and opportunity to sell even more of these devises if they had an adapter for large camera tripods. I had to attach a camera panhead to the camera tripod to use as an adapter. Thus more weight and more cost.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well build Vixen product Does everything it is designed to do very well. I mounted the one I have on a tripod with a 3/8 thread bolt and it fit but I think the threaded hold is really 12mm. Did not force the thread it goes in a little over 1/4 and holds the head correctly. Like the adjustable tension and slow motion knobs. I ordered some short Vixen knobs to replace one of the long ones, just my preference.
