MXL FR-310 overview

  • 1Description

The FR-310 Hot Shoe Shotgun Microphone from MXL is a mono video microphone for mounting on a camcorder or DSLR via the hot shoe. As is typical of these types of microphones, sounds from the sides and rear are rejected in favor of sounds that are in front of the camera. The result is a more focused sound.

Three gain settings help adjust the level of sound capture whether from a close-up or long shot, while a bass roll-off switch cuts low-frequency noise. Additionally, the integrated windscreen helps block wind noise. The microphone functions using a single AAA battery.

    MXL FR-310 reviews

FR-310 Hot Shoe Shotgun Microphone is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better than onboard audio Bought this because it takes AAA batteries so that I can use rechargeable batteries, and not worry about buying 9V all the time. The audio quality is good. The build quality is Solid, it has a metal body. The disadvantage of the mic being built like a tank is that the camera handling noise travels to the mic due to the build quality. Ironically, if it were made from cheap, plastic parts it would not be as much of an issue. If the shoe mount was isolated from the mic housing, it would easily be a 5 star performer. This is solved easily enough by mounting the mic off camera (flash bracket, dslr rig etc...). The shoe is not threaded at the bottom, so you'd need an flash mount shoe adaptor to accomplish this. Using hte roll-off switch also helps with handling noise. The battery latch should have a clip, right now it just slips in place on the side and is held by tension. This sounds like a lot of negatives, but I would purchase the mic again. I'd simply hope the manufacturer takes customer feedback seriousely, and address some minor issues that would make it a Great mic.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Be carful it's fragile For the most part the FR-310 has solid construction with the exception of the point where the actual microphone attaches to the top of the unit. I put mine in a bag without a lot of protection and it snapped off. So keep it in the case it comes with when not using it. I'm using the FR-310 with a Cannon 60D and did a couple of tests using the FR-310 and some with the on-board microphone and there is a difference; I'm just not sure there was a big enough difference to justify the price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from MXL FR310 Purchased this microphone for canon 60d I am actually pretty impressed with this mike .First let me start out the build quality is pretty good all metal construction. Recording results are good, off axis recording is just ok it will pick up from the side and behind. This mike is very sensitive to handling noises when mounted on camera hotshoe . I think the switches are very tiny, it is easy to forget to turn mike off however it runs off a AAA battery and I accidentally left mine on a full day and and overnight and it still works . Wish they had put 1/4 inch threads in coldshoe but there are',t any.The price is great it has a small profile . Very light weight. About 5 inches long and a little shy of 2 1/2 inches high .The foam windscreen works ok outdoors the wind noise maybe a problem haven't tested too much outdoors. It has a low medium and high gain switch.ON /OFF and bass roll off switch as well. For the price I paid I like this microphone. The light blinks when you turn it on then stays off.The coiled cord can stretch about 24 inches.A nice touch is that it comes with a metal padded case for transport. It makes a pretty good interview microphone. No one has come out with a wind sock for it but it is pretty new .The MXL Folks are very helpful and will answer any questions you may have on their products.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from good mic.... I expected more. I used this mic for interviews conducted with my 60D. It works ok for that purpose but it is an extremely noisy mic and I would not recommend it for any precise recording. The build quality is good but the overall design is poor as there is no shock absorber; therefor the mic pics up every movement of the camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from works great, no fuss Worked great for me out of the box. Dropped it on the hot shoe, plugged it in to my 5D Mark II, and started taping. A definite improvement over the in-camera microphone for my application: taping kids' concerts. I was pleasantly surprised by the all-metal casing and generally robust design.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from it's OK use - public access television pro - good within 3 feet con - past 3 feet, sound isn't great sensitive towards high frequency noises - paper rustling, Windows yougotmail chime, doorbells off in the distance, etc

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well worth the money If you're depending on the in-camera mic, this is a much better solution. You don't get the servo noise from the lens, plus it's directional, so background noise is greatly reduced. Sound quality is excellent.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid build Much better than the internal mike, camera operations are not recorded. It does a very good job of reducing background noise. All metal, feels solid.
