Celestron CrossAim overview

  • 1Description

The Celestron CrossAim 12.5mm Illuminated Reticle Eyepiece is the perfect tool for accurate polar alignment of your telescope or for off-axis guiders during long-exposure astrophotography. The eyepiece is outfitted with a 1.25" barrel, with a 12.5mm focal length which produces a moderate magnification on most telescopes. A respectable 40° viewing angle and anti-reflection fully coated optics produce images that are bright and clear, with expansive views. A red double crosshair aiming reticle has an open center aiming square that won't obstruct small or faint objects, and is ideal for accurate initial polar alignment of the mount or to keep guide-stars perfectly centered during imaging sessions. Its LED illuminator runs on three included 1.5V alkaline button batteries, and is easy to use with a single control knob that turns it on and off with a rheostat that controls the reticle brightness to protect night-adjusted vision.

    Celestron CrossAim reviews

CrossAim 12.5mm Illuminated Reticle Eyepiece (1.25") is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Adequate But Not Exceptional I bought this for an astrophotography setup with my SkyWatcher 120 ED APO with an Orion 80mm short tube guide scope, to be placed on top of an Orion flip mirror which has an Atik Titan CCD in autoguider mode at its other opening. When I took the reticle out of the box and screwed in the LED light source, the light wouldn't come on. I had to fiddle with the batteries to finally make it work. It seems that the internal battery connectors were a bit flimsy. Once I got the light to come on, it seemed to work OK, but it worries me that I may have to fiddle with it every time I use it. It will work, for now, but I may consider getting another brand after giving it a try in actual conditions. I would recommend the product for the casual user but if you are serious about astrophotography, spend more money for a really good one. In some cases, you really DO get what you pay for.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Was very close to returning this product No instructions were included. The light blinked and then did not work at first. I first thought it was the batteries. Taking out the batteries, I found them very loose in the compartment. After many tries, I finally was able to load them back in so that the hot connection was made. I admit this may become a problem in the future. I did not realize there was a focus mechanism until I saw a youtube video. This was able to get the cross hairs more focused and usable. I am hopeful that this will solve my problem next time out, but not 100% sure. Would not recommend this product.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from This reticle is not quality equipment. Out of the box, and even though batteries were pre-installed, the reticle did not illuminate. I had to remove the batteries and reinstall them without the plastic case that surrounded the batteries in order to get the reticle to illuminate. Once illuminated, the cross hairs are very wide and blurry and I was unable to get them into clear focus even after adjusting the eyepiece lens. With this said and in spite of the quality issues, I was still able to center stars in the eyepiece enough to star align. I'll keep this reticle, but would not recommend or buy it again.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Cheaply made for price... It does what it says it does, but the quality of the materials is cheap. The plastic switch to turn on the illuminated reticle feels like it's going to stop working any day now, and I've only used it a few times. I expected more from Celestron, especially considering the hefty price tag. That said, it certainly has helped me with the alignment process, but I wish I had done more research and purchased a better reticle EP.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Update on Only Time Will Tell I bought this through B&H photo. Order number 610401500. The first time I used this eyepiece it actually fell apart! The switch was flimsy at best. It was shipped with batteries that were almost dead. After replacing the batteries it worked one night before the switch actually fell off. Poor Quality at best. I decided it was too much trouble to ship it back so I've taken the illuminator off and I shine a red flash light through the hole in the eyepiece to illuminate the crosshairs. I can't recommend this and it's a poor performance by Celestron.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from After two tries, it rates a 3 The first reticle eyepiece I received had the on/off knob broken off. B&H with their exceptional customer service replaced it immediately. (Thanks B&H!) However, the replacement they sent this time had a bent on/off knob. I suspect this one will break off eventually but so far it works fine. Another review had the same complaint and said they use their red flashlight and shine it in the hole to light up the cross hairs. If this one breaks I'll just do that. The problem is with the quality of the item and Celestron might need to redesign.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not the best construction. At first use the light was only intermittent. Found that the on/off switch was loose and an internal wire had come completely detached. After resoldering the wire and tightening the switch works fine. But, would recommend only buying in store with a testing before purchase!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simplifies Alignment This very basic device makes telescope alignment so much simpler and easier. It works as promised and, of course, the service from B&H was excellent, as usual.
