Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

Tamron's SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Nikon Cameras delivers a very useful range from 24mm true wide-angle to 70mm short telephoto, useful for landscapes, interiors, portraits, street photography and much more. The continuous maximum aperture of f/2.8 combined with built-in Vibration Compensation image stabilization make it possible to achieve stellar results in low-light situations, while the Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) gives you very quiet autofocus capabilities that are ideal for shooting video.

The 24-70mm lens uses specialized high-grade glass in the three LD elements, three Glass Molded Aspherical Lenses, one Hybrid Aspherical Lens and two XR (Extra Refractive Index) glasses, for excellent image quality. Using a rounded 9-blade diaphragm, the lens delivers fine bokeh--the out-of-focus area in a photo. Moisture-resistant construction helps protect the lens from any water that comes near it. And all of this is in a compact (3.5 x 4.6"), lightweight (29.1 oz) package that won't wear you out, even carrying it all day.

High-Speed Standard Zoom With Built-In VC (Vibration Compensation)

World's first full-size, high-speed standard zoom with built-in VC (Vibration Compensation). Even when shooting in low-light conditions with a slow shutter speed to render sharpness, Tamron's acclaimed VC allows for stable handheld camera work, to more fully enjoy the benefits of this high-speed zoom lens.
Uses specialized high-grade glass in the three LD elements, three Glass Molded Aspherical Lenses, one Hybrid Aspherical Lens and two XR (Extra Refractive Index) glasses, delivering top-of-the-class quality images suited to this high-grade lens. Using a rounded diaphragm, the lens achieves gorgeous blur effects.
Features USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) to power a speedy AF drive together with a continuous manual mechanism.
This high-speed standard zoom lens has a wide-end focal length of 24mm that expands the photographic area.
The lens adopts the new technology including the latest optical design, VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization and USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive), all in a lighter and more compact package.
Moisture-resistant construction helps prevent water from penetrating the lens.

VC (Vibration Compensation)

VC (Vibration Compensation) is Tamron's proprietary image stabilization system. Tamron's VC is a three-coil system, whereby three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens group electromagnetically via three steel balls. The VC lens elements are held in place only by contact with the steel balls, achieving smooth movement with little friction. This provides a stable viewfinder image with excellent tracking performance. And as the VC lens may be moved in parallel using only the motorized control, the mechanical structure has been simplified, enabling the creation of a more compact lens.

New VC System (Moving Coil Method)

Tamron's original VC image stabilization mechanism utilized a moving magnet system whereby a heavy magnet was positioned near the moving VC lens element. In the new VC unit the positions of the magnet and the coil are reversed, because of this the VC optical lens element is attached to the coil. The new VC mechanism employs a moving coil mechanism with a lightweight coil, and the lighter coil reduces the load on the drive system. Thus, the lighter, more compact new VC unit contributes to the lens's overall light weight and compact size. Because the 24-70 mm F/2.8 Di VC USD is a high-speed zoom lens with maximum aperture of F/2.8, its VC system must drive a lens that is larger and heavier than other zooms. Therefore, the shape, size and layout of the drive coils are all designed to obtain sufficient thrust. The result is a full-size, high-speed zoom that provides the same high level of compensation effect.

About the Ultrasonic Motor

In the ultrasonic motor, a piezoelectric element arranged in a ring formation generates ultrasonic vibrations in a metallic ring stator, and the vibration energy is used to rotate a metallic ring rotor that is attached to the stator. The rotation energy is in turn transferred from the metallic ring rotor to operate the focus lens.

    Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 reviews

SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Nikon Cameras is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 154.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Heartbreak to send it back I ordered this lens with high hopes; to use as my all-purpose walk around lens etc... I was blown away by the IQ, colors, contrast, and VC. Everything about this lens was perfect. Then I started checking out the bokeh in the shots I took in my garden and of kids standing in front of trees with dappled light... and my heart just sank! I had not read the reviews about the onion bokeh, but it is DEFINITELY there, and for me it was a problem - VERY distracting. I will watch what happens with this lens and will purchase again if this issue is corrected (or if the lens becomes significantly cheaper in the future). For now though, I will have to pass.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD I purchased this lens to go with my Nikon D750 and it is a great match. Fantastic image quality, sharp even wide open, VR works perfectly for video. Regarding the infamous 'onion bokeh' issue...well, it's there. It doesn't happen all the time, only in certain angles but its a bit disappointing especially for a lens of this caliber. Also the zoom ring is rather stiff so it's not very good for video. Those are the reasons why I don't give it 5 starts. Besides those issues the lens produces fantastic images, the range is great, AF is superb, great low light performance and the addition of VR in this focal range is amazing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good value for the money Received the Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8, took it out for a test shoot last week and am completely satisfied with the results. Operated smoothly, reasonably quick and quiet focus, sharp results. Details in the test shots were very sharp, no noticeable vignetting. Did a fair amount of research before investing in this lens and so far, so good. Will be taking this out for a more thorough test soon. Only drawback might be the weight, but was aware of this prior to purchasing. I own several Tamron lenses and have been very happy with all of them. The build, features and quality keeps getting better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens with all the best features! I mostly take photos of my two grandchildren, and this lens on a Nikon D750 is perfect. I originally purchased the Sigma 24-105 mm f4 from B&H; however, I decided that I would really like the faster f2.8 of the Tamron. I really liked the Sigma, but I used B&H excellent return policy to return it and get the faster lens. With the Tamron and VC, I can take sharp pictures hand held at 1/3 of a second or so at f2.8 - incredible! Hopefully, the lens will be reliable for many years, and with the Tamron 6-year warranty I am essentially guaranteed 6 years of good performance. This lens is a real winner!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Lens on D750 Ok, this lens is quickly becoming my walk around lens. It's nice that I can go a little wider than 50 or zoom in just a little, making it pretty versatile for me. Also I learned the hard way just how weather sealed it is after getting caught in a torrential downpour with no protection for either of us. This thing is sharp, fast - and substantial (but well-balanced on my D750). I've had a couple of issues with vignetting when shooting wide - turns out its my filters. Be sure to get thin profile filters!!! (Seems so obvious now... :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens I would buy again I am a serious enthusiast who used to a photojournalist in the film days. This lens is my all purpose walk around that I keep on my camera (Nikon 7100). I cover everything that comes up my way with this lens and it provides fast, sharp auto focus and really good zooming. The images are sharp and the color reproduction is excellent. Tamron has once again produced a product that is on par with any other glass out there - a friend shoots the Canon made version of this lens and my Tamron produces photos that look a touch better than his - we shot a high school basketball game side by side last weekend. Great value ... a well made, handsome lens that is proving to be a solid performer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from VC makes all the difference! Within two weeks this lens became my new favorite. At 24mm it's wide enough to cover my needs as a wedding and portrait photographer and 70mm is right on for head shots. It's the Vibration Compensation that makes this lens. Through the viewfinder you can actually see the lens locking on. I was able to shoot at 70mm 2.8 and at 1/30th of a second and still get tack sharp images. While I hear that the Canon and Nikon version has a slightly faster autofocus, I still find this lens incredibly fast. Faster than all my others. This lens will live on my D800 the majority of the time. The only con is the lens cap is a little hard to put on because there isn't much in the way of traction or grip for you to pinch - no biggie though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best option if not 100% cost insensitive This is not a perfect product, but it is an extremely good, solid, professional caliber lens at a vastly better price point than the Nikon counterpart. It feels the part of a professional lens on my D810 and in my hand. Zoom ring is smooth and easily manipulated. Autofocus is fast and virtually silent. Vibration control works unobtrusively and extremely effectively. If it has the onion bokeh that has been documented in numerous expert reviews, it surely hasn't bothered me yet. If I want bokeh nirvana, I'll use my Nikon 50mm f/1.4 or 85mm f/1.4. If you don't have completely unlimited funds to throw at a lens in this range (and even then, you'll still be dealing with imperfection), this is incredibly capable for the price point. Don't hesitate to purchase it.
