Sony 500mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

Full-frame A-mount photographers can Gain a whole new perspective on the world with the 500mm f/4 G SSM Lens from Sony. Enabling shooters to get much closer to even the most distant subject matter, this lens boasts a maximum aperture of f/4 to assist with working in dim light as well as with creating images with shallow depth of field. Ensuring high sharpness with minimal aberrations are three extra-low dispersion elements in the optical design, which works well with the Nano AR coating for contrasty, flare-free imagery. Guaranteeing that the images you capture are sharp is a Super Sonic wave AF Motor (SSM) that is fast and responsive for smooth, accurate tracking.

The dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel offers users a variety of physical buttons and switches for fast operation of the lens. This includes four focus hold buttons and an electronic focus range limiter switch for ensuring you always have the focus set exactly where you want. It also offers a rotating tripod collar for added stability when mounted to a tripod and comes with a slot-in circular polarizing filter.

Designed for the high demands of professional sports, wildlife, and action photography, this G series 500mm lens offers outstanding image quality that combines high-quality bokeh with high sharpness and faster, more responsive focusing. It is optimized for full-frame A-mount cameras, but it can be used on APS-C-format cameras where it has a 750mm equivalent focal length.
A maximum aperture of f/4 provides photographers with excellent light gathering capabilities as well as the ability to create images with shallow depth of field for selective focus techniques.
Three extra-low dispersion glass elements are featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
A Nano AR Coating has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
An SSM autofocus system with an enhanced algorithm and new LSI drive circuit provides quick, quiet, and precise focusing and much more responsive performance in tracking modes. The lens also features an internal focusing design that keeps the overall size constant and helps achieve a minimum focus distance of 13.1'.
An electronic focus range limiter switch allows you constrain the usable focus range between a set limited range or full for improving focus speed, and four focus hold buttons are also featured to manually stop the autofocus at a specified point.
Dust and weather-sealed construction benefits using the lens in inclement shooting conditions.
The lens is equipped with a removable and rotating tripod collar for added stability and reduced strain on the camera's lens mount.
The lens comes supplied with a drop-in 42mm circular polarizing filter to help reduce glare and produce more saturated imagery.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
This lens is compatible with Sony's 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, which can increase the effective focal length to 700mm and 1000mm, respectively.

    Sony 500mm f/4.0 reviews

    500mm f/4 G SSM Lens is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from WOW!! TACK SHARP!! BUY A GIMBAL!! If I could give it 6 stars, I would. This is one of those rare cases that you get more than what you pay for. Sharp as heck wide open at f4. So for action and sports photography, this lens excels. You will get over the price when you pop your memory card into your computer and check out color, resolution, saturation etc. You won't believe they can make a lens this good. Highly recommended if you got the jack. Also bought the 300mm f 2.8 and results are as good as the 500mm. Now you know why few go into sports photography. You have to get a second on your house. Now stop reading all the reviews and go buy one from B&H.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unique lens I have used this lens for about a month .I am still testing it.This is a very unique lens .The best image is at full open aperture . The image quality starts to drop at f8.The image still looks great even with a 2X converter lens at full open aperture at F8 at 50% crop .The image gets a little sharper at f10.The more I use this lens the more I like it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Fast Lens! I just got this great lens with the 1.4x Sony converter attached to my Sony A77ii. The lens is a lightwieght champ comparing it to Sony 70-400mm f4-5.6 G ii Lens Which i have. Focusing is really fast with the 1.4x! Without the 1.4x is much faster. The lens is sharp from f4! Im shooting birds only and details for me is important, the lens didnt disappoint me at all! Im loving it Price is hight comparing it to the new Canon 500mm f4 lens, but can the canon give you shatp images at f4! Nope! :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Lens I've ever had The package when it arrived, was a whole lot bigger than I expected. The lens contradicted my general assumption in many ways, such as the soft leather hood that goes for a lens cap, or the fact that the protective filter at the front end is part of the lens assembly itself. The sheer weight of the lens, and the amount of glass it contained surprised me. Then, as I attached my a77SLT camera to it and attempted to click a few shots - I got convinced of one fact - I've never had a long lens that is this sharp or this rich in colour saturation.Subsequently, I have taken it out on several birding trips around Vancouver, including a six or seven mile hikes. The camera is heavy, and it is not easy to quickly attach it to tripod. Neither is it easy to hand hold it for pictures. As a solution, I use a Manfrotto heavy tripod with a Gimball head and have the lens and camera attached to it all the time when I am out in the field. I carry the contraption over my shoulder, with the camera behind me and the three legs of the tripod ahead of me. The balance is good, but the weight can make your shoulder muscle sore after a while. A soft padding os some sort would be good.I can then lower the tripod on the ground in a few seconds and click off shots. The results are, relatively speaking, out of this world. The thing is, I never had a 500 mm prime lens. What I had before were Sigma zooms, and a Sony 70-400 zoom. All of them are good, but they simply cannot hold a candle to this lens. The autofocus is silent and instant. I played around with various autofocus settings of the camera, and in difficult situations, even manual focus. Each time, I was highly impressed by the lens. The Bekeh are out of this world.I have not had it for long, but it does appear solidly constructed. Externally its a beautiful looking lens, and often draws notes of admiration from passersby. What can I say, it is expensive and not for mere mortals, but I'd rather have this one than a an extra second hand car.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharper than I expected. Love IT This lens is so sharp and the focus is extremely fast. Believe it or not, sharper than my older Leica lenses at the same focal length. Great lens for sports and wildlife.
