Flolight FL-220AWD overview

  • 1Description

The Flolight FL-220AWD Fluorescent Video Light with Wireless Dimming (5400K Daylight) is a great choice for a studio fixture when high output, low running cost, and soft light are priorities. The FL-220AWD uses four 55W fluorescent lamps to give you an impressive 1000W hotlight equivalent. That's impressive enough, but it does it with minimal heat and a low power draw of only 193.5W. That means that you won't toast the talent while saving money both on kilowatt usage of the fixture and on AC costs that would have been needed when the hotlights you used turned your studio into a sauna. And with a lamp life of about 10,000 hours the FL-220AWD is practically maintenance free.

In situations where low light is required the built in 30-100% dimmer allows you to reduce power either on the unit's side panel or with the included wireless remote control. Beam control is provided by the built-in 4-way barndoors and the included diffusion cloth.

The fixture comes with 4 lamps and 2 yokes to offer you a choice of vertical or horizontal mounting, as well as a soft padded bag.

Fluorescents give naturally soft, even light. The included slide in diffuser provides an even softer light.
The FL-220AWD is perfect for studio or location work where power hungry incandescents can quickly overload available power. With just a fraction of the heat of incandescents you also avoid cooking your talent or constantly running air conditioning.
The FL-220AWD utilizes four 55W Biax lamps.

    Flolight FL-220AWD reviews

FL-220AWD Fluorescent Video Light with Wireless Dimming (5400K Daylight) is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Fluo Light for Price I used this light for lighting interviews, as well as a key light for some narrative work. The casing is metal, so I feel very comfortable when transporting the light. Sometimes the bulbs can be hard to get in and out (I switch from daylight to tungsten often), so I do it carefully as not to break any of the bulbs. I've used Kino Flo lights a lot, and I have to say that I was very impressed with this light. It isn't as nice as a Kino Flo, but it works very well if you can't afford one. The yoke can be annoying, as you have to change it out to go from vertical to horizontal. I do miss that about the Kinos.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great fixture for the money Key or fill, works for either. Very bright! Good color. The bulbs only light in pairs but the unit is dimming. The dimmer is nothing more than a remote servo, but it works good enough. The barn doors pack away over the bulbs and protect them. Very quiet when on too. I had one bulb broken during shipping. B&H is having some problems replacing it. I was told a new one would be shipped out a month ago...still have not seen it. I had to buy one just to use it at full brightness. Having to change the yoke to re-position is a pain, but nothing I can't live with.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Go-To I use this light for every interview that I shoot, and I use it on almost every film or commercial that I work on. If you take the time to tighten the bolts on the doors, this light is very versatile. It has a metal body, which makes traveling with the light easy and protects the bulbs while in transit. The idea of the 2 different yokes is great, however I find that I never have enough time to change them out, so I just leave it horizontal. Overall I am VERY pleased with the build quality of this light.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I use 8 of these on a standing set with consistent results I have owned the FL-220 for over 5 years now. I'm pleased with the quality of light and construction of the unit. I have never had issues with flickering like another review had suggested. Recently, I have ordered 7 additional FL-330 units for a standing set. They are dependable lights with good power output and flattering light. I do wish the motors were a little more quiet when using the remotes, but in my case, it doesn't really matter. The biggest issue I have with these is the way the diffusion panels mount on the barn-doors, it uses a very silly system that doesn't work well. These are minor issues and overall this is a solid product, I would buy it again.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not exactly what I was hoping for I purchased two of these to use for talking head style videos. The set I was currently using didn't give me a good enough output, which forced me to use a higher ISO. These did not give me any greater output, so I am stuck using the same ISO settings as I was before. Next time, I would have gone with a bigger unit. Also, the remote dimming was disappointing, It's noisy and it takes a while go fully dimmed. I find it's easier to dim them manually.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from slow flicker cause a lot of headaches Using these for the last 2 years, for fill light etc it is ok, but be aware of 4 problems, - the light intensity fluctuates over time, like about 2 min flicker cycle, if you will increase video speed in post process or doing timelapse it is very visible. This is a major headache - If you dim them they do flicker - If you do slow motion videos over 100fps, they do flicker - Sometimes you need to re-seat the bulbs, if they are hanging high, it is a problem.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good value for the price Highly portable and very high output lights. Best use is for lighting people; provides a soft, cool light for key and fill. Units are durable and the barn doors close flat to protect the bulbs. The remote is actually very useful, especially if you're having to sit in for talent while also lighting. I purchased a pair of these from B&H and they came with padded cases that are oversized to fit the yokes as well. Two of thse with padded cases, yokes and accessories fit nicely in a Pelican 1650 case. The downsides: The yokes are funky, you have to unscrew them from the pivot points to change from horizontal to vertical. You have to do some modifications if you want to hang these with a pipe hangar. The instruction sheet for enabling the dip switches for the remote is poorly written and not worth following. The diffusion attaches to the ends of the barn doors and it takes a bit of practice to get that right. Would have preferred larger diapers with draw strings for faster set up. Overall, these lights are a very good value and work as well as the higher end name brand versions.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice light, not the best quality I was excited to get this light and I put it together right when I got it. Worked good and I took some pictures with it, gives off a gear light. Then two of the bulbs just went out, after 5 mins of use. I think it's just too delicate.
