Sony DSC-HX10V Overview

  • 1Description

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX10V Digital Camera is an 18.2Mp point-and-shoot with a number of things going for it, not the least of which is GPS and Compass functionality. That means your images will be tagged with the exact location they were shot - and contain information on the exact direction in which they were shot! Whether you plan to use this data for geo-tagging, storage, albums, or for future re-shoots, it makes your digital life a whole lot easier, not to mention, interesting.

True to its genre, the HX10V has a number of auto modes packed in for seamless shooting, without the guesswork. The High Speed AF mode, for instance, improves on focus speed speeds over past models, even in low-light. This makes for effortless image capture day or night. Sixteen times optical zoom - and 32x Clear Image Zoom - come in handy for far-off subjects, while Optical image stabilization ensures blur-free photos, even when shooting handheld. Of course, modes like 3D Still Image and Background Defocus will come in handy too, providing you with functionality not normally seen on a point-and-shoot.

In addition to capturing high res still, the HX10V also captures 1080/60i video. Helping the camera to preserve memories of both varieties you'll find features like a built-in flash, a 3.0" Xtra Fine LCD, and a Sony G lens. And no matter which way you choose to shoot, the camera records to Memory Stick Duo cards, as well as SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards.

18.2Mp Exmor R CMOS Sensor
The 18.2MP Exmor R CMOS sensor captures ultra-high definition images that take full advantage of the camera's sharp Sony G lens. An advanced BIONZ processor rapidly analyzes the Extra-High Sensitivity data from the sensor, and activates By-Pixel Super Resolution technologies to reduce noise levels, resulting in stunning low light images with incredible details
High Speed AF
To improve focusing speed and sensitivity, the Exmor R CMOS sensor uses its rapid throughput to deliver high-quality image signals to the camera's BIONZ processor. The result is fast, DSLR-like focusing speeds, even in low light
Optical Zoom Plus Clear Image Zoom
Most digital zooms use electronic cropping to get closer to the subject, resulting in unsharp images. With Clear Image Zoom the powerful processor compares patterns found in adjacent pixels and creates new pixels to match selected patterns, resulting in more realistic, higher-quality images. Clear Image Zoom doubles optical zoom for closer photos
Full HD 1080/60i
Record crystal clear movies at the highest resolution available with capabilities for 60i in 1080 AVCHD video. This provides stunning, fast motion video with less distortion for playback on your HDTV. With dual record of stills and movies, you can shoot both at the same time
Capture the Decisive Moment with Up to 10 fps
Capture full 18.2 megapixel resolution images at up to 10 frames per second, helping to ensure that the decisive moment is captured such as the soccer ball flying into the goal. In addition, a mechanical shutter helps reduce distortion when continuously shooting moving subjects
Optical SteadyShot with Active Mode
Optical SteadyShot with Active Mode for blur-free movies even while walking. Camera-shake compensation using Optical SteadyShot/Active Mode has been improved with the addition of new electronic image stabilization. Now it's easier than ever to obtain sharp, blur-free movies even when zooming in unsteady situations, such as shooting with one hand while walking
3D Still Image and 3D Sweep Panorama Mode
Produce awe-inspiring images with 3D Still Image and 3D Sweep Panorama capabilities. Photos will take on a new dimension of creative capabilities for viewing the world in a whole new way
Picture Effect
Picture Effect adds a new level of expression to photos, making ordinary landscapes and portraits come to life by heightening mood and emphasizing certain attributes. Select camera models have up to nine different effects
Photo Creativity
Photo Creativity allows you to fine-tune your exposure settings, such as brightness, color, and vividness, and quickly choose the right enhancement for your subject. Now you can view Picture Effects and Photo Creativity effects in real time on the camera's monitor or in the viewfinder before shooting
Background Defocus
DSLR photographs are often beautiful because they blur the background, putting the emphasis on the subject. Now our point-and-shoot cameras can deliver this signature DSLR benefit. The system takes two shots, identifies the background and applies a defocused background keeping the subject crisp and clear
Superior Auto Mode
Get cleaner, more dynamic pictures and fewer missed shots. The camera automatically recognizes the correct scene mode, then quickly shoots and combines up to six shots to produce images with greater clarity, optimum dynamic range using Backlight Correction HDR technology and lower image noise using 6 shots layering technology. Superior Auto intelligently detects 33 scenes for still images and movies, making it easy to get the best shot
Face Detection Technology
Face Detection technology detects up to eight individual faces and adjusts focus, exposure, and white balance to help deliver crisp, properly lit images of family and friends
Smile Shutter Technology
Smile Shutter technology captures a smile the moment it happens. Simply press the Smile Shutter button and the camera does the rest. You can also select adult and child priority and indicate the degree of Smile Detection sensitivity. Intelligent Scene Recognition can be used together with Smile Shutter mode when the Intelligent Auto mode is on. This means that beautiful smiles can be captured with settings optimized for the particular scene, even in difficult conditions such as twilight and backlighting
GPS and Compass
GPS and compass record location data and camera direction as you shoot movies and photos.GPS Log lets users track a photographic journey and later view the path and images on a map. Map View in "Play Memories Home" software, allows users to view images on a map showing where they were taken. The logged path and images can also be displayed on Google Earth
Anti-Blink Function
It's frustrating to capture the perfect shot, only to review it later and discover subjects blinked during the photo. The Anti-blink function works to help counter blinking and squinting. When the camera is set to Soft Snap, the Anti-blink function captures two images, recording only the photo with less squinting. If a blink is detected in other shooting modes, a warning will be displayed after you take the shot
Soft Skin Mode
Portrait subjects will love the results. Soft Skin mode recognizes skin tones and reduces the appearance of blemishes and wrinkles without affecting the rest of the shot
Intelligent Scene Recognition Mode
Intelligent Scene Recognition (iSCN) Mode automatically detects 33 different types of scenes and selects the appropriate camera settings. iSCN has two modes: Auto and Advanced. In Auto Mode, the camera takes a single shot using the optimal settings. In Advanced Mode, the camera takes a photo with the optimal settings and, if in difficult lighting (low light or back light) immediately takes a second photo with another optimized setting so you can choose which to keep
Natural Flash
Conventional point-and-shoot camera flash shots just don't capture colors the way the eye sees them. Natural Flash controls the white balance of both the background and main subjects
Motion Detection
Motion Detection, along with Face Motion Detection adjusts ISO sensitivity and increases the shutter speed when movement is detected, reducing blur in moving subjects and faces
Sweep Multi Angle Mode
In Sweep Multi Angle mode, the camera takes 15 images at different angles as it sweeps across the scene. By tilting the camera during playback, the camera's Gyro Sensor detects motion and displays the image in a 3D-like view on the camera's LCD.

    Sony DSC-HX10V Reviews

Cyber-shot DSC-HX10V Digital Camera (Silver) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome little camera! I have been using this camera for everything from scenic panorama's to night exposures of the stars. It has super resolution for the price and has all kinds of awesome features! I really like the color filters, you can set it so that the whole picture is black and white except for anything that is green, or likewise with red, yellow, or blue. It may not be the fanciest camera feature on earth, but I thought it was way cool! The only drawback I can think of is the size. It's just a tad on the bulky side, although compared to some of the other camera's that are above 18 megapixels, this one's tiny.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Such an AMAZING Camera! I purchased this camera for my recent trip to Italy. The panoramic feature alone was well worth it. Full, sweeping views of the Colosseum and Forum in Rome, San Marco square in Venice. I could go on...they were amazing shots. The special settings for background lighting or low lighting work amazingly well. I was able to take pictures inside buildings that my old camera would never have taken. You have to purchase this camera! ;-)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Exceeded my expectations I wanted a compact, point and shoot camaera for my daughter to use. All my other cameras are Nikon but I came across this little Sony Cybershot DSC-HX10V. The spec's were right and the price was on the mark. It's fast to focus and provides crisp, clear shots. The full HD video is a bonus. It is also easy to use. A great addition to our fleet!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The GPS features are the best ever This review is ONLY about the GPS related features. For my internet travel guide team I bought 11 GPS cameras since 2010, starting with two Sony HX5V and the Samsung ST1000. In everyday practical use the GPS features of the HX5V are reliable and superior to all other brands. Then we bought the HX7V that is not better than the HX5V GPS-wise. Two months ago I finally found the HX9V which is a fantastic camera for our purposes, fast GPS, correct within 5 meters. Then last week I got the HX10V -- unbelievable improvement over the HX9V: immediate GPS availability when exiting the car and switching on, accurate within TWO meters (!!), PLUS continuous GPS logging of the position every 15 to 20 seconds for 24 hours even when the camera is switched off, mostly accurate within 20 meters when driving a car, looks perfect on a level 9 or level 10 Google map PLUS can take around 100 pictures with one battery PLUS can replace the battery on the fly without disturbing the logging. The Sony HX10V is my new miracle camera. I am going to buy 5 more for my staff and will give the Olympus TG-810 (very slow GPS), the Samsung ST1000 (nobody likes the touchscreen, very slow GPS), the Panasonic TZ10 (erratic GPS under trees, very short battery life), the Nikon AW100 (fogging of the lens) and the Canon S100 (fair GPS, erratic logger) away. All of them produce good pictures and/or videos, but for professional use of the GPS they need a lot of re-positioning work afterwords on the computer. It is amazing that within two years the Sony team was able to design and produce a perfect GPS camera for professional use. For special use the HX30V may come in handy for immediate upload to the server by Wi-Fi. The only GPS improvement on my wish list: the GPS location should NOT give the position of the camera but the position of the motif which could easily be calculated from the distance of the motif and the shooting direction of the camera. Maybe one of the geniuses from the Sony team reads these lines.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A very nice camera with smart features. I like this camera very much. The pictures are of a good quality and the camera is easy to handle. The only thing I have to get used to is the flash popping up on the corner, I tend to hold the camera at this point.
