I purchased this tripod for traveling abroad. I like how light it is and how strong it is! I did remove the head and added another.

Legs Don't Maintain Tension

I have own this tripod for over a year and a half, and now I am experiencing great difficulty maintaining any tension in the legs. If I tighten the screws to the point where the legs are "stiff" and not flopping around, then the levers that control the different angles are inoperable. I have been in contact with the company, and they are very quick to respond with what needs to be done to remedy the problem. I follow their instructions to the "T" ( I downloaded the PDF files from the site as well), but I am not getting the results that I desire. Before this problem arose, I was extremely satisfied with this tripod.

Traveling Solidly With Carbon Fiber

This was purchased 1st quarter 2014. The tripod is a solid mainstay in my camera arsenal. It's larger than most when folded--measured 2' from top of plate to bottom, but can handle with ease a DSLR with a Tokina wide angle lens, or a Tamron 300mm telephoto in addition to an "L" bracket. It has been angled various degrees for those "tight & challenging" spots to "get that shot" and has held up graciously. The only two suggestions: an improved and more precise manual, and second, this may just be me unknowing or my particular copy, but even when screwed tightly with an L-shaped Hexagon Head Ball screwdriver, the plate still "wiggles" a little. Outside of that, I would definitely recommend investing in this tripod.

Love it now that I found fix for an issue

I researched adding a travel tripod for a vacation flight - this Feisol won! My criteria was light weight (only 3.1lb) , minimal size to pack in an airline carry on as well as ease of handling for outdoor excursions, durable quality & versatility for all-purpose use. Though I was skeptical of a brand with which I was unfamiliar, it made a good first impression: solid feel - smooth operation, extremely minimal weight... my only concern was that the ball head was overly stiff (with no instructions). After struggling with that throughout our vacation, I was ready to return it. I decided to take a closer look at reviews here on B&H to see if anyone else complained of this same issue and found this clue... "the friction control only works when the head is LOCKED." I adjusted the separate tension knob while alternating between "release" and "unlock" positions of the ball head lock quite awhile. Finally, it released and could be easily rotated with a reasonable positioning of the tension screw. Wish these simple instructions had been included upfront. But now I LOVE this tripod/ combo. It perfectly fits my requirements, supports a 70-200mm without issue, and it will be taking over for my aluminum Manfrotto as my general purpose tripod. Well worth its price.

Awesome travel tripod

This tripod is excellent! I bought this for travel but was half-way considering saving up for a Gitzo. I'm so glad I went with this tripod. When the box arrived I actually thought that perhaps they had sent the wrong item because it was so incredibly light. It fits well on my backpack and I barely even know it's there. Another reason I'm glad I went with this tripod is the load rating -- 44 lbs! That's enough to hold my 5dm4 and a 70-200 f/2.8. Overall, this is a fantastic tripod and at half the cost of the Gitzos it feels just as high quality. I highly recommend this.

Travel Tripod - Feisol or Gitzo?

By Russ

I recently purchased the Feisol travel tripod after doing some research and evaluation of both the Gitzo and the Feisol travel tripods. I ended up purchasing the Feisol and I believe I made the best decision. Here are the reasons for my decisions: 1) the Feisol is about 1/2 the price of the Gitzo (although price was not the main reason), 2) I felt that the standard ball head on the Gitzo would have to be upgraded as it does NOT come with a tension control; Gitzo does have a ball head for this tripod with a tension control but it is not standard (the standard ball head on the Feisol does have a tension control), 3) the Feisol travel tripod is rated to handle more weight and I found it to be a bit sturdier than the Gitzo (when comparing side by side) while its weight is about the same, 4) finally, the Feisol provides a bit more height than the Gitzo. Overall, for me, the Feisol is the superior product although the Gitzo tripod is a quality product.

Center columns

No matter how tighten center columns are - theyll rotate when you try to on-screw head or anything on top of tripod. There is no any locking preventing center columns from rotating clock- or counterclockwise when you screw or unscrew head from tripod. I tried to hold the column with my arm - but this doesnt work well because column is rather slippery. Leg elements also rotating but that doesnt matter as much as for center columns. This is clear gap in design. Id mark:  - tripod size: 4 stars (too fat when closed) - tripod weight: 5 stars (as light as small Gitzo 1555)

Follow Up On My First Review

I would like to say, that Michael at Feisol is top notch. They are fixing my tripod at no cost, and found the problem to be user inflicted (which I plead guilty to). I recommend them and their products w/o reservation!

question

Are there other ball heads that work well with this tripod? Will a pistol grip ball head work? I have used a Manfrotto pistol (early model) but it is too heavy. Thanks
Asked by: Anonymous
You can use any ball head, including pistol grip heads with this tripod so long as it has a 3/8 -16 fitting.

question

How are the legs set up. They seem to just spread without any lock and you have to fiddle in and out until they look level. Feisol site says nothing except the legs are suppose to lock at defined angle spreads. What am I missing?
Asked by: Anonymous
The legs do have locks. At the hinge of each leg are tabs that you pull out to unlock and push in to lock the position.

question

Can this tripod support a 300mm f2.8 lens?
Asked by: Agni D.
I guess it depends on the weight of your 300 f2.8 and the weight of your camera. I have used a nikon 200-500 zoom and this weighs 2.3kg + my camera weighs 2.3kg and works fine.

question

Can central portion be removed completely and ball-head attached to the top of the tripod? In other words, what is minimum height?
Asked by: Alexei
this travel tripod can only be operated with a Center Column. However, an optional Short Column CC-2807 is available which brings the Minimum Height down to just under 8 .
