FEISOL CM-1401 Reviews

Tall, Light Weight but Sturdy

Years ago I purchased an aluminum Gitzo Safari monopod, which is unique in that the largest diameter section is at the bottom. This results in a broader foot that prevents it from sinking into soft ground and keeps dirt from entering between the sections above while being closed. However it's a bit heavy and lacks the anti-rotation locking feature of more modern tripods and monopods, so I decided to make my own version out of carbon fiber, with a priority on light weight. I already have a Feisol tripod and was impressed with its sturdiness and load capacity for being so light weight, for which reason I chose this Feisol CM-1401 for my project. It's very light, stiffer than expected for its slimness and more than long enough (I'm 6 ft.) with positive locks that prevent any slippage. It's more than adequate for my Fujifilm XPro3 and adapted Leica / Voigtlander lenses and almost certainly for other heavier applications. The table is plastic and is held in place only by the 3/8 inch screw, so removal was easy. For the rubber foot I used a Gitzo D108623 (available at B&H), which required a 1/4 to 3/8 inch adapter; the diameter and fit were perfect. Then I shimmied the foam grip to the other end of the fat section. A Leofoto VH-10S tilting head was selected; it's slightly smaller and lighter than my RRS monopod head but works just as well. The cap was removed from the end of the smallest section (normally the bottom), which revealed an interior metric thread pattern (for a spike); fortunately it's very close to std. 3/8 inch and with the same 1.25 thread pitch. A short section of 3/8 inch threaded brass rod was purchased (from Amazon), cut to an appropriate length, screwed into the Leofoto head and then into the end of the monopod; it's solid. In the interest of lightness and convenience, I replaced the Leofoto screw clamp with a lighter weight lever clamp from Sunway Photo, which grips Arca Swiss plates securely. Project complete. In addition to the advantages mentioned above, I think opening/extending the monopod is easier; unscrew all the locks while gripping the foam- covered section, flip it over and the weight of the head-clamp end extends the sections with authority. Closure is easier too for the same reason. If full extension is not needed, the lock closest to hand is for the thinnest section, leaving the longer and stiffer sections remaining fully extended. I know this was long reading and perhaps not of interest to some (many?), but I've found this upside-down configuration so logical I don't see why it hasn't been adopted by another manufacturer; not even Gitzo has resurrected the concept.

My second Feisol Monopod

I initially purchased a Feisol CM-1471 and just puchased the CM-1401 model. The CM-1471 was over kill for the still work I do and the CM-1401 was more compact and doubles as a trekking pole for day hikes. I plan to keep the CM-1471 for video work and use the CM-1401 for stills. The build quality and use of materials in both units is excellent.  I also own several Feisol tripods. Both the monopods and tripods have proven to be very durable, easy to use, and easy to clean. I live on the coast and often shoot in fresh and salt water marshes when tripod/monopod disassemby is necessary for remove sand and silt. I switched from using Gitzo products to Feisol products about nine years ago and have been shooting still and motion for close to fifty years. I believe tha most of my Feisol purchases were made at B&H Photo and are verifiable.
