Samson Carbon 49 Overview

The Samson Carbon 49 is a 49-key, USB/MIDI keyboard controller that offers versatility, portability, and value. Its semi-weighted keys are velocity sensitive, and its Transpose and Octave buttons make it possible to quickly change settings in live-performance situations. Visual feedback is provided via a 3 x 7-segment LED display.

The Carbon 49 is exclusively bus powered, either from your computer's USB port, or from an Apple iPad equipped with Apple's iPad Camera Connection Kit (not included). The keyboard features a dedicated iPad slot on its top panel.

You can connect to external MIDI instruments and interfaces using the MIDI Out jack, and plug in a sustain or expression pedal through the rear-panel 1/4" input. The Volume Fader and Data Knob are both assignable to any MIDI Continous Controller, and you also get a pitch bend wheel and an assignable modulation wheel. The Carbon 49 is bundled with Native Instruments Komplete Elements software (Windows and Mac), which gives you over 3GB of samples, synths, drum machines, and more.

Perfect MIDI Controller for my Home Studio

I got the Carbon 49 because it had an 8 pin MIDI out. Many controllers today are UBS only, and that won't work with all of my devices. I was a little concerned about UBS only power, but that works beautifully. The keyboard itself is elegantly simple. Easily accessible and intuitive controls let me access the parameters that I need (octave range, volume, pitch bend, modulation). I rarely need real-time controls, so not having a bunch of superfluous buttons makes this a simple unit to use. Keys are solid and responsive, the whole unit seems sturdy and durable, given it will get fairly light use and won't be transported often, if ever. Definitely a great value for the price, and given my rather minimal needs, this unit seems tailor-made for me.

The Carbon 49 is compatible with most iPad apps that support MIDI controllers. These can be downloaded from Apple's App Store.

Is there lag when playing using iPad? Also are there built in speakers or it only works when plugged into iPad or laptop?

There are no speakers. Use the iPad speakers. Or connect headphones or speakers to the iPad.
