  • 1Description

The Macro LED Ring Flash for Nikon is a ring light that can be attached to a Nikon hot shoe and macro lenses with filter threads between 52mm and 77mm (7 adapters are included for mounting the light to a lens). A ring light provides virtually shadowless lighting--ideal for macro photography like medical, dental, industrial and creative applications where the situation demands close-up, detailed, well-lit images. The power pack attaches to the camera hot shoe to synchronize the light. This ring light has 32 LEDs--you can choose to use 16 or 32 LEDS for control over exposure. This light can also operate as a continuous light instead of a flash, for shooting video. The power pack operates on 4x AA batteries. Batteries are not included.

    Polaroid PLMRFN reviews

Macro LED Ring Flash for Nikon is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 80.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Ring Flash!! For an inexpensive flash, this unit works great!! Because it does not have TTL, it took me a little while to figure out the correct way to use it. By simply doing some test shots with whatever camera settings you want, then making adjustments with exposure compensation, it works perfect!! You need to be close to your subject, as this is not a super powerful light, but with macro it's perfect!! I am so pleased with this flash, I am now loving macro photography!!! So fun to use and see my subject light up right through the viewfinder. I used it for a couple hundred shots yesterday and the batteries never quit. Love it!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product LED ring light, less expensive and more versatile than a traditional ring flash. Can be used in both flash and continuous mode. Brightness can be adjusted in 7 settings. Also you can turn on the left and right sides individually. This is LED based, not flash tube, so there is no recycle delay - you don't need to wait for the flash to charge. As long as the batteries have power, the flash is always ready to go.Although it says for Nikon this is in no way a dedicated flash. All versions of this item are identical, it only uses the hotshoe to trigger. There is no TTL data exchanged with the camera. My only complain is that it could be a little brighter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Poloroid Ring Light Keep it in perspective. This is a $ solution to an issue you could easily spend $1000 resolving.I use it with my Nikkor 105 Micro. Its ability to light the subject for auto-focus is alone worth the price. For most applications, you can use it with the light on constant, in P mode.If you wish to use the 'half ring' loghting feature, then you'll need to use flash mode, and everything is done manualy.Even though the ring lights are labelled as left and right, the ring rotates freely on the adapter, so they can also be top or bottom, or anything in between. Compact enough to fit in most gadget bags. Before you spend $100's on a speed flash solution, take a good look at this device. It's worth the risk to try it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from not true automatic This is a good value but has some limitations. It is not truely automatic as claimed. You must use manual or shutter priority to control the exposure, at least with the D800. The ring blocks the AF assist light so autofocus is difficult at night. In ringlight mode autofocus is fine. The main thing is you must check your exposures because there is no true autoexposure, only auto in the sense of flash sync. With careful experimentation you can get great results. I would give this product one more star if they had not lied in the description about automatic. For the money it is a great value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great For Macro I love shooting macro and needed a good flash or constant light source. I had my eyes on something that was over 10 times the cost of the Polaroid LED Ring Flash so for the price I just had to try this one. The Polaroid does both, flash & constant light & in flash it will iluminate the left or right half of the ring. You can also dim or brighten the LED's. All this and a low price too! I use it on two Nikons (D200 & D800) and it works great on both. For auto flash you need enough ambient light for the camera to focus as the ring is so large that it covers the auto focus lamp on the front of the camera. This would be a problem with any brand I'm sure. I wasn't expecting much for the low price but I'm very happy with it & it fits every lens I own using the 7 included adapters. Definitely glad I bought it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from not much power I bought this thinking that it might help with the shadows for macro. However it is not strong enough. If you don't have any other macro lights I suggest buying two led lights at b&h for the same price of this light. However I am keeping it because i don't want to spend more on ring flash right now since I have leds. So i am only keeping this as a toy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Macro LED Ring Flash for Nikon by Polaro It's a great addition to macro photography, giving at all different strengths. The ability to se either half of the light circle is also an advantage, The only down side is that it is not strong enough for portrait photography. I highly recommend it for macro work.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't Waste Your Time or Money As a photographer who does a lot of macro work, I can say with certainty (unless I was sent a defective unit) that this ring flash is little more than a toy, and not a good toy at that. The instructions rate this flash as suitable for working distances of 2-60 at 1/100th sec, without mentioning an ISO or aperture. Here's the reality: At FULL power (tested under low ambient light so that the flash performance could be accurately assessed), it delivers an acceptable exposure with the subject 4 (that's right, 4 inches!) from the flash at f/8, ISO 320, at 1/100sec. Positioned 2.5 from the subject, the flash delivers an acceptable exposure at f/11, still not providing enough depth-of-field for most macro work. The design looks good, but the LEDs are far too weak for the job. And yes, all four batteries that I installed were new. So don't be fooled by the name Polaroid -- this is a flash with no flash-power. For $, I wasn't expecting a flash that would be useful at distances greater than 12. But this unit is so far off the mark, I consider it useless, even for fill-flash. It's going back to B&H next week.
