Bolt VX-710 overview

  • 1Description

The VX-710N TTL Flash for Nikon from Bolt is a dedicated flash for use with Nikon DSLR or point-and-shoot cameras. The VX-710N features a guide number of 164' at ISO 100 and an adjustable tilt head with six positions: -7 to 90°. The -7° downward tilt allows you to fully illuminate your subject when shooting close-up. You can also twist it to the left up to 90° and to the right up to 180°. It covers a 24-180mm range (in 35mm full frame format) and extends to 18-180mm with the diffuser panel in place. In auto mode the zoom range is stepless, it does not set at 24mm, 35mm, etc, but matches the exact focal length of the zoom lens for optimal lighting. The flash supports rear curtain synchronization for shooting at slower shutter speeds. The VX-710N is equipped with wireless (optical) manual slave function.

The VX-710N has an autofocus assist for low-light photography, and an automatic power-saving function that turns the flash off when it's inactive. It is powered by four AA batteries (not included), with a flash duration between 1/800 and 1/20,000 of a second. A convenient HV port allows you to connect the flash to an external power source, such as the Bolt Cyclone, for extended usage and faster recycling. The included stand allows you to set the flash up on a flat surface or to attach it to a tripod head, light stand, or clamp that has a standard 1/4"-20 mount.

This on-camera flash is fully compatible with Nikon i-TTL.
The guide number for this flash is 164' (50 m) at 50mm and ISO 100.
The adjustable six-position flash head can be tilted up -7-90°, left 0-90° and right 0-180°. It has an automatic and manual 24-180mm zoom head. The -7° downward tilt allows you to fully illuminate your subject when shooting close-up.
FV Lock, Red-eye Reduction and Flash Exposure Bracketing are supported if your specific Nikon camera has those functions.
The VX-710N is equipped with a wireless (optical) manual slave function, allowing you to fire the flash remotely. Using the optical slave feature, the VX-710N can be set to fire whenever it detects a signal from the master flash. This works optically - when one flash unit "sees" another flash firing, it will instantaneously fire along with it.
The 2.0" rear backlit LCD Display allows you to easily make adjustments in low light and clearly see what your flash is set to for accurate readings.
With eight different manual power levels you can easily change from full to 1/128 power and fine tune your levels in increments of 1/3.
With a built-in autofocus-assist beam you can shoot in low-light conditions, using the beam to aid your camera's AF modes.
A PC sync terminal and included 12" cable allows you to easily shoot with the VX-710N off of the camera for increased versatility.
An HV port on the side of the flash allows you to connect the VX-710N to an external power source, such as the Bolt Cyclone, for extended use and faster recycling time. The HV port utilizes a Canon CZ-type connection.
This flash supports rear-curtain sync.
A built-in reflector allows you to enhance the light coming from your flash and the diffuser panel, which extends the flash range to wide-angle 18mm, also softens the light for more flattering shadows and images.
Lock mode prevents inadvertent operation of the flash unit and overheating protection mode offers warnings when the flash is operating continuously with a chance of overheating and will temporarily disable the flash if temperatures are too high.
The automatic power-saving function turns the flash off to conserve power, allowing you to shoot longer.

    Bolt VX-710 reviews

VX-710N TTL Flash for Nikon Cameras is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 31.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Flash for the Price I purchased this flash to use at a company sales meeting. I used it both inside and out. The tilting head and adjustable intensity are good features. The only thing I didn't like about the flash was that it beeped. When it is powered on and when changing the focal length it made a beeping noise. This is an annoying feature when in a conference type setting. It is a bit of a battery hog, so I would recommend an external battery pack or at the very least, an extra set of batteries. Overall it is a good flash for the money and I would recommend it to other users.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'm a Happy Flasher Powerful, easy to use. I shoot manual mode and the buttons and menus are super quick and simple to use. Surprisingly the built in diffuser is pretty good! I prefer it over the optional snap on diffuser made for it by Bolt. No need to pay twice the price for a flash to have the Brand name on the front, this will cover whatever you need. I've had it for about 6 months now and I've used it in many settings and it does great. Battery life is excellent. I've used the slave feature on a couple of occasions and it fired every time. The little stand that comes with it mounts easily to a spare tripod or threaded light stand so you can use the flash as an off board flash as well. I don't shoot in auto mode but I assume it would perform just fine. It's everything I need and expect from a camera mounted flash.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful flash I give the Bolt VX-710n flash 5 stars as it is a great value for the money - One typically pays big dollars for a guide number of 164 at iso 100 but not so with the Bolt. The other thing that really impresses me with the Bolt is the buttons and menu system. The On and OFF button is super easy and nice - then as I mostly shoot in manual mode - it is just a quick one touch to go up or down in flash strength. I have several other flashes and buttons tiny and to go up is easy but say I wanted to go to 1/4 from 1/8 th - I have to go a full circle as it only increases and then starts over - My Canon 430 has buttons that are so resessed that it is so hard to press them - The button son the Bolt VX-710N are super easy to use - I am very impressed with the power output - So for the money I think this is one of the most powerful flashes in that size and TTL and has nice menu system and easty to control buttons. One thing I noticed is that the flash head is a bit larger than say the Canon 430 or 580 or Nikon SB flashes but just a bit - I say this as some accessories might not fit - my most valuable addon to my flashes is the Gary Fong Lightsphere and it is a bit tight on but does fit which is awesome as I always have those on unless I am using a snoot. I understand Bolt is a B&H brand so a great company behind this product even though it is made in China - As I shoot mostly in Manual mode and with wireless triggers I do not see the need to go with the great Nikon SB910 or some of the other more expensive flashes - they are good flashes - but if one is using these outside alot and needs quite a few or might drop one every now and then and yes still needs a powerful flash then this is a great value for the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AWESOME FLASH!!! Better than Nikon, in my opinion... We got a pair of these to supplement our Nikon SB700 for a wedding and were not really sure how they would work out... Now that we've gotten to use the Bolt flashes, we are getting rid of the Nikon. These are that good! These things are bright, super easy to use (we're talking one button to change the power... No menus to work through), lightweight, durable, etc. They are pretty big, but that goes with the territory for any high-powered flash. All of our future flashes will be Bolts. We love them! The ONLY thing I don't love is that these have a threaded connection to mount them on the hot-shoe, as opposed the the lever that Nikon uses. Not a big deal, but it makes it a little slow to swap out--though it definitely feels really secure when it's mounted and tightened on.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Specs look good, like online dating I wanted a cheaper alternative to the nikon version which is the sb910. So i said, what the heck, lets try it. By the way, I was going to use this for wedding photography. So I received the flash from UPS, opened the box like a kid on christmas and started to play with my new toy. The flash is cool, it is powerful, but it feels really cheap. nothing like the nikon or canon brnads. It feels like it might bust. Light output i felt was inconsistent and had a center hot spot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great item I definitely appreciated the advise given to me by the B&H representative. I came to the store with two different flash that I thought would be good to use with my Nikon. However, when I explained the situations in which the flash would be used, the rep told me of a different flash that would be more appropriate for my needs & within my budget. I love it & am so appreciative of being directed to the right item.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent but longer recycle time You get what you pay for. Decent but lacks all the tools of Nikon flashes. I shoot wedding so I need quicker recycle times.
