Hoya 72mm UV and IR Cut Filter
Key Features
  • Cuts Out UV Rays Below 390 nm
  • Cuts Out IR Rays Above 700 nm
  • Retains Visible Light Spectrum
  • Reduce Effects of Atmospheric Haze
The 72 mm UV and IR Cut Filter from Hoya is a lens filter that, when attached to your lens, permits only the visible spectrum of light rays to enter the camera and get captured by the sensor. It blocks out both the higher frequency ultraviolet rays, and lower frequency infrared light rays. This is important to digital photographers because the CCD and CMOS sensors found in our cameras are extremely susceptible to catching UV and IR rays just outside the visible spectrum that have a very negative impact on image quality.

Hoya A-72UVIR Overview

The 72 mm UV and IR Cut Filter from Hoya is a lens filter that, when attached to your lens, permits only the visible spectrum of light rays to enter the camera and get captured by the sensor. It blocks out both the higher frequency ultraviolet rays, and lower frequency infrared light rays. This is important to digital photographers because the CCD and CMOS sensors found in our cameras are extremely susceptible to catching UV and IR rays just outside the visible spectrum that have a very negative impact on image quality.

The filter offers even greater versatility than is already found in a combination UV-IR filter due to its front and rear threads. They permit stackable standard-size filters to be attached, giving you even more filter effect options, while also accommodating a standard lens cap as well.

Another benefit to using the UV-IR filter is that it can also reduce the effects of atmospheric haze to a greater degree than would be found with a standard UV filter. This means that sharper images with more depth and finer, richer color gradations are possible when utilizing the filter's effects in your photography. This combination filter is a very convenient option for those who seek a clearer and sharper image when captured outdoors, while getting the benefits of two filters in one.

More so than a traditional UV filter, this combination filter cuts through atmospheric haze to a greater degree than you would otherwise find
When using color CCD or CMOS camera sensors, which are extremely susceptible to UV and IR rays, this combination filter can produce greater accuracy of color in digital images than is found with traditional IR filters
Cut to transmit only those light rays that fall within the visible spectrum of light, this UV-IR filter blocks both ultraviolet rays found below 390 nm, as well as infrared rays above 700 nm
Low-profile, rigid aluminum filter ring provides support and is compatible with stackable standard filters for a greater combination of effects

I love it because it now it converted our full spectrum camera to a useable interview B camera as well allowing us to use it outside! Just have to use it with manual white balance due to a red hue color. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to make their full spectrum camera useable outside.

The best thing for color.

For many years, I have had to tweak my color in post. The original bmpcc trends to the reds a little too much. The it/cut filter has given me back my color without having the color baked in. I am extraordinarily happy with my investment and I would suggest that anyone use this tool if they care about their color.

Is this filter enough for taking photographs to a solar eclipse without damaging the camera?
Asked by: Ignacio
No, you need a specialized solar filter. This is far from strong enough to aim at the sun for extended periods of time.

Does this sit furthest from the camera or closest to the camera when pairing with a Variable ND filter?

It really doesn't matter but typically a UV filter goes on the lens first.

question

Does ir cut only serve to reduce red from sunlight or is this also necessary in artifificial light like LED?
Asked by: Jim
LED white lights typically remove unused spectrums to save on power so the difference under artificial light should be minimal. The largest gains will be under sunlight and UV/IR specific lighting. Unless the camera is full spectrum modified you will likely see very little difference under any light but almost none under modern artificial lighting. I would not buy an IR cut filter unless the camera is full spectrum modified as your camera already has one built in and UV filters are much less expensive. HTH.
