The Blackmagic-Design Teranex 2D Processor is an advanced-quality standards converter as well as video format converter and capture and playback device all-in-one. As a standards converter, it can convert from most any television format to any other television format in the highest quality. Conversions are indistinguishable from the original master. And as for capture/playback functionality, the Teranex can simultaneously convert formats and -- via Thunderbolt -- capture files into a computer for editing.

What makes Teranex so good is an advanced SIMD technology--developed and patented by Teranex--that allows instant calculations on thousands of pixels simultaneously in X, Y positions and between video frames. Processing is applied within the frame and between frames all at the same time, delivering better de-interlacing, inter-frame interpolation and noise reduction.

Overall, the processor features extremely high-quality de-interlacing, up and down conversion, SD and HD cross conversion, SD and HD standards conversion, automatic cadence detection and removal (even with edited content), noise reduction, adjustable scaling, aspect ratio conversion, and timecode conversion; and accompanying all the video conversion functionality is 16 channel audio conversion capacity.

Standards conversions can actually also be employed for reasons other than the general need to convert. Conversions can be performed simply to protect equipment such as decks, switchers, transmitters and encoders from standards they don't support. And as far as non-general uses go, the Teranex can additionally be used to synchronize and convert video feeds.

A bunch of software comes included. Two of them are Media Express and UltraScope. UltraScope lets you measure your video signal levels with a Thunderbolt-connected computer, displaying 6 simultaneous live scopes on a single screen. The addition of these two applications to your NLE give you a complete editing toolset to complement an all-in-one conversion/capture device.

High Quality De-Interlace
Teranex quality starts with one of the world's highest quality and most precise de-interlacers. Teranex features proprietary and patented PixelMotion de-interlacing algorithms so you get improved image quality by maintaining vertical resolution.
Up Conversion
When converting from NTSC or PAL SD up to 720HD or 1080HD, Teranex is perfect because it features a wide range of aspect ratio options and multi-direction diagonal filters so "jaggies" are eliminated and you get clean HD looking images.
Down Conversion
Teranex down conversion allows amazing SD feeds from your HD sources. 1080HD and 720HD video sources, combined with the de-interlace, and multi-direction diagonal filters, give you great SD images with a range of aspect choices.
SD/HD Cross Conversion
Often work is completed in the native film frame rate of 23.98 or 24 fps and then broadcast in 25 or 29.97 fps. Teranex converts between frame rates such as these, adding and removing cadence as required. Move between video and film worlds with ease.
SD/HD Standards Conversion
Linear standards conversion is easy with the powerful SIMD processor which can analyze and calculate pixels between frames as easily as anywhere in the frame.
Cadence Detect and Remove
Teranex is unique because it can automatically remove cadence (3:2 pulldown) from video when converting 24 fps, even when the footage has been previously edited and suffers from flash fields. That's perfect for mastering clean online content.
Noise Reduction
Remove unwanted noise from transmission links, videotape, or even camera sources. Teranex includes award winning temporal recursive noise reduction. Reducing noise allows more efficient video compression when authoring content.
Adjustable Scaling
Teranex includes fully adjustable scaling. Use adjustable scaling when you need to set custom aspect ratios, or even for reframing shots to remove image edge artifacts.
Aspect Ratio Conversion
Teranex supports a wide range of aspect ratios, including variable and fixed aspect ratios as well as active fill. Also included is the proprietary Smart aspect that warps images from 4:3 to 16:9 without visible stretching of the image that normally occurs.
Audio, Timecode and Subtitles
Video includes a lot more than images, and Teranex also supports conversion of up to 16 audio channels plus timecode and closed caption VANC data. This means timecode matches during conversion to the 0 frames, and subtitles are retained.
Convert and Capture
Teranex processors include a super fast 10 Gbps Thunderbolt port so you can connect it to your computer for capture and playback of video and audio. Simply plugging in a Thunderbolt cable transforms Teranex into a high end capture and playback solution with full software and SDK support. This means you get compatibility with editing software including Final Cut Pro, Media Composer and Premiere Pro. Plus support for After Effects, Photoshop, Nuke, ProTools, as well as the included Media Express and UltraScope software from Blackmagic Design.

    Rated 4 out of 5 by from Teranex 2D is an excellent buy. I use the teranex to upres and clean up SD material for HD. The teranex does a very very good job of upresing and format conversions. It really beats any software only solution I have used in the past. Black Magic has done a good job of re-tooling the Teranex. There are a lot of functions, though, that are not implemented yet that I am looking forward to - 2K and adjustable center crop are the primary ones. I think that this box will continue to improve with software updates from blackmagic.

    Rated 4 out of 5 by from Needs some tweeks but it SAVED my film We recently finished a feature documentary that was shot on multiple formats. DVCPRO HD & 7d. Plus a ton of archive and animated photos. The doc was originally edited in 1080 60i. We paid a facility in LA to do a frame rate conversion and spent over 5k on the transfer to 24p (for DCP and our distributors specs.) We where not 100% happy with the transfer and had to do our best to software convert a bunch of stuff. At the end of the day we didn't pass QC with our distributor. Last week we decided to buy the Teranex. The 2nd transfer was way sharper then the first transfer. I am not sure what the other post house was using, but I think it was a PHC or something like that. So maybe some of this stuff was human error. Needless to say we spent 2k for this box and 2 days of our time and I feel we have a great 24p conversion. We did have to run some shot through it a couple of time trying different settings and some stuff (mostly 7d that was imported into avid, but this was not all of the 7d just some) had to be reimported and re-edited. But I am very happy. We are still waiting for QC notes, but I am very confident in this delivery. My only wish is that I could manually zoom in on footage when up converting so I can get rid of those black line on the top and side on old footage. besides that it's great.

    Rated 4 out of 5 by from Where to start... I've only had this unit a few days, so this is extremely superficial. The CEO of the company introduces the manual by saying he's still getting familiar with the unit, so I don't claim to have gone through it exhaustively by any means. My original plan for the unit, which is to up-convert an SD camera to HD, won't work. I cannot get all the resolution the camera is capable of in the converted picture. I would not consider this a design fault though. For the money, this is a universal interface converter, test pattern generator, scaler and so much else. The front panel is intuitive and no deep menu dives are necessary to get things going. The menu screen is also a picture monitor so it is easy to check that input is present. There is some amount of processing delay even if no scaling is being used. Some items FYI: 1) This is a television standards processor. It will not work with arbitrary vga scan rates. 2) Only one resolution can be output. It is possible to select analog composite output in HD mode but there will be no signal. 3) The Thunderbolt connection does not present an extra frame buffer to the OS so only programs supported by the drivers will be able to input or output. 4) The software installer for the unit includes a special version of the waveform monitor. Do not install the standalone waveform monitor program.

    Rated 2 out of 5 by from I discovered unpleasant surprises I see that all reviews here are great, but we had a terrible experience with this unit. Things that I discovered: 1. Timecode is almost impossible to pass through the Teranex, especially when using with Thunderbolt. We contacted Blackmagic Design and they said something along the lines it wasn;t designed that way. May be we'll bring it up at our next engineering meeting. 2. We were trying to convert 23.98 to 59.94 and no matter what we tried, the resulting video was giving us wrong field order - the video had inerlacing lines visible when paused. Again, Blackmagioc design wasn't very supportive except asking to try 24psf mode instead. Had to return the unit. Lost 10% on restocking fees. Horrible. Great for low-budget projhects, but for broadcast scenarios aI need the Timecode to transfer nfrom source to destination.

Using the Teranex 2D to just convert Alexia camera 23.98psf to 59.97i so I can send the image to multiple monitors that can not lock to 23.98psf images. The unit has a nice menu structure to be able to adjust the settings. Still slowly reading the pdf manual to realize the potential of this converter. The video lcd screen works great and tells you the input or output format this can save you the added cost of another monitor.
