Leica X2 overview

  • 1Description

The Leica X2 Digital Compact Camera With Elmarit 24mm f/2.8 ASPH Lens (Black) is light, compact Leica camera equipped with a 16.1 megapixel CMOS sensor in APS-C format--a format usually only found in much larger DSLR cameras.

The Elmarit 24mm f/2.8 ASPH. non-interchangeable lens has 8 elements in 6 groups (1 aspheric lens) and enables manual focusing or precise autofocus with automatic exposure, ensuring photographers perfectly exposed, sharp images with a press of the shutter release. Its wide-angle creates sufficient distance when needed and also lets shooters to get in close to pick out the details in a scene.

Its improved CMOS sensor helps to yield low noise levels for effective low-light and indoor photography without a flash, high dynamic range and accurate color differentiation. Sensitivity goes as high as 12500 ISO. The crop factor of the sensor is 1.5 in comparison with 35mm film format, which means the lens has an effective (35mm equivalent) focal length of approximately 35mm.

A 2.7" LCD with 230,000 pixels and a 100% field of view, almost fills the entire back of the camera and enables the Live Mode and precision focusing. Users can also view and compose their images using either the optical or electronic Leica viewfinder (both optional) which fits into the accessory shoe on top of the camera body.

The camera records both JPEG and DNG file formats and registered owners can download a free copy of Adobe Lightroom to process the camera's DNG raw files. With legendary Leica precision engineering, the X2 is compact (2.7 x 4.9") and lightweight (only 11.2 oz), and features a design reminiscent of classic Leica M-series rangefinders.

Large CMOS Sensor
The CMOS image sensor of the Leica X2 in APS-C format is unusually large for such acompact camera. The result: extremely low image noise, high dynamic range, and accurate color differentiation. The combination of an exceedingly large sensor and high-performance lens sets new standards in image quality in the compact camera category.
The Leica Elmarit 24mm f/2.8 ASPH.
The Leica Elmarit 24 mm f/2.8 ASPH is a true Leica non-interchangeable lens with superior optical performance. When seen in terms of 35-mm film format, it has a focal length of 35mm.
Design
The design of the Leica X2 also expresses Leica's commitment to the essentials, thanks to its compact size and classic finish. Reminiscent of the traditional Leica M-Design, the X2 becomes an instant love affair - not just down to its captivating looks, but also the wonderful feel in your hands. Once held, even for a moment, it becomes difficult to put down. The camera's robustly engineered, full-metal chassis is reassuringly solid, while its leather trim is comfortable to the touch and provides a perfect grip.
Most Simple Control
For simple snapshots or painstakingly arranged compositions - the Leica X2 is the ideal camera for anyone with a passion for photography in its purest form. That's because it enables split-second changes between automatic and manual control. The robust dials on the top plate allow easy setting of the shutter speed and aperture. Moreover, changing the plane of focus, adjusting white balance, and other imaging parameters, allows photographers to control the look or mood of their images. In live view mode, the generously-sized, high contrast 2.7" LCD screen offers photographers constant control and a clear and detailed view, even in bright conditions.
2.7" Display
The bright 2.7" display of the X2 almost fills the entire back of the camera and reveals the finest details even in bright surroundings.
Live View
The live-view function replaces an optical viewfinder and shows an accurate preview with all essential image information. The Live Mode also makes the X2 particularly versatile for shots taken from unusual perspectives.
Precision Autofocus
The Leica X2'S fast, new autofocus feature enables extremely precise and virtually silent focusing. Perfect for situations where spontaneous reactions are essential to capture the right moment. It adapts flexibly to the situation in hand, for example, with a choice AF focusing segments or face recognition.
Universal Formats
The X2 transforms image data into JPEG files for immediate use or photographers can choose to save images in the Adobe Digital Negative (DNG), a format that allows image-relevant exploitation of all the benefits of the recorded sensor data.
Retractable Flash
The LEICA X2 features a retractable flash, which serves as a main flash but can also be used as a fill-in flash and can be synchronized to the second shutter curtain.
Workflow Solution
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, a professional digital workflow solution, is available as an online download free of charge for all Leica X2 customers. It helps keep files organized and can process the X2 DNG raw files.

    Leica X2 reviews

X2 Digital Compact Camera With Elmarit 24mm f/2.8 ASPH Lens (Black) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 42.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Leica X2 This is the first Leica Product I purchased and I am extremely happy with it. The Leica X2 overall craftsmanship is super and its fixed 24mm Lens produce very fine pictures. I did a few A/B shooting comparisons with the Leica X2 vs my Canon 5D-II/ Zeiss Distagon 35MM T/f2ZE Lens under same aparture/shutter setups and the results were both excellent with stunning picture quality. The X2 will undoubtedly be my primary camera in my future trips due to its compact size and light weight. It is an excellent machine built to take fine pictures. Highly recommended for serious photographers!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Leica X2 is amazing! I have owned an X1, a Fuji X100, a Sony Nex-7... this camera is in a league of it's own. The only camera that compared, was the X1, but the X2 is even crisper and faster. The biggest reason to buy an X1 or X2 is their incredible low light ability. You can shoot hand held pics of cities at night, without grain. This camera is the perfect travel cam! I would highly recommend it. Nothing compares for low-light photography... not even my Canon 7D! For its sensor size, nothing is lighter or smaller. Great camera. i even owned a Leica M9 and its low-light ability was horrible. The X1 and X2 are the best low-light cameras hands down. If you travel quite a bit (like me), a camera's ability to shoot in low-light is essential.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing. Glad I got one. Now I know what the Leica look is all about. There is a 3-D look to it. In 60 years of photography, I have never been so impressed with a camera. I have used Rolleflex, Nikon F100, pentax 645 and NikonD5100. But this leica x2 will be all I will use. What I like is how easy it is to use. No complicated menu. It all about taking pictures. My favorite feature is the VIVID setting. Its amazing. If you have ever shot with Fujichrome VELIVIA you will like this setting. With the leica Look and the Velvia look this is winner. Get the camera protector and the olympus VF-2viewfinder. Must cheaper then the leica one. There both the same product. I chose the Sliver body and I love it. And always I buy from B&H. there great to work with. Happy shooting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good street machine I have been using this camera for ten days; the interface is very easy to use and produces very high quality images. It handles low light and high contrast very well. I was pleasantly surprised with the automatic ISO setting, it was very precise with no need for additional adjustment. In programmed mode it works like an excellent point and shoot camera. However, I found the manual focus to be a big disappointment; it was awkward and cumbersome. A focus ring on the lens would be a great improvement . In general I have been very happy with this camera so far and would recommend it to anybody who can afford it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Money Put in the Right Places! I have several Leica rangefinder bodies and have used D-Lux 3 and 5's. The X2 has been the best compact digital I've used. Better than the X1, focusing is now fast, the dials are tight and don't slip and best of all, the high ISO photos come out crisp. While some complain about the LCD screen and other items, the money for this camera was clearly put into the CMOS chip and the lens - and I think that is most important on any camera. The bokeh wide open is great and the focus very crisp. I've had backlit subjects with crisp lines and other great shots. There is not much light dispersion and chroma, especially compared to other compacts. If quality is most important, this is a great buy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible I have the Canon 5d Mark II, Fuji X100. Fuji X-Pro & Leica M9. For the size the Leica X2 camera is incredible. Only the M9 takes cleaner shots. The size is perfect for Street Photos. THe Fuji's are good but this camera has much better saturation and detail. After two days of use, I think most of my gear will collect dust. Posted some shots so you can see how it performs. Hats off to BH Photo they excellent to deal with !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great images right out of the camera I have been working with Canon's 1D systems for years and wanted a small walk around camera with horsepower. I went with the X2. I know there are many people thinking I could have purchased Nikon or fuji for less $$$ and get large files with more camera bells and whistles.I played with them all and found the X2's simple functionality and spot on quality images right out the camera the key for me. The lens is sharp and images have great contrast and accurate color. I almost feel like I'm shooting a film camera. There is no doubt the X2 is a strong well built camera, Except.....The plastic latch that holds the battery in place popped off when I opened the battery/card door. The latch shot out of the camera like a Jack in the box. You don't expect this from Leica. Thankfully, B&H made an easy exchange for a new camera. I take this camera everywhere now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GOOD CAMERA EQUAL TO THE SONY RX 1 I OWN BOTH THE SONY RX-1 AND THE LEICA X2. WHILE BOTH CAMERAS ARE VERY SIMILAR, THE SONY IS MUCH MORE USER FRIENDLY AND TAKES QUALITY PICTURES AS GOOD AS THE X2. ON THE OTHER HAND THE SONY COSTS MUCH MORE THAN THE LEICA X2, BUT ITS FUNCTIONALITY IS FAR BETTER THAN THE LEICA. IN PARTICULAR THE MENU SYSTEM FOR THE SONY IS MUCH MORE PRACTICAL AND EASIER TO USE. I ALSO BELIEVE THAT THE SONY IS SUPERIOR IN LOW LIGHT DUE TO THE COMBINATION OF A LARGER SENSOR PLUS SUPERIOR OPTICS. FINALLY THE LEICA HAS A MUCH BETTER PHYSICAL APPEARANCE THAN THE SONY RX 1 AND IS MORE COMFORTABLE TO HOLD AND USE THAN THE SONY. BOTH CAMERAS ARE WORTH THE INVESTMENT AND PROVIDE TOP QUALITY PICTURES.
