Pentax K-30 Overview

  • 1Description

The K-30 DSLR Camera (Body Only) from Pentax is a great entry for hobbyists looking to purchase a DSLR for the first time, or photographers who need a newer camera with a more rugged construction and larger sensor. With a fast 6 frames per second and built-in sensor shift image stabilization, it will easily catch your kids playing in the big game, or the hummingbird that visits your feeder. You'll also be able to shoot worry-free due to the K-30's full weather sealing that allows for use in any weather condition, including below-freezing temperatures of 14° F!

With 16 megapixels, and a maximum resolution of 4928 x 3264, you'll also have free reign to print enlargements, easily up to 11 x 14" and beyond, to hang up in the living room or a home office. Should a single image not be able to fully capture the moment, you can even switch to video mode, with live view, and capture stunning 1080p Full HD clips of every detail--to relive whenever you want, even on a big-screen TV.

For a bit of creative freedom, there are several different capture modes that can be used to define your unique style as a photographer, including: Extract Color, Toy Camera, Retro, High Contrast, Shading, Invert Color, Color, and even HDR (High Dynamic Range). With just three exposures the camera can capture and align the images by pixel to create HDR images with ease.

No matter where you take the K-30 you can be sure it has enough power by using the rechargeable lithium-ion battery, or the optional AA Battery Holder (sold separately). With the AA Battery Holder you can use any AA batteries to power the camera when an outlet is nowhere in sight. Get the best of both world via the included rechargeable lithium0ion battery, or run into any convenience store to grab AA batteries when you need a last-minute power source.

High performance 16Mp Sensor
The 16.3 megapixel APS-C CMOS image sensor records image resolutions of up to 16M (4928 x 3264), and down to 5M (2688 x 1792). Of the four available resolutions, you can decide to record several file formats, including: RAW (DNG), JPG (EXIF 2.3), DCF 2.0 compliant, DPOF, and PIM III.
Full 1080p HD Video
Record Full HD 1080p video that features h.264 compression, flexible exposure control, and HDR finishing options. The highest resolution recorded is 1920 x 1080p with 30, 25, or 24 frames per second. These video clips are then compressed and saved in MOV or MPEG-4 AVC (h.264) formats
Image Capture and Processing
While the K-30's PRIME M image processing engine has been optimized for video shooting modes, it also captures outstanding still images at up to 6 frames per second in continuous shooting mode. Ensuring all of these images are properly focused, the advanced SAFOX IXi+ autofocus engine features an AF assist lamp, light source sensor, and improved optical components. This 11 point (9 cross) wide autofocus system features a light wavelength sensor and diffraction lens. The highly accurate 77 segment metering system ensures your images from the K-30 will have accurate exposure, even in complex lighting conditions. It also has exposure bracketing: with 3 frames, up to +/- 2 EV in 1/3 or 1/2 steps
3.0" Wide-Angle Display and Glass Pentaprism Viewfinder
The large 3 inch LCD on the back of the K-30 camera body is wide angle viewable, and features 921,000 dots of resolution. Live View on this screen has focus peaking highlights in-focus surfaces for fast and accurate manual or autofocus. Allowing for both methods of composition, the K-30 also features a low profile glass pentaprism viewfinder. It achieves a 100% optical field of view and has a magnification of 0.92x
Convenient Power Supplies
Compatible with both rechargeable Li-Ion and AA batteries (via the optional AA battery holder, sold separately), you can easily find replacement batteries for your Pentax K-30, should you run out of charge while in the field.
Worry-Free Weather Sealing
With a fully weather sealed camera body, you can shoot in poor weather conditions worry-free, or shoot sports in otherwise treacherous conditions for any other camera. The K-30 also features a rugged cold-proof design that even allows for sub-freezing use--so you can even shoot winter sports in frigid and snowy conditions.

Pentax K-30 Reviews

K-30 DSLR Camera (Body Only) (Black) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 79.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! First, let me say it is way TOO SMALL for me. I have a k20d (and I thought that was small) but the k30 is smaller still. I am not sold on the LCD as a ss, f-stop, iso all around info screen, mainly because I want to change the settings directly from the LCD instead of click 2 or more buttons/menus etc.. But I love the camera. I like the quality of the images. With 'tracking' on it has smooth auto-focus. I appreciate the customizable functions and the addition of the 720HD 60p movie mode. My youngest like the shutter sound. Wonderful iso 6400 images, low noise, low blur and more detail than I expected from that high of an iso.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Fun Little Beast I've had the K-30 for a little bit now and I've been having a field day with it. Rock solid, feels sturdy. The grip is deep and probably the best I've ever felt. I've had the chance to shoot in a good downpour with the weather-sealed kit lens and it was a blast. That lens is okay, but it's well-known to be a soft lens. It's with my primes that this camera really comes alive. Blown away by how well it handles noise, even in low light situations. I won't drone on, there really isn't too much bad to say about this camera. What you need to know is that this camera makes everything you do fun, and that is an inspiring feeling.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Adventure Touring Rugged Ready ..... I purchased it specifically for Adventure Touring. For those not in the loop, it usually involves a dual sport motorcycle and rugged roads. I have owned several rugged cameras, but never a DSLR. Now I have a weather resistant camera and lens to capture my explorations. One body, one lens, all sealed from the elements. It resides in my tank bag, or shoulder bag, dependent on the ride. I don't have to worry about the dust, rain, mud, or snow, disrupting my camera's functions. Simply pull it out, take the shot, and put it back. I recommend it for extreme outdoor activities.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The best of the bunch Over the past two years, I've been photographically promiscuous. I had a Pentax K110d and was perfectly happy until I fell for the perceived need to upgrade and the anti-Pentax hype and began a series of unhappy relationships - with DSLR (Canon t2i and Nikon d5100), m4/3 Panasonic gf1, gf2, and g1, Olympus epl1 and epl2, and Sony Nex 5n). Certainly, all are good cameras and could meet most of my needs (though I do shoot some action stuff), but none had the intangibles - the solid feel, the full-view optical viewfinder, and whatever it is that keeps one loyal to a brand.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile, responsive, high-quality I've used film SLRs for years and digital bridge cameras as well (Canon G12, Lumix FZ40), but I decided I finally wanted a dSLR to play with. I finally decided on the K30 because the reviews were very positive and the body wouldn't break the bank, letting me save up for some excellent lenses. So far I've only used the 18-135mm lens, and I'm liking it a lot--it's useful in most situations, even some wildlife shooting. The camera is fast, easy to use (especially when I read the manual, which comes in book form rather than CD--another positive for me), and produces very nice photos, with good color (and so far I've only been shooting JPEG). My only criticism so far is that the viewfinder's display (at the bottom, of exposure, f-stop and shutter speed, etc.) is a little hard to read in certain lights. I look forward to using this camera with many lenses for many years.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Superior SLR This camera has great performance. The autofocus system has been greatly improved by Pentax. The high ISO allows you to take very nice pictures in poor light conditions. You can even do fine adjustment for up to 20 different lenses and the camera saves all the settings. Beautiful pictures...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive mid-level camera. First off this K30 isn't your typical entry level dSLR. It has many features entry level cameras lack, a 100% pentaprizm viewfinder, weather sealing, a sensor that nearly rivals that of it's higher tier K5, dual wheels and a very solid build. Everyday I had the K30, still longed for the K5. Everyday I have the K5 I wonder if I should have kept the K30. The K5 does have a few advantages, 1stop better DR, option for a grip, even better build quality, high max shutter speed, and a really quiet shutter (to list a few). But, the K30 has a faster/newer processor, quicker autofocus, everything about the K30 feels snappier than the K5. Image quality between them is so close to the same, K5 wins a tad in the shadows, K30 wins a little in the upper ISO ranges. K5 wins a bit in more advanced features, K30 wins a bit in the video side of things. When the K30 was selling for about the same price as the K5 it was a tough choice. If the price difference was $300 or so. I'd have the K30 still. It really is a remarkable camera, and anyone that doesn't want a grip the K30 is great choice that you may not outgrow for years (if ever). Personally I'd recommend the K30 kit that has the 18-135mm vs the 18-55mm. A Decent kit lens but 18-55mm just doesn't have what it takes to make the K30 shine (to me, to you I don't know). This feature/quality mix at this price. This is an easy 5star rating.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Buy I purchased this Pentax K-30 DSLR to replace my aging Sony DSC-R1 fixed lens camera. I did a lot of research comparing other cameras and concluded the Pentax was a lot of camera for the price. My only concern was the lens performance as my other camera had a superb Zeiss lens and some reviews of the Pentax kit lens were not that impressive. Well, I purchased the 18mm-55mm AL- WR lens and although it is no match to the Zeiss lens, it produces excellent resolution and is superior to other kit lens I have looked at both in quality and performance. I have owned many Pentax cameras over the years including Medium Format and I have nothing but admiration for the way Pentax takes a different path in their approach to what a photog needs. Kudos Pentax.
