Oben CT-3521 overview

  • 1Description

The CT-3521 Carbon Fiber Tripod with BE-106T Ball Head from Oben is a sturdy yet lightweight tripod with 5-section legs that fold upward 180° to create an extremely compact package for transport – with the included head attached, folded length is only 14.8". For further versatility, one of the legs unscrews from the chassis and attaches to the head & center column to form a working-height monopod. With a system load capacity of 6.6 lb, the tripod and head ensure a stable base for many DSLR body/lens combinations.

With the five leg sections and the center column extended, the maximum height of the tripod with the head is 56.4". The legs are non-rotating, which enables single-handed operation of the rubber twist locks on each leg: One twist of the wrist, and the four leg stages descend. Each leg is independently adjustable, and they can be locked securely at three different angles. The tripod's feet feature rubber tips that can be removed to reveal metal spikes, allowing you to shoot both indoors and outdoors on any terrain.

To shoot in monopod mode, simply unscrew the leg that forms the base of the monopod, remove the center column from the chassis, and screw these two elements together. With the head & center column mounted on the extended leg, you have a full size monopod that's even taller than the tripod at full height.

Like the legs, the center column features a twist lock that frees up its extension and retraction. For protection when it's retracted quickly, there's a rubber damper that protects the center-post collar. At the bottom of the center column is a spring-loaded ballast hook that allows you to attach a counterweight for extra stability. The detachable hook doubles as a stopper for the center column, which can be removed and reversed for low-angle shooting.

The BE-106T head features one locking knob for the ball and a separate knob to control the 360° panning. This enables fast setup changes, and frees you to keep a finger on the shot trigger while you're making a quick adjustment to the head's orientation. The head has a 90° notch which facilitates shooting in portrait orientation. Two bull's eye bubble levels ensure your camera is level on both the horizontal and vertical axes.

The included Arca-type quick-release plate attaches to your camera via its standard 1/4"-20 screw. The quick-release plate has two safety screws to prevent the camera from accidentally being released when adjusting the plate fore and aft.

This tripod also includes a fitted, padded carry case with a removable shoulder strap, two heavy-duty zippers, and an interior zipper pocket. A tool clip with two hex wrenches for adjusting the center column and the leg joints is also included. It snaps onto any of the tripod legs for easy access.

Reverse-Folding Legs
The legs fold up 180° so that the ball head is concealed between them. This reduces the overall height of the folded tripod.
Short Column
The long section of the column can be removed, so that the head and short column section can be attached directly to the chassis.
Adjustable Legs
The legs are independently adjustable to 3 leg angles: 24, 55, and 80°.

    Oben CT-3521 reviews

CT-3521 Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod with BE-106T Ball Head is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 30.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from The worst tripod Ive ever owned I purchased this tripod because of its lightweight design for traveling and obviously I don't expect it to be the sturdiest unit out there but the centre support pole snapped the first day of use. Stuff happens, Oben was nice enough to replace this after returning the unit under their warranty. The next week I had it out and the 3 screws on the bottom of the ball head came loose and these continue to come loose every time I take it out. Overall, if you were looking to get a lightweight tripod I would go for something a little more robust if you plan on leaving the house with it. The light weight trade off is not worth the problems that come with it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good for travel and a mirrorless system The tripod works well for a Fujifilm X-T1, especially if you get one of the Fujifilm or Really Right Stuff baseplates/grips that have the dovetail groove as part of the their construction. This is not the tripod for a Canon 6D with a 70-200 f2.8 L lens (or something similar), although if you are careful it will probably work. The case that comes with the tripod is very convenient, and the tripod sets up quickly.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed dissatisfied I purchased this tripod hoping for a lighter alternative to my heavy tripod. What I ended up with was an inconvenient, flimsy excuse for a tripod. The only really nice thing about this tripod is its weight. It is very light! It just isn't functional. The legs are spilt into five sections. They are held in place by screwing each section in or out. It is very difficult to get them all set right. More often than not one wouldn't be tight enough when I set up the tripod. This causes one leg to go in. The bubble levels weren't very functional either. Needless to say this tripod was shipped back. It sure sucks that I had to pay over $ to ship it back. Don't make the same mistake I did. Just stay away from this tripod!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great for Small DSLR Cameras Don't get me wrong but this is a great tripod but the weight capacity is over specified. The tripod becomes unstable when I mount my Nikon D810 with a 24-300 lens. I had to return the product and get a larger more sturdy tripod.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Extremely disappointing :(( On paper (or on the screen) the spec of this tripod looked too good to be true ... and so it turned out to be. Yes it's light and yes it folds down to around 14. But as a photographic tool - a total waiste of time and money. It's not solid, having five sections is a pain to operate and most importantly, after a few months of very moderate use one of the legs just seezed up and stopped working. Without doubt, the worst piece of equipment I've bought from B&H and I've been ordering stuff for many years. Don't be fooled by the 'amazing' specs - unless you want to throw your money away, give this a miss. I can only assume that either I got a dud sample or the people who rated this highly have it in storage and use it a couple of times a year.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great size for backpacking Bought this specifically for backpacking where size and weight is everything. Folds up small enough to fit in side mesh of backpack and extends tall enough for my 5' frame without raising center column. I've used it only a few times so far but am very happy with it. I even grab it when I'm not backpacking (city walks, etc). The arca-swiss compatible head fits my plates and it holds my D700 with 16-35 lens (also does well with 24-70). Haven't tested with a larger/heavier lens such as my 70-200 but then that's not a lens I'd take backpacking. The bubble level is an extra bonus but doesn't work in portrait mode. I usually use a bubble level that slips into the flash shoe for that. Overall I'm liking this a lot and would recommend it for hikers, backpackers and general walk-around / travel.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Tripod with a Couple Weaknesses This Oben CF Tripod is a nice piece. It is well made and attractive looking. Its function is smooth and effortless except for the stability hook. Its a finger nail breaker to pull that hook out. The only other suggestion I have so far is the mounting screw for the quick release plate requires an allen wrench to tighten. Who in the world wants to carry an allen wrench for whenever you may need to attach it to a camera or remove it from one? Why not just a knurled screw to tighten by hand?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed with the flimsy center pole I liked this tripod a lot at the beginning as it is light weight and compact. It could be an excellent tripod for travelling if the center pole is not built so flimsy. After six month moderate use for just two trips, the center pole of my tripod broken into two pieces. I checked my other tripods at home, all the center pole of my other tripods are built with one piece. However, the center pole of this tripod is built with two pieces, and they use only glue to keep the two pieces together.
