Oben CT-3531 Overview

  • 1Description

The CT-3531 Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod with BE-108T Ball Head from Oben is a sturdy yet lightweight tripod with 5-section legs that fold upward 180° to create an extremely compact package for transport – with the included head attached, folded length is only 15.5". For further versatility, one of the legs unscrews from the chassis and attaches to the head & center column to form a working-height monopod. With a system load capacity of 8.8 lb, the tripod and head ensure a stable base for many DSLR body/lens combinations.

With the five leg sections and the center column extended, the maximum height of the tripod with the head is 60.8". The legs are non-rotating, which enables single-handed operation of the rubber twist locks on each leg: One twist of the wrist, and the four leg stages descend. Each leg is independently adjustable, and they can be locked securely at three different angles. The tripod's feet feature rubber tips that can be removed to reveal metal spikes, allowing you to shoot both indoors and outdoors on any terrain.

To shoot in monopod mode, simply unscrew the leg that forms the base of the monopod, remove the center column from the chassis, and screw these two elements together. With the head & center column mounted on the extended leg, you have a full size monopod that's even taller than the tripod at full height.

Like the legs, the center column features a twist lock that frees up its extension and retraction. For protection when it's retracted quickly, there's a rubber damper that protects the center-post collar. At the bottom of the center column is a spring-loaded ballast hook that allows you to attach a counterweight for extra stability. The detachable hook doubles as a stopper for the center column, which can be removed and reversed for low-angle shooting.

The BE-108T head features one locking knob for the ball and a separate knob to control the 360° panning. This enables fast setup changes and frees you to keep a finger on the shot trigger while you're making a quick adjustment to the head's orientation. The head has a 90° notch which facilitates shooting in portrait orientation. Two bull's eye bubble levels ensure your camera is level on both the horizontal and vertical axes.

The included Arca-type quick-release plate attaches to your camera via its standard 1/4"-20 screw. The quick-release plate has two safety screws to prevent the camera from accidentally being released when adjusting the plate fore and aft.

This tripod also includes a fitted, padded carry case with a removable shoulder strap, two heavy-duty zippers, and an interior zipper pocket. A tool clip with two hex wrenches for adjusting the center column and the leg joints is also included. It snaps onto any of the tripod legs for easy access.

Reverse-Folding Legs
The legs fold up 180° so that the ball head is concealed between them. This reduces the overall height of the folded tripod.
Short Column
The long section of the column can be removed, so that the head and short column section can be attached directly to the chassis.
Adjustable Legs
The legs are independently adjustable to 3 leg angles: 24, 55, and 80°.

    Oben CT-3531 Reviews

CT-3531 Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod with BE-108T Ball Head is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 46.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good For Backpacking, Not perfect Stability This product was purchased for extended trip backpacking where pounds count. In terms of the pods, the packability, weight and price, it's a winner. However, combining those features does come at the cost of some stability and ease of extending/fastening the legs. You can use this tripod for night shots but it wouldn't be my top choice due to the thin slightly wobbly legs. Also 5 twist type leg locks on three legs meaning 15 adjustments every time you want to set up the tripod means you won't be winning any speed contests. However, it's better than lugging a brick around in the backcountry and it works quite well for general shots and is way more affordable most CF pods.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compact and full-featured This fairly compact tripod is fully functional (and yes, it even has a hook to hang a bag to enhance stability!): dual rubber/steel pikes, suited for macro (either by extending the legs to the lowest position or by inverting the center column), a very handy ball head with quick-release plate and, for me the best of it all, the ability to very easily and rapidly convert the tripod into a very strong and full-height monopod: for travel, it really offers the best of both worlds. Included also is a handy carrying case with both handle and shoulder strap as well as a complete tool kit. I can see no downside to it for field/travel use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very nice travel tripod Very good value for the price I paid (bought it on super sale). Oben is a B&H house brand that's made in China but the quality and finishes are very good. The 8 in 108T means an 8.8 pound weight load for the ball head. The 117T ball head has a 17 pound max load.Pros: Lightweight (2.5 pounds), compact (15.5 folded), nicely finished, nice padded carry bag with interior zipper pocket, converts to monopod, weight hook, twin bubble levels, spiked feet with rubber caps. Cons: 1) The included Arca-type plate unfortunately uses a hex screw. They include a hex tool and handy tool clip for attaching it to a tripod leg. A tool-less D-ring screw is preferred. 2)The 5-section legs are a bit spindly towards the bottom. Under heavy loads you can see them deflect. A 4-section leg would be stiffer but would not be as compact unless it were a shorter tripod. 3)the 8.8 pound max load on the head will handle my Nikon D600 and 70-200VR2 but barely. I would feel more confident if it had the 17 pound ball head. I have a much heavier duty Manfrotto for home use but this guy goes with me when I travel. The Manfrotto Befree, MeFoto Backpacker, and Sirui T-1005x have similar specs so you have to decide which is a better value.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great travel tripod I was not in the market for a new tripod, but couldn't resist when I saw this as a great deal at less than 1/2 the price. I had a very inexpensive aluminum tripod before this and did not think that I could justify the expensive of a carbon fiber tripod. I travel often and also do urban and landscape photography locally, often getting to the shoot on public transportation. This tripod easily fits in my backpack. The tripod is very stable and the weight limit of 8.5 lbs is no issue for my Sony a6000 and lenses. The expanded height is perfect for me. This tripod works well for travel and landscape photography

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Big Disappointment! I purchased my OBEN tripod (CT3531+BE108T) couple of months back and going through a very bad experience with it! the build quality seems poor and almost all part of the tripod loosening up now -- e.g. the ball head has a big play even after tightening fully, teh hex screw often gets loose (needs frequent tightening and very annoying), some of the legs come out fully while stretching the leg (even I almost lost one tripod leg when it fell off its own during a photo tour -- was lucky to find it back), and the bag-hook on the center column fallen off somewhere after getting loose of its own. It's a big disappointment for me and I don't feel comfortable now taking out this tripod. Not sure, if I can return the whole product and get money back. I would not recommend this product at all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome - a real back saver ! I just spent a week covering CES for my YouTube channel and found this tripod to be nothing short of miraculous. It is about half the weight of my camera yet was strong enough to hold it in place. The ball head is very smooth and can actually pan quite nicely if using a larger video camera. The only issue I had with it are the 5 section legs - it took awhile to get it out of the bag and ready to shoot. But once it was put together I retracted the bottom legs and walked around with the camera mounted. If you're using a smaller camera under 8 pounds and don't want to lug around a monster tripod this is a great alternative. It really made my life easier for a challenging week of shooting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight & Versatile This tripod was everything I was hoping for after years of using an older tripod. It's carbon fiber construction makes it super lightweight (2.5 lbs) - which means easy transport to the locations I visit for my landscape photography. The detachable leg and column for monopod makes it incredibly versatile. The tripod stays put which means I don't have to worry no matter what exposure I'm going for, or the terrain of where I'm shooting. Metal feet with spikes keeps it in place. I would suggest this tripod to my friends and family - great value for a great piece of photography gear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I will buy from Oben again! After reading many positive reviews, I decided to purchase the Oben CT-3531 Carbon Fiber Tripod With BE-108T Ball Head for a 24 day trek along the John Muir Trail. Unfortunately, the tripod was unable to support my camera and lens (5lbs altogether); the camera would slowly slip during long-exposure shots and actually slipped form the adjustable plate twice. I reached out to Oben and they answered immediately. A representative worked with me personally to exchange the tripod and replace it with one that offered more stability, and they also covered the shipping and return expenses. I would absolutely recommend Oben and their merchandise, though a word of caution to 5D Mark III owners- consider a model with more load capacity. I now use the Oben CT-3561.
