Oben CT-3561 overview

  • 1Description

The CT-3561 Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod with BE-117T Ball Head from Oben is a sturdy yet lightweight tripod with 5-section legs that fold upward 180° to create an extremely compact package for transport – with the included head attached, folded length is only 16.8". For further versatility, one of the legs unscrews from the chassis and attaches to the head & center column to form a working-height monopod. With a system load capacity of 17.6 lb, the tripod and head ensure a stable base for many DSLR body/lens combinations.

With the five leg sections and the center column extended, the maximum height of the tripod with the head is 64.3". The legs are non-rotating, which enables single-handed operation of the rubber twist locks on each leg: One twist of the wrist, and the four leg stages descend. Each leg is independently adjustable, and they can be locked securely at three different angles. The tripod's feet feature rubber tips that can be removed to reveal metal spikes, allowing you to shoot both indoors and outdoors on any terrain.

To shoot in monopod mode, simply unscrew the leg that forms the base of the monopod, remove the center column from the chassis, and screw these two elements together. With the head & center column mounted on the extended leg, you have a full size monopod that's even taller than the tripod at full height.

Like the legs, the center column features a twist lock that frees up its extension and retraction. For protection when it's retracted quickly, there's a rubber damper that protects the center-post collar. At the bottom of the center column is a spring-loaded ballast hook that allows you to attach a counterweight for extra stability. The detachable hook doubles as a stopper for the center column, which can be removed and reversed for low-angle shooting.

The BE-117T head features one locking knob for the ball and a separate knob to control the 360° panning. This enables fast setup changes, and frees you to keep a finger on the shot trigger while you're making a quick adjustment to the head's orientation. The head has a 90° notch which facilitates shooting in portrait orientation. Two bull's eye bubble levels ensure your camera is level on both the horizontal and vertical axes.

The included Arca-type quick release plate attaches to your camera via its standard 1/4"-20 screw. The quick release plate has two safety screws to prevent the camera from accidentally being released when adjusting the plate fore and aft.

This tripod also includes a fitted, padded carry case with a removable shoulder strap, two heavy-duty zippers, and an interior zipper pocket. A tool clip with two hex wrenches for adjusting the center column and the leg joints is also included. It snaps onto any of the tripod legs for easy access.

Reverse-Folding Legs
The legs fold up 180° so that the ball head is concealed between them. This reduces the overall height of the folded tripod.
Short Column
The long section of the column can be removed, so that the head and short column section can be attached directly to the chassis.
Adjustable Legs
The legs are independently adjustable to 3 leg angles: 24, 55, and 80°.

    Oben CT-3561 reviews

CT-3561 Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod with BE-117T Ball Head is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from better than above average Used with a 400mm lens, at a short extension and 180mm macro (remote trigger) the tripod does well. Light enough to carry into the woods via pack. Not beefy enough for a heavy Canon 500mm lens though. Ball head functions well and has solid support/lock. Quality is spot on, aluminum fittings, with carbon thicker walled tubes . Didn't want to spring for the RRS branded tripod. To much money for my wallet, to see it get banged up on rocks or wet and salted at the beach. I pay to play and don't get paid to play. I do recommend the tripod but suggest a heavier option from Oben to support the heavy stuff.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not what it claims to be I am a professional photographer and a wilderness guide and purchased this tripod for travel. At first it seemed to work fine but during light use a leg locking mechanism cracked - almost tumbling my camera into the dirt as it collapsed. The ball head is advertised as being able to carry 17.6 lbs. I was using barely 5 pounds of camera/lens and felt nervous. When wet, all the leg stops slip. It continually drooped unless I really cranked on the ball head dial. As a result I would have to compose well above where I wanted my eventual shot to be and it was a guess where the drooping would cease. It shook in a light wind and when using the hook the rubber gasket would always roll off. It was nerve racking to trust the strength of that hook to my backpack of lenses. Overall, it was over-exaggerated in terms of its capabilities, a light duty hobbyist product advertised as a semi-pro model. I owned a SunPak from Costco years ago that cost $ and was more reliable. I tried to work with Customer Service at Oben for an upgrade and they defensively kept assuring me that this was the droid I was looking for. Not a good experience all around.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Be Careful When Turning Leg Locks The positive is that the height is very good, although I haven't tested it yet with a very heavy lens. My concern at this point is that it doesn't take a very long turn for the leg locks to become disconnected from the leg. This allows the extending portion of the leg to just fall out completely. This happened to me outdoors at night and I was fortunate to find the plastic pieces which fell out and act as the stops when extending the legs. I'm used to clasp locks, so this may just be a learning adjustment for me. For now, I'm trying to find the sweet spot on the lock turns so that the legs extend smoothly without falling out.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Why I like this tripod I purchased this product while on a three month vacation in Texas. The first time I used the tripod I was going to return it. Even tho it is rated to hold 17 pounds it looks a bit wimpy in the last leg section. However I thought I would test it a few more times. I'm glad I did. for my height 5'10 I don't even use the last leg extention. I really like the portability also how small and compact it folds down into. For me this has been proven to be a good choice.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Failed on first use I unbox tripod and loosen joints so I can extend legs. Two of the three open fine. Last section of 3rd leg pulls right out and two little pieces of plastic flutter to the ground. It seems they are the shims that fit around the leg and hold it from pulling out. (They are not visible on any other legs.) I place the shims back on and carefully reinsert the leg, slide it in all the way and then slide it out again. Same thing, pops right out and shims flutter to floor. Repeat. But now the leg is very stiff and does not move easily in and out. If that's what happens the first time I use it, no thanks. On the plus side, price was good, it did come with a serviceable ball-head, came with a decent carrying bag, and it is light and compact. I wish it had worked.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so great Only used it twice so far but living in Montana along the Rocky Mountain Front I encounter plenty of wind and during my two uses it's been great. Spikes helped for stability and I was able to let it stand by itself in 20-25 mph winds with my camera on it. I like it so far
