Oben CT-3581 overview

  • 1Description

The CT-3581 Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod with BE-126T Ball Head from Oben is a sturdy yet lightweight tripod with 5-section legs that fold upward 180° to create an extremely compact package for transport – with the included head attached, folded length is only 16.9". For further versatility, one of the legs unscrews from the chassis and attaches to the head & center column to form a working-height monopod. With a system load capacity of 26.4 lb, the tripod and head ensure a stable base for many DSLR body/lens combinations.

With the five leg sections and the center column extended, the maximum height of the tripod with the head is 67.9". The legs are non-rotating, which enables single-handed operation of the rubber twist locks on each leg: One twist of the wrist, and the four leg stages descend. Each leg is independently adjustable, and they can be locked securely at three different angles. The tripod's feet feature rubber tips that can be twisted to reveal retractable metal spikes, allowing you to shoot both indoors and outdoors on any terrain.

To shoot in monopod mode, simply unscrew the leg that forms the base of the monopod, remove the center column from the chassis, and screw these two elements together. With the head & center column mounted on the extended leg, you have a full size monopod that's even taller than the tripod at full height.

Like the legs, the center column features a twist lock that frees up its extension and retraction. For protection when it's retracted quickly, there's a rubber damper that protects the center-post collar. At the bottom of the center column is a spring-loaded ballast hook that allows you to attach a counterweight for extra stability. The detachable hook doubles as a stopper for the center column, which can be removed and reversed for low-angle shooting.

The BE-126T head features one locking knob for the ball and a separate knob to control the 360° panning. This enables fast setup changes, and frees you to keep a finger on the shot trigger while you're making a quick adjustment to the head's orientation. The head has a 90° notch which facilitates shooting in portrait orientation. Two bull's eye bubble levels ensure your camera is level on both the horizontal and vertical axes.

The included Arca-type quick release plate attaches to your camera via its standard 1/4"-20 screw. The quick release plate has two safety screws to prevent the camera from accidentally being released when adjusting the plate fore and aft.

This tripod also includes a fitted, padded carry case with a removable shoulder strap, two heavy-duty zippers, and an interior zipper pocket. A tool clip with two hex wrenches for adjusting the center column and the leg joints is also included. It snaps onto any of the tripod legs for easy access.

Reverse-Folding Legs
The legs fold up 180° so that the ball head is concealed between them. This reduces the overall height of the folded tripod.
Short Column
The long section of the column can be removed, so that the head and short column section can be attached directly to the chassis.
Adjustable Legs
The legs are independently adjustable to 3 leg angles: 24, 55, and 80°.

    Oben CT-3581 reviews

CT-3581 Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod with BE-126T Ball Head is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 58.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The perfect companion When I ordered this tripod, I had my doubts that it would live up to my expectations. After days of testing, all doubts are gone. It is more than sturdy enough to support the weight of a pro DSLR w/400mm lens. Very solid, light weight and compact enough to carry anywhere, including backpacking. Now, when I leave a tripod at home, it's the big heavy one I used to use. I would recommend this one to anybody who travels, whether on wheels or on foot. Advice: If you have heavy zooms with tripod mounts on them, purchase an extra QR-20 quick release plate so you can leave one mounted on the lens to make it easier when swapping lens'.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid 5 stars and I returned it, but only because after getting it, I felt I'd be fine with the next lighter model (CT-3451 with BE-113T). I've worked as a machinist, and this thing is impressively nice. I carry my gear backpacking and sea kayaking, and after seeing how solid it was, I decided the 2.5 lb model would work fine, and at more than a pound lighter, I'd not leave it behind when space and weight are at a premium. The ball head (on either) are very nicely built, provides smooth view change, and no sag to the camera when ball clamp is tightened. Legs are fine too, all features are very well designed and built.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent quality, light weight and affo Was looking for a tripod that was small and light enough to hike, backpack, and to avoid leaving behind because it was too bulky, yet provided the strength for sharp images and durability for mountain landscapes. Looked at high visibility solutions such as Gitzo, etc. but couldn't justify the cost for my level, the Oben is a great fit at about 1/3 the cost. Folds small. I'm 6'2, the spec sheet provided a height that I was concerned would be a bit short, but this height was the tripod leg height without the center column, in actuality the overall height is more like 6'5, a pleasant surprise.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Returned Next Day Read all the reviews and was excited to start using this tripod. It was my first venture into an upgrade, more expensive tripod. Right out of the box as I was extending the legs, the section came apart and three little plastic pieces fell out. I returned immediately because I felt it was too easy for the sections to come apart when I was only trying to extend the legs and I did not want to try to reassemble the plastic pieces because it was brand new. I was very disappointed and did not replace it with the same product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Tripod I had an aluminum Manfrotto tripod that was good, but bulky for trips into the woods. This Oben carbon fiber tripod is shorter when folded up (16.9 inches) and attaches to my Lowepro back-pack. The Manfrotto was too big and heavy to do that. The Oben is light, sturdy for my Canon T5i with 70-200 L lens, and is a great value. The BE126T ball head is very nice as well, and I like the fact that you can do panning shots with it without the head unscrewing from the tripod. Overall, a great value, more practical than the Manfrotto and fast shipping by B & H.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic value & quality for a carbon tripod After days of research I ended up with this model. I upgraded from an older alloy Oben 3400 aluminium tripod and what a huge difference. Being 5'11 tall this tripod is the perfect hight for my Nikon D7200 with battery grip that doesn't require use of the center column. It's extremely stiff and sturdy. The ball head is awesome and doesn't slip after being tightened. Everything folds up to be really compact and travel friendly. Only gripe is I rather it be 4 sections instead of 5, but it's not that major of a deal. NOTE: This comes with a thumb screw where the picture shows you need a tool.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Legs falling off after 2nd use I purchased this tripod in December and just used in for the 2nd time to photograph fireworks on July 4th....very light utilization to date. When extending the legs, multiple sections of the legs were falling off and small plastic pieces were falling out of the openings as well. I've returned the tripod to B&H for repair or replacement. Based on my experience and other current reviews of this product, I would strongly consider a product from another manufacturer.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Loved at first, then luster wore off. Purchased this tripod for my 5DIII, loved it when I first received it. I have been using this for about 5 months now and it's beginning to show signs of wear and tear after light use. I would call the ball head subpar quality, it can't even support the weight of my 5DIII without wiggling around, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of a stable tripod. One I make adjustments i will tighten up the head and the whole thing settles into place where the rotating parts meat the base no matter how hard I tighten it. Wasn't an issue at first but developed over using it less than a dozen times. The second issue. I have had is the construction is overall pretty flimsy. While carbon fiber is one of the strongest lightest materials around, the inside bits you can't see are made from cheap brittle plastic. How do i know this? I was in the middle of Northern Michigan around 1am trying to do some astrophotography, as i am extending the legs(the monopod one) i hear a snap. The end most leg section falls into the snow. I get out my flashlight to find the little white plastic stopper that keeps leg sections from over extending has snapped in half and part of it fell into the snow never to be seen again. Annoyed, I fumbled the leg back in, in the pitch black northern michigan night and said good bye to ever making this tripod easy to level again. Is it light? yes. Is it pretty? yes. is it functional? kind of. This may be a fine tripod for a smaller camera, but its been nothing but more and more disappointing as i keep using it, and now that one of the monopod leg's stoppers snapped its inconvenient to even use as a monopod.
