Oben CT-2361 overview

  • 1Description

The CT-2361 Carbon Fiber Tripod from Oben is a sturdy support for any compact DSLR, point-and-shoot camera, or a compact camcorder. With a load capacity of 17.6 lb and a maximum height of 60", the tripod offers a number of advanced features that ensure its stability and reliable performance.

The tripod features ergonomically designed rubber twist locks on each leg. Because legs are non-rotating, both of a leg's locks can be disengaged at once with a single twist of the wrist. This enables extremely fast setup of the CT-2361. A thoughtful leg design makes it a simpler task to service and maintain the leg sections.

With its 6x carbon fiber legs and center column, the CT-2361 is both lightweight (the tripod weighs just 2.40 lb) and solid, ready to survive the rigors of professional work. The tripod chassis is cast aluminum for further strength.

The CT-2361's rapid center column extends with a twist of the butterfly knob. For protecting your camera when the column is retracted quickly, there's a rubber damper under the center-post collar. Steel locking screws underneath the collar enable you to fasten a camera head more securely.

Pull-in/push-out positive leg locks allow you to set the positions of the three legs independently at three different angles. This allows you to shoot from low angles or on uneven terrain. For stability on softer terrain, the CT-2361 features metal spikes that retract and emerge by twisting the foot's rubber portion.

For extreme low-angle shooting, the center column can be split into two sections with the provided hex key. The shorter column leaves no protruding parts under the tripod collar, allowing you to extend the legs out to their maximum angle. For a faster method, the center column is also easily reversible. These features are especially ideal for macro and close-up photography. The retractable metal counterweight hook serves as a stopper at the bottom of the center column.

Ergonomically designed rubber twist locks on each leg are non-rotating so all three of a leg's locks can be disengaged at once with a single twist of the wrist enabling fast setup.

    Oben CT-2361 reviews

CT-2361 Carbon Fiber Tripod is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this tripod! I love this tripod! I needed something strong, yet light and easy to set up in a hurry. Despite having one more leg section than my old tripod, I can set this one up faster. I like the screw tighteners and the ability to hang something from the center post to give me more stability, should I need it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So light weight I have been hauling around a tripod that starts out as aluminum and ends the day as cast iron and this is perfect for me. Solid quality and I am extremely happy with it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Worked fine with some quirks, until one day at the beach... I really liked this tripod. It was somewhat affordable, lightweight and did a fine job as a tripod which was certainly a big step below Gitzo and RRS, but at a big step below them in price. However, there were some gripes from day 1 and a recent trip to the Oregon Coast rendered the tripod dead in the water...literally. First, the center column is somewhat loose in the center and tightening it would take care of most of the play but it would still twist and wiggle ever so slightly. Not a major deal but noteworthy. Also, removing the center column involves using a tiny hex key and 9/10 times I had it in my kit but at least twice the wrench was lost and so out in the field, I had no way to remvoe the center column, let alone quickly like some other systems. And when taking the center column out and just using the baseplate, no matter what there was always movement; it was just poor build quality to blame here though it was just an annoyance, it never really got in the way of my work though I can appreciate how for some it could. Adjusting the leg angles worked OK but I much prefer systems where the lock is spring loaded and/or snaps into place when you hit the angles. Plus, the lock was really tight and awkward to open up as you "pinch" it to pull it up which eased up as I used it but it never really felt totally right and always required more effort and thought to operate than I'd have liked. Not a deal killer, just a minor annoyance. Now, to Oregon about 2 years after I bought it... I took the tripod to the beach and this was not it's first time in sand, where it performed OK though after the 1st time I took it in the sand you heard the grinding of sand in the legs every time you'd extend them and legs that would slide open by gravity now required assistance to open. This time the tripod got submerged in the ocean after a rogue wave came over the rock that had been protecting me/us and thankfully no camera on the tripod at the time but it nevertheless was covered in salt water and fine sand. A trip to the restroom in the park to rinse it off and I was left with a tripod that would not cinch the legs in place, in effect rending it to be usable only in the "resting" position with the leg sections fully retracted. I disassembled it and cleaned it thoroughly and nothing worked. There's probably some replacement parts I can get to rebuild the locking rings on the feet but I cleaned it thoroughly and removed all the sand I could and no matter how hard you tighten the legs they never hold. It can be argued that one should be more careful with their gear but why baby it? I expect when paying $300+ for a tripod that if I do something boneheaded like letting it get covered in sand and saltwater that if I go and clean it it's good as new...or better yet, it's sealed and protected for when these things occur because shooting landscapes, your equipment is in some rough conditions constantly. I think if you use this is a non-harsh environment exclusively it's a fine tripod even with those gripes above, but certainly a big step below the Gitzo and RRS brands. If you use this is any sort of harsh environment, I cannot recommend this tripod as it cannot seal out the elements and I'd have no trust taking it anywhere but indoors or a sidewalk.
