Oben CC-2361L overview

  • 1Description

The CC-2361L 3-Section Carbon Fiber Lateral Tripod Legs from Oben is a sturdy, professional support for any DSLR, point-and-shoot camera, or a compact camcorder. With a load capacity of 17.6 lb and a generous maximum height of 65.3", the lateral tripod features a tilting, swiveling center column that enables flexible positioning for macro photography and other uses.

Engaging the lateral adjustment lever frees the tilting of the center column once it's been extended past the chassis, which becomes possible by pressing the button at the column's bottom to disengage the safety bolt. Once extended, the column can tilt, with no ratcheting, from its original 0°, straight-up-and-down orientation, to a 180° upside-down orientation – with possible stops everywhere in between, including a 90° lateral position. Twisting a knob on the chassis locks and unlocks the 360° swiveling of the center column and its upper collar.

The tripod's flip locks, which enable the extension and securing of the leg stages, are user-adjustable. By using a supplied Allen key, the user can tighten two points on each spring-loaded flip lock to safeguard their continued reliable performance.

With its 6x carbon fiber legs and center column, the CC-2361L is lightweight (3.15 lb) and extremely durable. The tripod chassis is cast aluminum for further durability.

When it's not being used in its lateral mode, the CC-2361L's rapid center column functions like any professional tripod, extending after a twist of the knob on the upper collar. The tripod's center column can also be removed from both the chassis and the upper collar so that it can be reversed. For protecting your camera when the column is retracted quickly, there's a rubber damper under the center-post collar. Steel locking screws underneath the center-post collar enable you to fasten a camera head more securely.

Pull-in/push-out positive leg locks allow you to set the positions of the three legs independently at three different angles. This allows you to shoot from low angles or on uneven terrain. For stability on softer terrain, the CC-2361L features metal spikes that retract and emerge by twisting the foot's rubber portion.

Center column adjusts throughout a complete sphere of possible positions, so you can take steady shots from virtually any angle
The two included Allen keys attach to a tripod leg, so you're always ready to tighten components
Reversible 1/4"-20 & 3/8"-16 screw fits almost any head
Bubble level on tripod chassis
Center column is grooved to prevent its rotation within the upper collar
Integrated aluminum loop for attaching the optional shoulder strap
Rugged rubber tips with retractable spikes for shooting both indoors and outdoors on any terrain
Included padded carry bag features dual heavy-duty zippers, an interior pocket, and extra room to accommodate a head

    Oben CC-2361L reviews

CC-2361L 3-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs is rated 2.5 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't last a year I bought a slightly different Oben that is now discontinued, but this the closest spec to what I bought. I used it several times last year, but not a great deal. Well, two of the legs locked up. Tight. They wouldn't budge so I sent it in to Oben for warranty service. They looked at it and refused to honor the warranty because the tripod had been exposed to salt water. You can't use these tripods near an ocean because, well, they die. If you use your tripod in the real world, look for another brand that knows how to build a tripod and stands behind the warranty.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Flexible, lightweight and affordable Replacing a 2 yr old Vanguard Alta Pro (similar center column articulation). The Oben is lighter weight - and that's mostly good thing. I like the clip type leg tensioners vs. twist lock (in the field, leaning over, crouching down, twist direction can become confusing). The Alta Pro's center column is more robust and glides up/down easier than this tripod (best to use two hands to push and pull up the center column).

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dont bother with this company Design is great. Product fell apart. Warranty service is non existent. I really regret buying this now.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Falls apart Leg hardware started to fail in the first 30 days. I suffered through emailing the company and finally got a replacement screw. But leg hardware is a big issue still. Additionally the extension portion from the top never secures well and is always a bit offset when trying to keep solid. Would not recommend

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great versatility and seems sturdy The center column of this carbon fiber tripod is great for macrophotography and for getting your camera in awkward locations. I wanted a lightweight but rigid tripod for backpacking; this fits the bill. It was the first decent tripod I purchased, and the sales price on B&H made it hard to pass up. My only concerns were with how it clamped to hold the center column and the legs. Both the clamps for the column and the flick lock clamps for the legs were almost entirely of plastic except for the tightening or adjustment screws, which appear to be stainless steel (a good thing). This brings into potential fruition two possibilities: 1) they might not be durable and 2) they might loosen under changing temperature or load. Notice that I used the words, possible and might; this is because I don't really know. I did not want to keep the tripod beyond the full refund date so I returned it after one indoor trial. That means I do not know how durable it is. But I know that plastic softer than metals and has high coefficients of thermal expansion, so it is subject to early wear and changing grip with changes in temperature. I opted, therefore, to return the tripod and try another brand that had more metal associated with its clamping features and offered the added bonus of being 0.65 pound lighter. I really liked the height of the Oben tripod without the column extended: high enough for me (I am 5'8 tall) to use with only slight bending. Why does this particular height matter? Because center columns typically introduce the most wobble (loss of stiffness), so on windy days it is wise to keep the column height to a minimum. On the other hand, I also liked the the Oben's fully extended height of 65.3. With a ball head or other camera mount added to the legs, that height gave margin to be able to place the tripod below me on the downhill side of a rise. Lots of travel tripods are shorter than this in their stowed configuration, but being able to get it into my checked luggage was all that mattered to me for travel length; one can fit a longer stowed length tripod on the outside of the daypack or backpack while hiking. More important is the stiffness in use, the extended height and low weight. The Oben CC-2361L is adequate in all three categories and better than most of its same weight. I am sure lots of people would be happy with this tripod. You might be one of them.
