Pentax 50mm f/1.8 overview

  • 1Description

The smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens from Pentax is a fast f/1.8 lens for cameras with a Pentax K mount. Mounted to a camera with an APS-C sensor, this lens gives an angle of view equivalent to a 76.5mm telephoto lens--ideal for portraits. The wide f/1.8 aperture makes this an essential lens for working in low light, and it also delivers beautiful bokeh (the out-of-focus portion of a photograph). This lightweight (4.3 oz) lens is very compact--just 1.5" (3.8 cm) long. The addition of Pentax Super Protect (SP) coating to the lens helps prevent dust, water, grease and other substances from attaching themselves to a lens and degrading image quality.

Very fast f/1.8 maximum aperture is ideal for low light situations and produces pleasing bokeh in the out-of-focus areas of a photograph
76.5mm telephoto equivalent in APS-C format
The lens is treated with the Pentax's original SP (Super Protect) coating, which repels dust, water, grease, and other substances that may adhere to the surface of the lens. The protective coating promotes trouble-free use in all kinds of shooting situations.

    Pentax 50mm f/1.8 reviews

smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 155.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent image quality and value I've only had this a week but the image quality is excellent, esp. when the price is considered. I've tested it with an artificial star and there is only, even wide open, only a slight trace of coma and virtually no astigmatism. No hint of field curvature or chromatic aberations. When used in my K50 the images are excellent wide open and only get better when stopped down to f/5.6. When used on my Q10, which is even more demanding due to the small pixel size, the images are still very, very good wide open. Much better than my older 50mm f/1.4 even when it is stopped down to f/2 and used with an APS-C format chip.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Helpful Lens To Foster Creative Shots Great for lower light situations and creating bokeh. At wider apertures (F1.8, F2.0) the subject can appear blurry, but I felt this was due to the nature of a shallow depth of field and not the lens itself. It may be prudent to set to manual focus to obtain peak sharpness. I took a few photos of garden flowers at F1.8 (with auto focus) and was pleased with the quality and end result. Please note, I only noticed the slight blurriness with the lowest F-stops. This lens is quite lightweight compared to the 18-135 zoom lens that is usually attached to my Pentax K30. My neck and shoulders will appreciate the lightened load.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A bit expensive, but great lens! I thought Pentax was really lacking a lens like this in their product line. The only Prime they had close to this was Pentax DA* 55mm f/1.4, which is amazing, but really expensive. Now this came to fill that gap. The images are really sharp, the autofocus is fast and accurate (Pentax K-r body) and the bokeh is very pleasant. Max sharpness is achieved around f/2, which is pretty good. There is almost no distortion and the images are beautiful. I think the DA* is even sharper, but I don't think it's worth the almost 3 times the price difference. If you want a nifty fifty like I did, I definitely recommend it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Plastic Fantastic It is noticably soft wide open, so don't buy it for the speed. It's decent when stopped down to f2.8; by f5.6 it's as sharp as anything. Auto focus is VERY loud but quick. The lens mount is plastic so I doubt it would stand up to heavy use. I honestly don't have a problem with the rest of the plastic. Structurally it seems sturdy enough, and plastic is probably more thermally stable than metal anyway. The mount though, should be a little tougher, in my opinion. This one was included with the K-3 by B&H, so I'm grateful to have it and it will see some use, but overall it isn't as good as other normal primes. I'd say it's worth having in the bag just because it weighs next to nothing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Phenomenal value and performance! This lens performs quite well wide open at f/1.8. Stopping down to 2.8 or more gives even sharper images and remains quite fast. Though the autofocus is loud, it is also fast and accurate on my K-50. Manual focus is fantastic on this because of the wide rotation range which I believe I read to be 190 degrees. The whole range is very smooth. The plastic construction is sturdy and seems durable. This and the older autofocus are what make it so affordable. This is an excellent value. I've done quite varied work so far with just this single lens and it has met every need like a champ.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lens is new but at moment I am not sure. I just purchased this lens and have only experimented with it twice but at moment I am not so happy. First pictures came out all blue. Second try produced less then very ordinary shots. However I think that I am too new to post anything negative and please allow me a bit more time to experiment some more. I only purchased this lens because I was led to understand that prime lenses produced sharper images but like I say I think I am too early to really post my results for your next customer. Hopefully this coming Thursday I will be able to get out and try again. Supposed to be a nice decent fall day in Chicago and anxious to use this lens.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from What a disaster... I bought this lens for my wife to use on her Pentax K-7. It does quite well at close range - minimum focus up to distances around 8 feet. However, from about 8 ft to 15 feet it just won't focus on the subject no matter what. I tried adjusting the fine focus in the camera body and it made no difference. I even tried to focus manually but to no avail. It didn't matter if the subject had high or low contrast. I tried multiple focus sensors on the camera as well as changing the camera orientation from horizontal to vertical and still no success. With or without flash it still won't return a sharp picture in that 8-15 ft range. I'm returning the lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great budget prime Bought this as the first prime lens for my new Pentax K-5 system. The first thing that struck me when I used it was how noisy the auto focus was. Guess years of Canon USM has spoiled me. After that auditory shock though, it was all uphill. The focusing is spot on on my K-5, and it is sharp from wide-open as far as I can tell. The Bokeh is nice too - much better than the Canon EF 50 F/1.8. But then that lens is half the price!I like the build and the design of the lens... solid plastic and compact. The plastic mount doesn't bother me... but yeah for $ + one could expect a metal mount. But we are paying for the Pentax clarity and contrast...both of which are there in loads. I think the bigger decision for potential buyers should be this against the trusty Pentax FA 50 F/1.4. You can get used copies of the same for the cost of a new 50 F/1.8. I decided for the new 1.8 because I believe that technology becomes better with time. Why buy old when one can buy new? ;) So far - haven't been disappointed.
