Rolls MX51S Overview

The Rolls MX51s Mini-Mix 2 Four-Channel RCA Mixer is a useful audio tool for any situation where multiple consumer-level products need to be summed to a single stereo output.

The MX51s features an XLR microphone input with switchable Phantom power. Its second channel offers both 1/8" stereo and RCA connectors for flexibility. The third and fourth channels have RCA connectors. Each channel features a level knob providing up to 32dB of gain; 26dB for line-level sources.

The MX51s has both 1/8" stereo and RCA output connections. The 1/8" output can also function as a headphone jack.

Handy Mixer with Some Unfortunate Issues

I have two of these which work pretty well form my purposes. Build quality is good as is the feature set. When bench testing I found some issues that could be important in some applications. 1. While the microphone input is in polarity with the outputs (assuming pin 2 hot), the line inputs show up at the line and headphone outputs with reversed polarity. 2. The level controls appear to be linear taper since most of the variation in volume control happens in the first third of rotation. This makes for sensitive adjustments. 3. I would prefer that the power input coaxial connector were center positive since most of my gear has center positive jacks. 4. It was easy to rig something to keep the power plug from pulling out, but it would be nice if it came with something to do that. 5. The headphone and RCA outputs seem to be in parallel so one should be conscious of load impedances. 6. Phantom power is about 12.8 volts. Some microphones may need more although it is enough for some so check before doing something critical.

Bought this to mix audio sources (CD etc.) with my Akai MPK mini play keyboard audio out. Works great. I enjoy playing along with music. Very quiet and no distortion. Covered the bright power LED with tape.

Will this drive headphones directly without external amplification?

The Rolls MX51s Mini-Mix 2 Four-Channel RCA Mixer is a line-level mixer for audio devices like CD players, media players, etc. It is not a headphone amplifier.
