Canon Close-up lenses are for quick and easy close-up photography. The close-up lens is screwed on to the front of a lens like a filter. Close-up lenses 250D and 500D have two achromatic elements to correct chromatic aberrations. They do not degrade the high optical performance of EF lenses. Close-up lens 500 has only one element, making it more affordable.

The 250D is suited for lenses with a focal length anywhere from 30 to 135mm. The 500D and 500 are geared for lenses with a focal length anywhere from 70 to 300mm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Make your moldy oldies more useful... I don't really believe in giving a product 5 stars unless it's perfect. Though expensive, I really couldn't imagine this accessory performing any better (within its designated limits, that is 70mm to 300mm lenses). It's optically transparent, extremely useful, and well coated (haven't had any problems with flare yet). I've been using this with a gaggle of classic manual focus Nikkors, and always with great results. These old timers perform well at infinity, but less so when focussed close (usually from coma flare)... but this diopter brings the infinity focus characterists down to about 1 foot in front of the lens, good stuff. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A useful alternative to a macro lens This lens (it screws on like a filter) allows one to halve (I think) the shortest focusing distance of any lens (on which it fits -- comes in different diameters). Works like a champ. I'd _rather_ have a dedicated macro lens, but for my use it allows me to turn my tele-zoom into a usable close-up lens without compromising any quality (judged by eye). It is also smaller and easier to carry than any macro lens, which I count as a plus. If you want to experiment with close-up photography (not too close -- it's not a true 1:1 macro), or only need to make a series of close-up shots, and you have a lens of the suggested length (see the specifications), this lens will ably meet your needs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent macro I love this close-up lens. I have used it on two Nikon autofocus lenses (18-55 VR and 55-200 VR) and the autofocus works very well. The photos are sharp. I mostly use this lens on a very old 55 mm Micro Nikkor lens, together with a 2x teleconverter and an extension tube, further improving the macro magnification of the 55. Sharp photos and minimal loss of light under all uses. I strongly recommend this to photographers who aren't ready to spend $$$ on a dedicated macro lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love it I love this close up lens. I have this one for my 50mm f/1.4 and another for my 18-200 and I cannot say enough wonderful things about either. The bokeh is wonderful and once you get used to the distance you can focus from and how it adjusts your f-stops you may stave off a true macro lens for quite some time. Despite others comments I found it quite easy to get used to. The only problem I have had with it so far is having to unscrew it when I want to take a regular shot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Get closer I attach this lens to the front of my Nikon 55-200mm lens to allow me to get closer to my subject. This lens is perfect for taking close-up photos without a macro lens. This is a high quality lens that comes in a heavy plastic case. It has a narrow range of focus but if you don't need the weight and cost of a macro lens, this is perfect to keep in your kit and attach to your lens when you want to take close-up photos.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Affordable close up option I use this on my Nikon 55-200 VR lens. It gives good quality photos with reasonable magnification. It even works on my 35-1.8 AFS lens, though the magnification produced is minimal. I like the fact that the close up lens can be easily fitted or removed as required. Caution: The depth of field reduces dramatically when this is fitted. In hindsight, I wish I had bought the version with 77 mm threads. While more expensive, the 77 mm would have been compatible with all my lenses when used with adapters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It is doing great job! I needed higher magnification than my Micro-Nikkor 105 f/2.8 D was providing but didn't want to compromise with the picture quality.I have seen very positive reviews for Canon 500D close-up lens and decide to give it a try. So far very good results: I got the additional magnification, and so far don't see any deterioration of the image quality. The dept of the field seems little bit more shallow (result of the increased magnification?), and MAY BE less color aberrations (very good if true!) but this should be more seriously analyzed. I still have not calculated how much magnification gain I got, from my first impression it looks like 20-30%.The only loss is that you CAN NOT focus on distant objects (more than 30-50 cm away), you need to remove the close up lens to regain this ability!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very powerfull for the size and price I only took few photos with this lens. But I took a picture of a spider of about 1 centimeter eating a mosquito. I cound see de eyes and the hairs of the spider too (a little out of focus, because I wasn't using a tripod neither a remote). I took some pictures of dragonflys and we can see the mouth of the insect, I cound see too the dust and dirty of the wall where the dragonfly was landed. I am with few time to take more pictures but it is very good macro lens. p.s I use mine with a nikon d40 and a 55-200 VR lens. Now I bought o remote controler too.
