The IR-STV IR Remote with Playback Control for Select Sony Cameras from Vello is a pocket-size infrared remote control that lets you take photos wirelessly with your camera from up to 15' away. When your camera is in remote triggering mode, the IR-STV trips the shutter by simply pressing the "S" button while aiming it at your camera. There's also a 2 second delayed shutter function that allows time for vibration to cease when your camera is tripod-mounted.

Vello IR-STV Overview

The IR-STV IR Remote with Playback Control for Select Sony Cameras from Vello is a pocket-size infrared remote control that lets you take photos wirelessly with your camera from up to 15' away. When your camera is in remote triggering mode, the IR-STV trips the shutter by simply pressing the "S" button while aiming it at your camera. There's also a 2 second delayed shutter function that allows time for vibration to cease when your camera is tripod-mounted.

The IR-STV not only has a Stop/Start video button for your camera, but allows full display control when your camera is jacked into a TV. You can enlarge or shrink a selected image as well as rotate it or delete it completely. Start a slide show of selected images and use your PictBridge-compliant printer to print an image remotely. There are even on-screen histogram and index displays. Please see Specifications for compatible cameras.

I have been using this remote for about 10 months and have found it to be useful, especially when my camera is mounted on a gymbal, because its difficult to access the cameras controls that way, but unless you are quite close and pretty much pointing towards the front of the camera, its quite inconsistent. But even the Sony one is pretty much the same, so if you wanted to shoot anything by controlling the camera from behind, its almost impossible. Not a good idea to have infrared for this type of operation and should really be a radio or wifi type to achieve more consistency.

I used it with my Sony Nex 7. It does work as a trigger release but a little sad that is it's only use (and record button on video), as described.

The Complete Guide to Sony's RX1RII says that unlike the A7 camera series, this camera doesn't allow use of an infared (IR) remote. Your web page lists this as an accessory for the RX1RII. Which is correct?

I'm not sure where you see that the infrared remote is listed as an accessory. The RX1RII is not compatible with the infrared remote.

It has not been tested on the Sony a7 III. However, it works with the other a7's so we feel that most likely will work fine. Remember it is only works from the front of the camera.
