Plustek 8200i Ai Reviews

Plustek 8200 Ai Scanned Images far Surpass the Slides

The Plustek 8200 Ai with the SilverFast software allows me to create digital images which surpass the original slides. I have scanned more than 1,000 slides dating back to 1951. Many of the slides were under or over exposed. The included SilverFast software is easy to learn and use and allows me to correct exposure, contrast, color, and to crop the images. I view the files on a 77 OLED TV, far superior to watching from a slide projector. In addition, the Plustek scanner is a good value.

Surprised me

Smooth as silk. The plustek 8200i is hardy and well made. Ease of use from my first scan. The maximum scan resolution @ 7200i gives 66 mega pixel files. Lasersoft software silverfast studio 9 is pretty intuitive with simple controls. The overall scan quality is far superior to the my current flatbeds and also to two Nikon coolscans which have since been retired. Several tone curves built into silverfast render authentic tonal properties (negafix). I was stunned by plus x pan and tri x negative to positive conversions. The scanner self calibrates in about two minutes with the provided IT 8 target. Other functions in the easy to find GUI are iSRD ( Equivalent of Digital ICE infra red automatic cleaning of dust and scratches) , AACO (adaptive contrast optimization), Saving files to PSD or RAW in addition to standard Jpegs Or TIFF (16 bit), Unsharp mask, Level and Curve adjustments, Auto exposure. On the whole, A very satisfying experience.

Mixed ideas for the 8200i Ai Film Scanner

I've just had this a week or so but I do like the quality of the scans I'm getting. I use a Mac mini M1 which leads me to my only complaint at this point. The quickScan and IntelliScan function don't work with Mac. WHYYYYY????? I would have given this device 5 stars but I have a principle that goes something like this. If someone builds hardware or software made for a computer to use it MUST work on all computers not just the have capable Microsoft versions. Lets get that fixed guys.

Clunky software but good device

Ordered a photo scanner and this negative scanner from B&H for saving some family photos. Comparing original photo vs photo scanner vs negative scanner shows an improvement in quality for each. Very happy with the outcome. Wish the sw was easier to load.

Much better scanner than the pacific image at the same price point. It makes much less noise and is less bulky. Also comes with a nice case/carrier for the scanner. Functionality and ease of use is just better, scans faster, looks great. Very happy I switched scanners.

Have just starting using the scanner, but first impressions are great. It was easy to set-up. The slides and negatives I've scanned so far look good on my computer. I have a lot of slides and negatives, and this scanner is just what I need to get the images onto my computer.

The scanner is great, the software, well.......

I've been an 'ardent amateur' photographer for the last 40 years, starting out with film cameras in the 1980s, and have multiple thousands of negatives and slides. Let me say don't let Silverfast 8 software be your only decision point to not buy this scanner! The scanner has performed flawlessly---I've been able to digitalize my old film negatives and slides with great, professional results. The Silverfast software is not always intuitive and it takes a little bit of work to conquer their learning curve, but once I became familiar with how it functions it was no more difficult than other software I've worked with and it produces excellent results. The other issue is that the scanner ( just as other scanners) can be a bit slow, depending on the settings you choose and the reproduction quality you're after. I look forward to passing many old images on to our daughter and her family as heirloom memories, so I'm willing to take the extra time to get the best quality possible. That said, images reproduced at lower dpi are still excellent. Yes, I would definitely buy this scanner again!

Nice Scanner, Odd Software

The scanner itself seems to work quite well and does a pretty good job of flattening color negatives but the SilverFast Studio software that comes with it has the most bizarre user interface I've ever seen (I'm a former software developer/UX designer). The software is also overly restrictive in that you have to buy another license to use another scanner (I also have an Epson V39 scanner for documents and other reflective items). I also own a copy of VueScan so I've been experimenting with both it and SilverFast. Some things seem to be better with SilverFast and some with VueScan so still haven't settled on one but it will probably be VueScan. The infrared scan works great for removing dust and scratches whichever software you use.

I am currently running and Epson V800 using SilverFast Ai 8.8 on an iMac. I’m interested in getting the Plustek 8200i Ai to handle my 35mm film scans using the supplied SilverFast software. My question is will I have any concerns when installing and using the software since I already have it installed on my Imac. My goal is to be able to easily run both scanners (not consecutively) from the same interface.
Asked by: Anonymous
Hardware wise there is no issue. Sometimes the software supplied with a device will work only with that hardware. Other than that I would not expect any issues.
