question
Do I need to condition and soft charge brand new powerex batteries or just soft charge them?
Soft charging the Powerex MH-C801D batteries is only needed for lower power batteries or if you are not in a hurry. As well, these batteries only need to be conditioned every 10-20 normal charge/discharge cycles.

Is this charger capable of charging Watson and Enloop Batteries?
Thank you,
Michael
While Watson batteries have not been specifically tested inside the Powerex MH-C801D 8-Cell Charger with 8 Pro Rechargeable AA NiMH Batteries (1.2V, 2700mAh), the manufacturer does state that the charger is suitable for all NiCd and NiMh batteries, including Maha Imedion or Sanyo Eneloop.

I was conditioning some old 2100mA Rayovac rechargeables and was shocked to see two of them charged to 3886 mA and still increasing. I immediately unplugged the unit and removed the batteries. One is bubbly looking like it's about to explode. Is my charger defective, or did I do something wrong?
As an owner of this same charger, I have not experienced what you have. My charger has never done that to any of my batteries. I STRONGLY suspect that those batteries that “overcharged” were merely defective. All batteries have a limited life expectancy. As a suggestion, I would try charging other batteries that you KNOW are good and see I they would charge normally or “ overcharge”. Make sure to place the “good” batteries in the exact same slots that the “defective” ones were charged in. I think that the fresh rechargeable batteries will charge just fine! Sincerely, I think that you just had two defective “old” batteries. I hope my answer helps. Have a nice day.
P.S.: I love my charger and have had it for 9 years!

question
Is this unit capable of charging Eneloop batteries as well as regular NiNH batteries?
As a user of batteries and their chargers I can say, yes, it will work. As an agent for B&H I have to say this use is unsupported and if the batteries or the charger is damaged, the warranty will not be in effect.
